New Signing - but not what we were hoping!

Comments (53)

German goalkeeper Stefan Wessels!! Yep - not what I was expecting either. I'm all in favour of strengthening the squad but this was probably the last place in the team we were worried about. We've got him on a free apparently so probably not a bad signing - and lets hope it's the start of a bit more activity over the next 10 days

I clicked on Wilkpedia to see who he is and low and behold they already say he plays for us. Now whoever updates Wilkpedia has got to be good. Here is the link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stefan_Wessels He seems to have spent as much time on the bench as tricky Dicky did being Oliver Kahns understudy. However with both backup keepers still very young probably a good move. Talking of goalies did you hear Jamie Redknapp say on Sunday 'Peter Schmeichel will be a father like figure to Casper' Now he gets paid to make comments that astute.

Well I didn't see that one coming. I remember seeing a link to him a few weeks ago, but I tip my hat to Moyes for that as I believe he will prove to be a very shrewd signing. I know that I wasn't alone in thinking that an injury to Howard could leave us right in the brown stuff. Good to have some competition there for the young lads too and his experience will surely be of benefit to the team. Nice one Davy. Now, give us some good news about Manny and a quality striker and I'll never doubt you again - well not for a few days anyway! ;-) COYB

I dont think he'll get a lot of games unless Howard gets injured which hopefully wont happen, but he cant be worse cover than Richard Wright! He's supposed to be a decent keeper though and on a free transfer looks like decent business.

He’s a goalie!!!!

Do you reckon he can play up front as well?

7   Posted 21/08/2007 at 18:10:48

Maybe that is Moyes best signing of the summer.

Didn’t need another keeper ?

OK so Tim Howard picks up a knock and misses half a dozen games do we really want to throw John Ruddy into the Premier.

I don’t !!!!!

Turner flew home from USA hurt , is still hurt and as the ’Scottish Richard Wright’ does any Blue ever want to see him in our goal again ?

Surely Turner is done and will go out on loan and follow that with a january transfer.

He is a nice lad but as a first team keeper for Everton.........don’t even think about that !

It may not be the signing you were wanting, and the GK position may be the least important prsently for strengthening, but this signing doesn’t mean its a replacement for Manny and Yak and if Moyes beleives he needs another Keeper so be it... I knew we’d get these reactionary negative posts as soon as the signing came to light.

Tell you what would be nice.A statement from the club giving us the run down on the fernandez saga. Then again this is Everton we are talking about here.

Might have bought him for cover for when we play Man Utd.

Soz boys. Couldn’t resist that one.

Since Wikipedia was so fast on Wessels, I thought I would check on Yakubu. Nope, no foretelling him at Everton yet. Too bad.

Would not be surprised to see new signing(s) unveiled at the same Press Conference on Friday that tells us that we have ’given the Club a clear mandate to move to a fantastic new stadium in Kirkby’. Call me cynical if you like, but I also expect to see Bill Kenwright’s sudden re-appearance at that Conference with smiles and back-slapping all round. They’ll probably have fireworks and champagne too! :)

Good signing I reckon, experienced keeper and bound to know the ropes being Oliver Kahn’s understudy.

James re Wikipedia - its user added information, you can add anything you like to Wikipedia and when I say ’you’ I mean YOU.

Its checked for new content on a daily basis and edited in case any information is utter bollocks.

"Last place in the team we were worried about" - I don’t agree at all.

Iain Turner may have performed well for Sheffield Wednesday on loan but in the first team matches/friendlies i’ve seen him involved in for us, he hasn’t done anything to suggest he’s ready to be number 2.

With Wessels in we can hopefully allow Turner to go on loan for the whole season to a Championship side. He certainly needs the experience.

Steve, I once heckled Mick Jones from the front row of a gig for his new band, who incidentally are utter shit - he got very upset, looked me in the eye and said, ’yeah awright mate keep in darn will ya’ The crowd all went, ’oooooooh’ Oh how we laughed!

