Yak on way
Comments (47)
Yak has been left out of Boro's squad to face Fullham. With Mido now in Boro are willing to sell. Boro want a couple of proven players especialy in midfield and at the back to cover fot Huths injury, and the £4 million they make from buying Mido and selling Yak deals will go to fund this.
Sky Sports has it that Yak is out of their squad for Saterdays game.

Whilst I’m excited about signing Yakobu,I do have reservations.Harry Redknapp said he would not go to £11M for him because he misses a third of every season playing for Niogeria. With Yobo and Anichebe also likely to be absent for large chunks,I’m not sure he’s as good a buy as he may appear. It’s no good Moyes moaning when they all jet off.

It will only be every 2 seasons, they’re looking at changing when the African Nations Cup takes place so hopefully it won’t affect is to much.

One of the lads I have a bevvy with in Wokingham is a West Ham fan.He rang me earlier. And he reckons West Ham have tabled a bid for Yakubu. So,we’ll have to wait and see.

Yakubu to Everton for £10-11 ?, alot of money to pay for a player who doesnt always "put it all in" however at his best he has an excellent goalscoring record for average clubs. The bonus also is that he is still only 24 and should improve, additionally he will not know what has hit him if he joins us, because of our work ethic it will be demanded that he gives 100% and will be as fit as as a butchers dog. I am sure that Joey will keep him on his toes and tell him of what is required, for sure if he doesnt "Put it all in" as required then the fans will let him know, but alternately he could be unstoppable once initiated, exciting possibilities could await

Remember how stupid the market is atm though, for ever plays value, add around 5 mil and that’s their asking price.
Sure they may not be worth how much we’re paying, but 8 mil would probually buy you a championship stiker now (eg Nugent)

According to Gareth Southgate he IS in the ’boro squad this weekend. Also, if Anelka is available for the same money...hmmmmmm
Great to have these kinds of options tho!

Yakubu is a quality striker from what I have seen of him.The price we are paying if its true we are signing him is the going rate these days. The RS have just sponked 30 big ones on that skinny Spanish kid who looks as though he couldnt put a ciggie out>so Yakubus price aint so big.As for him being 24 I dont know about that.Remember Bhacyhayoko>he was supposed to be 24 and it turned out he was 78.

Lest us not forget Amokachi as well Tony - probably still only 22 !!! Maybe this is what Everton mean by the second part of a medical - they ensure the player is the age they say they are - do they do that like trees and count the rings....
I think he could prove to be a great player for us. Although, I read somewhere he was awful on Wednesday, which was an understatement from what I watched - clearly the lad’s mind was elsewhere.

Yak is only good at penaltys. We do not want him at the Toffees!!!!
He is like a baby elepahant when it comes to a first touch. Quiet, did some say baby elephant. They are correct sir!

Why do we always try and buy Boro rejects?? Nick Barmby, Paul Gascoigne and now Yakubu ????
What is it between Merseyside and Teeside???
We haven’t had European success for 20 plus years - yet we are buying players from a club who are not a giant in Europe despite being the only club in England to get to a European final (MIDDLESBROUGH that is) outside of the top four this Century.

Nice to see there are a few of you guys here who have the same reservations I do about this. I just don’t rate him at 11M. It appears as though even his most staunch supporters on Boro fansites admit he has a tendency to go missing during a match - a lot. That, and with Pienaar, Joey, and probably Victor, we’ll see four of our first team disappear back to the AN Cup right when we should be stepping on the gas. Perhaps not the best bit of business? Hope I’m proven wrong if it indeed goes through...

I agree Stig. I’m not a big fan of Yak and I know we could hold out for better if we didn’t have a injury crisis up front. AJ goes down and we would be for it. Vic is doing fine learning the trade but still lacks that striker savvy. Faddy still down and Vaughan I wish could bounce back and have a injury free season here on out. We still need a least one more experienced hitman that isn’t over the hill or overweight. Is Yak the one? I’m still not so sure.

