David Nugent

The reason given why we did not sign Nugent was that Moyes felt he was out of his depth and unproven for £6M pounds. In the Daily Mirror today I read Nugent has been dropped by 'Arry Redknapp as he is out of his depth. Derby are willing to sign him already. How bizarre!!!! This does vindicate Moyes's decision not to sign Nugent, we have already had Brett Angell and Bernie the bolt Wright, Mikael Madar, Mo Johnson, James Beattie and many others who I can't remember who have not justified the Everton No 9 shirt. Also, remember Forsell, who failed a medical... what has he done since?

Yeah its a bit soon for Redknapp to be selling him I think, however he must look pretty poor in both matches and training if he is even considering getting rid!

I think its just speculation lads. Give him time, I am sure he will come good.

Peter Eastoe was our top scorer in 1980/81 with 19 goals in a very average team, Tony Marsh. Would probably fetch about £12 million these days with a record like that. He was also a good foil for the emerging Graeme Sharp the following season.
Tony Marsh: Guilty again of an OTT comment :)
PS... Biley scored in his first 2 games and then was rubbish so I’ll give you that one. How about adding Warren Aspinall and Rod Belfitt to he list, or for younger fans, ’Jigsaw’ ( goes to pieces in the box ) Barlow was a trier, but never quite up to it!

Mikael Madar hahaha oh the memories! :)

Rod Belfitt of course how could i forget him. I remember Eastoe had one good season here. As for Jim Pearson he kept Duncan McKenzie out of the team. How times have changed what would Duncan be worth now. He can be seen matchdays in the corner of the Park End stand in the hospitality box under the Sky commentary Box throwing leftover biscuits to the crowd, which goes to show you how wages have gone up. My dad said he used to wait on County Road for the players to get off the bus to walk to the ground and the kids used to wait for the players to throw their ciggie butts to the ground and have a drag on them to brag to their mates. Ahh were would we be without nostalgia

Bachayoko was pooh as well as being 93 when we signed him and what about Mikey Walsh.I reckon Jeffers deserves to go on this list as well and.

And you’ve all forgotten Rod Belfitt who we swopped for David Johnson ( a far better finisher than his current namesake!).Belfitt managed 3 goals in 17 games before being shipped off to Sunderland.Perhaps they’ll go for Nugent!

BackoftheEcho, what a player, he used to pray to Mecca at the beginning of the match, I think it was the bingo hall on Walton Road though he was facing. Maybe they should of repostioned the goal to the East and he would of scored more. Mick Walsh another crap signing, Micky Thomas though not a striker another one, how is he a Utd legend.

I remember Eamon O’Keefe and a certain Kevin Ratcliffe being two of the worst full-backs we ever had. However, Ratters’ move to centre half was the making of him and the rest is history, etc. O’Keefe on the other hand remained shite till we finally off-loaded him!

I never wanted Nugent in the first place. You need something to your game to actually make it as a forward in the premiership. What did he have? He isnt quick, strong or good in the air. People talk about him being skillful because of his goal a Palace last season but do you really think he could do that in the premiership. I dont.
Why do you think Roy Keane dropped the bid. I think because he realised he needed a goalscorer and not someone who can only score 17 goals in the championship. Both Earnshaw and Chopra scored more than that aswell as Johnson and Marlon King the years before.
Im glad we didnt go In for him because I knew deep down Vaughan is a better player as did a lot of people. Yes he is a scouser but so am I. Would I bang in 20 goals a season. No I wouldnt and either would he.

Peter Eastoe?? How very dare you!
He and Olly kicked the shite out the cup and will forever be immune to any slagging from me!
And Jim Pearson would have enjoyed similar fame if it hadnt been for that f#ckin Welsh cant!
Seriously, Eastoe was a fine player during a lean spell with us.
Now that Joe Harper....

Is Yakubu really worth the money
Season 2006/2007 36 apps and 12 goals
Season 2005/2006 29 apps and 13 goals
Season 2004/2005 29 apps and 12 goals
Prolific? Value for money? He’s 27 and was only bought for £7.5 million in 2005. Hmmmmm

I’d say £11m is a touch inflated but was probably the going rate for such a record at the moment Chris.
Also, all reports and indicators are that the boy is 24 (although he seems to have been around for donkeys years, so he could have one of those Daniel Amokachi passports!! He was 23 for about 11 years).
We have achieved some considerable strides in the last four-five years and more importantly have far more soldity and stability both on the pitch and at boardroom level. If we could add to that with a strikeforce that scored 27-30+ goals between them a season, and a midfield that oozed ability I genuinely think we could begin to bridge that gap firstly back to realistic contenders with Tottenham for 5th, but before long put some pressure on 4th as well.

I guess in a world where Darren Bent goes for ridiculous millions the rest of the clubs think they can do the same.
Football is fooking wrotten to the core.....