Bowie once recommended my Nan to Bobby Robson shortly before the ’99 World Cup but she was turned down flat for having bigger tits than Gazza.

She’d light up the Champions League, she’s very experienced; not much of a mover but then look at Edward Sheringham!

19   Posted 21/08/2007 at 19:14:17

Karl, I completely agree with you.

Looking plainly at what fans have been saying about being disgruntled at not being told about the progress of either transfers, it seems an obvious solution for the club to unveil them on the same day- to shock and surprise us I believe..a very unsubtle attempt at making us believe they are our Gods on Earth! :)

But without the cynicism, I do believe it would be a good approach by the club- reclaiming some media attention from the fanfare that is going on at White Hart Lane.

Good move from moyes, I dont think Turner is quite ready at the minute.

I was worrying about the position so all I need to worry about now is manny and getting a striker. Get those sorted and we are ready.

Don't tell me.... As part of their Kirkby preparation Bill and Bully went to look at FC Cologne's stadium, Bill looked over at a disconsolate individual sat alone ignored by his team mates, pointed and said "He could be Joseph!". Davey unaware that his chairman was taking part in a BBC reality TV show thought he was referring to Joe Corrigan and snapped him up as soon as.

Still I bet he tracks back well and doesn't have any of those nonsense ideas about going forward. That and it still gives the impression that maybe the club will spend some money before the vote deadline.

What have we signed a South African Australian batsman for ????

Oh, I get it - Stefan Wessels is an anagram in German for Gunther Netze.

He’s absolute class, and is only 58, so a 5 year contract is in order to stave off the big boys next year.

Speaking of Rock Stars earlier, I shared a hotel with madman Pete Way (my hero) of UFO and Waysted fame 2 years ago, along with the Damned, Aussie Floyd, Frank Marino, Thunder and others.

I spoke to Pete in the lobby and posed with him for a photo, but the wife had left the camera in the room so I accidentally torched her Robbie Williams CD’s when I got home.

It was at a Rock and Blues festival in Derby, but Moysie and the boys didn’t turn up !!!!

25   Posted 21/08/2007 at 21:30:04

How can any of you say this German keeper is going to be any better than Turner. We got him on a free FFS and he chose to be an understudy with little prospect of a game unless Howard gets injured rather than A) stay as 1st choice for Cologne or B) join another german club (as 1st choice keeper). I think its unfair to judge Turner on his mistakes at Man Utd.

Come on Moyes tie up deals for Manny and the Yak and have them eligble for the weekend.

I note also that AJ has a swollen knee and has pulled out of the england game. Dont fancy playing with Vic as our 1st choice striker.

Tony, do you want Everton to disclose every episode of the negotiations regardless to how this affects our chances of signing him?

You certainly don’t. I would be happy to see the details but we both know that signing players, especially those who are partly owned by companies with "Media" in their name is dodgy business at best.

By the way, if anyone thinks that two fit keepers are enough should be shown the replay of last year’s Chelsea game against Reading.

I wonder how long Riqueleme’s page will remian trashed like that?

This fella has been on loan a while now hasn’t he? Moyes must think he’s worth signing or he wouldn’t have done so. He must have some good training tips to pass on to the other boys, from working with Kahn. That kind of stuff is invaluable to young lads.

From riqueleme’s wiki page, before it is deleted:

Everton

ON August 21st 2007, Juan Roman Riqueleme joined English Premier League side Everton FC for a fee reported to be around £7 million and a packet of crisps, Alan’s Nan moved the other way as part of the deal. It is reported that Riquelme is a big fan of the Shandy Andy and can’t wait to join him for a few sesssions down his local.

Taken from the Warren Buffett page on Wikipedia (READ THE LAST BIT, then you’ll understand this)... "Despite his immense wealth, Buffett is renowned for his unpretentious and frugal lifestyle. When he spent $9.7 million of Berkshire’s funds on a corporate jet in 1989, he jokingly named it "The Indefensible" because of his past criticisms of such purchases by other CEOs."

Makes you really hope he buys Everton then. You think the lack of striker purchases is bad now??