To be honest as long as he scores 15 goals a season, it doesn’t really matter how good he is at football. Plus the fact that he’s still only 24 (allegedly) gives Moyes a lot of time to turn him into a top quality striker.
I have to bring up Anelka again though. Johnson and Anelka up front would scare the living shit out of defences.

One thing ye are forgetting lads is that Moyes is great at moulding players into playing with the values he believes in - hard graft, effort for the entire game and playing for the other lads on the pitch. Remember Arteta when he came a few years ago??
I know Yak has been here for a few seasons but I think he’ll get a wake up call from Moyes. Yobo being here will help him settle fast, and imagine how good he’ll be if Moyes gets his overall effort over the 90mins up to a respectable level? The same criticism was levelled at Fernandes and he improved too and will continue to do so.
Lastly, I think we’re finally shaking off the tag as a team who buys other teams’ rejects; on the contrary, I believe we’re buying the best players from certain teams, e.g. Jagielka and Baines. Obviously they were with weaker teams, but still! And Yakubu is Boro’s prized asset so that shows our intent too.
I don’t know whether Moyes had 20 million in his chequebook the whole summer or what but regardless of how they got it for him or when it was made available, the signing of Fernandes - a player who I thought would end up with one of the so -called top 4, really shows that we mean business. I thought it was typical when we said we couldn’t afford him, I thought ’here we go again, he’s almost too good for us, it was too much to hope for’.
But there ya go. This really has turned into a gr8 transfer window and after the results we’ve gotten with the same group from last year, things can only get better! We’re gonna crack that top 4 sh1t wide open!! COYB!!!

I still have doubts over Yakubu. I watched him play against Wigan and he looked totally uninterested until he was taken off after an hour.
Yakubu does have a knack for the finding the net but he is a player who seems to need three chances to score one goal.
Its alot of money especially especially if Yakubu cannot fit into Everton’s hard working side.
Still in Moyes I trust.

Yakubu is a class player and he has realized just how shit Boro are,he was probably pissed off that they didnt keep Viduka! Im sure Joey Yobo will have filled him in on whats required to be a success at Everton! Work your bollocks off and dont get on Moyes’s tits (that and 20 goals Yak)

I don’t understand this talk that it takes him a few chances to score a goal. What striker has a 100% conversion rate? Has nobody watched Drogba or Rooney? They get their fair share of goals, but they have a lot saved and go wide of the posts as well, but I would still take Drogba in a heart beat (not that other fella though). Yakubu would be a very good addition to our team, theres just no question about it and I don’t think Yobo would want him if he didn’t think he would fit in with Moyes’ style. There has been a little talk about that Brazilian Wagner Love being followed by a couple of English teams lately though. I watched him in every game of the Copa America and he is one skillful player. Now if it was between him and Yakubu, I would go with him. He’s a strong, fast guy who could deal with the physicality of the English game, but that’s just rumour.

I also hold deep reservations about Yakubu. For a number of reasons.
- I seriously doubt he is 24 more nearer to 30 me thinks.
- Even if he was 24, looking at his size (which is quiet frankly bulky to say the least) what is he going to look like when he’s nearing 30- A M1 Sherman tank?
-his goal scoring record, in recent years, has been massaged by penalties- albeit he does hot double figures.
-His all round play leaves alot to be desired.
-the possibilty that James Beattie MkII is just around the corner, so soon after the first ordeal.
No doubt he can stick the ball into the back of the net. But is he really worth £11 million? we’re not desperate for a striker, and I am sure this money could be better spent on someone else (Defoe, Vagner Love, Fred..)
If we do sign him, i hope he makes me eat my words but going by past experience I am just struggling to reach the same level of excitment others have.

Ya just know West Ham will be sniffing round, they are defo the new Newcastle! But on a positive players like Jags, Baines, Manny (bless him) seem to wanna join us so hopefully ’The Yak’ (with a bit of a gentle push from his bessy Yobo) will be the same!

