The Mail Bag
Two points

First, the match yesterday. 3 points there for the taking and we came away with nothing. Having watched the highlights, we were unlucky not to come away with a draw but we really should've played them off the park. I don't accept this philosophy of "lets forget it; win some, lose some" (nothing personal, Dutch) ? if we're looking to improve on 6th place in the Premier League then games like these are games we should be winning.
Secondly, some people have questioned the money we will hopefully be spending on Fernandes and Yakubu. I agree it's a lot of cash but in the current market I think it's good value. Consider this: if Koumas goes for £5.3M and Richardson goes for £5.5M (I still chuckle!), then a 21-year-old Fernandes is definitely worth £8-9M in my opinion.
As for Yakubu, while I'm not 100% convinced he's the striker to bring us to the next level, in terms of Premier League goals in the past 3 seasons, he's second only to Henry. Ok so that may have something to do with the transfer merry-go-round and not too many top strikers hanging around for 3 seasons in a row, but it's still an impressive statistic. He's 24, has a proven scoring record and has the talent and skill to score a goal out of nothing.
He's considered to be lazy ? my view is that he is definitely lazy at Boro, but he wasn't lazy under Harry Redknapp at Pompey so maybe Moyes can bring out the best in him. Anyway, Anichebe showed yesterday that, although he will hopefully be one for the future, we BADLY need another striker while Vaughan is out. Hopefully we get Yakubu and Manny in before next Saturday.