In years gone by there have been so many cases of strikers being prolific in Division 1 or the Championship as its now called but Nugent wasnt really even prolific was he?. The big reason he was touted for Everton was because he is an Evertonian and if he hadnt been then I doubt he would ever really have been mentioned in the first place..I wish him well at Pompey but the jury is still well out..

Yakubu is in the same league as AJ-he’ll get you a dozen goals a season and no more.£20M for a strike force like that is a bloody joke!

The state of the market for strikers is bonkers. Given Johnson and Bent are similar players with similar records, the fact that one went for twice the price of the other only 12 months later suggests that football is currently suffering from Zimbabwean levels of inflation.
Paying £12.5m for Yakubu seems bonkers to me. But then I can’t think of a better player who is seasoned in the Premiership that we’d get for less.
The stories about Nugent’s sale could well be bollards but, if they are true, they certinaly justify Moyes’ decision not to sign him. Possibly a leason learnt from the Beattie fiasco?
It all goes to show that footballers are really only ’worth’ what someone will pay for them. And while West Ham, Spurs, Man City and Aston Villa are ready to throw their owners’ billions at anyone with a French or Brazillin name and a pulse all the rest of us will continue to have to pay world class prices for less than world class players.

Please don’t get me wrong, I don’t consider him to have been a success at Everton, but Mickael Madar was not a complete failure. It’s arguable the handful of goals he did score kept us in the division in 1997/98 (6 goals in 15 appearances and we survived on goal difference only!), thus amply returning our investment of £1 plus wages for his signature.
Cometh the hour, cometh the man eh! LOL
The thing I best remember him for was his starring moment on Baddiel and Skinner’s Fantasy Football. QA clip of him shouting abuse at a female referee’s assistant.
"Feckoff! You are a woman!"

My brother-in-law lives in Redcar and follows Borough. He says Yak is a Heskey clone but less mobile.Effective in about one game in four.Seriously rates Beattie as a better player.Reckons he’s all ours for £11.5M but big arguements about payment schedule.
Moyes strikes again!

Madar was never that bad a player its just that the biggest thing we all remember him for is THAT derby match miss at the Kop end..His goals record was decent and technically he was as good as alot of strikers we have seen here..Apparently his attitude came under scrutinty when Walter Smith came here as manager and froze him out..That was the last we saw of him..Just a little thought on the amount of goals strikers are expected to score in the Premiership..If AJ scored 12 times last season and we still finished 6th where may we have finished if we had a stiker next to him that also got 12 or 13 goals?. The best any other striker mustered was Vaughan with...FOUR!! not Vaughans fault through injury I grant you that but once again Vaughan is injured AGAIN..So thats why we need a striker partner for AJ.. Gone are the days when strikers scored 25 goals anyway..Henry only got 10 last season and the few who do score 20 plus will cost you 20 plus million pounds..

Whenever someone comes up with a striker who was crap someone tries to top that with a new name. Well, I got one who won’t be bettered and will end the whole discussion.....IMRE VARADI.
The most deadly striker from one yard out ever to play for Everton.
I dare anyone to top that one !!!

Well the worst striker of all has to be Bernie Wright, surely?
Followed by Rod Belfitt or Fanny Cadimarteri?
and Martin Keown who played one match up front for us against Woking in the Cup!

All this talk of crap strikers and I saw two of them on the same day a couple of weeks a go. I was taking the cat to the vets and who should be in front of me getting his dog some heart medication but Brett Angel. I was gonna get his autograph but was worried he might miss the paper with the pen and stab the cat. Then later that day I saw Stuart Barlow, old Jigsaw himself.

Hi guys, Pompey fan here.
The talk of Nugent leavin is rubbish. Billy Davies has said so himself. Moyes did say he wanted him, but not for the money Preston were asking. Fair play. There are many players teams want, but not for the money the other team want for them. Once you valuate a player to go over that would mean paying over the odds in your opinion. But he did say he would’ve taken him at the right price, so he must’ve seen something there. Personally I think Nugent will get there, much like AJ did for you guys and Ashton did for West Ham. Difference is AJ and Ashton had a season in this league under their belts already, Nugent has 2 and a bit games so far. He’ll come good. No one knew who the Yak was until Harry unleashed him and now look how much he’s going for! Yak would be a good buy for you guys, him AND AJ up front..... frighten a few defences there I reckon!
Good luck for the season.

You chumps! I hope you look back at these messages in a few years and see how wrong you are about Nugent - he will be one of the best British strikers of the decade.
The story in the Mirror is complete B/S - see Google News. However even if it was it doesn’t claim he’s beyond his depth, but that Derby are already willing to pay at least £6m for the player, because they’re so desperate to land a player of his calibre.
Mark my words ;-).