Your missing the point, Yakubu needs three chances to score one goal which would be fine if Everton could create three chances per game.
Unfortunately Everton struggle to create goal scoring chances (thats why AJ hasn’t got near the 20 mark yet).
At a club like Everton where he may only get one chance per game you have to wonder how effective he will be?

First of all, Brian Noble, I wouldn’t worry too much about what Appy Arry (Lion from the Wizard of Oz look-a-like) Redknap says about Yakubu. Yobo is Nigerian and he was one of the few players to play every minute of every match last season. Plus if he was so worried about African players missing games for him then why did he sign Kanu, Benjani, Utaka or Sully Muntari (the later two both at £8m each!) Personally I think he would take the big man back in a heart beat.
I do however share the concerns of many Evertonians who feel he lacks a bit in the work rate department. Remember the reservations we had about Beattie? It’s hard to be enthusiastic about a player when you have been burned so recently. Beats could fairly bang in the penos too don’t forget. However Yakubu seems to have a better and more consistent record of goal scoring. £11m is a lot of cash to spend and it is not a move that should be taken lightly. I’m sure he has been well sussed out.
It seems like exciting times ahead. 3 points tomorrow please!

Dutch, the way we’ve started the season I tend to disagree. AJ had 3 good chances 2nd half against ’title contenders’ Spurs and thats consdiering our Victor was tiring. Don’t forget were not looking for a main lone striker now, but someone who could work along side AJ
David Barks
Posted 17/08/2007 at 22:51:55
No Dutch, you’re missing the point. No striker has a 100% conversion rate, even the best in the world miss their fair share. Also, we do create our fair share of goal scoring opportunities, in case you missed it we have scored 5 in two games, and could have had more than that. AJ hasn’t gotten near the 20 goal mark yet because he was injured last season requiring surgery during the summer, and HE’S ONLY BEEN HERE FOR ONE YEAR. If it’s so hard for him to get a goal Boro must be just tearing apart opposing defenses and creating opportunities every other second, because he seems to be getting goals there, and at Pompey.

Tony Marsh, are you as sure about Yakubu being a legend as you were about Lescott being the new Krøldrup?
Seriously though Tony, I really hope you're right on this one. I just have a nagging feeling that having just got rid of one lazy, overweight, transfer record breaking striker (Beattie) we about too sign another one.
Yakubu a legend, please be right on this one Tony.

Tony, good call on Parker. Thunderbird puppet is right on the money. He’s injured more often than not and the fact that he turned us down for newcastle only to join yo-yo club west ham speaks volumes for the lad.
Lets hope Fernandes and Yakubu are signed and sealed by Monday.
As for all this only scoring 1 of every 3 chances debate. Don’t worry about it. We’ve been getting plenty from midfield and with Mikey and hopefully Manny providing the ammo the boys up front will be bangin them in.

Dutch expecting a Nigerian to settle in a place like God foresaken Middlesboro with the freezing cold weather and empty stadium to contend with along with the pie and chips culture culture is to much to ask. When I first watched Yakubu years ago I noticed he was one of the few strikers at the time and still is that can pick a ball up deep run at defences and get shots off at goal.Something we have lacked since Rooney left.If you trust Moyes as much as you say then trust him on this one.Fuck me I am starting to get the old buzz back.Fernandez,Yakubu,Pienaar,
Baines. It aint looking that bad at the Moment is it?.

A lot of nonesense has been written above. You bring strikers in to score goals - Yakubu, whether he?s 24 or 30, if he?s fit or overweight, if he takes loads of pens or not, scores goals. He has done that better than anyone else in the prem for the past four years, bar Henry. End of.
and for those who question his attitude, then start talking about Le Sulk?? Come on people, get real.

As much as Im well pleased we may be getting the Yak, I read the below in the Telegraph and I was always under the impression he had scored more than that. Thats a strike rate of 1 in 3 which aint mind blowing. He will get better service with us thats for sure but I expected he had scored more than that???
