Where/What is Everton?

In Washington, a town just West of Sunderland, a Mackem today asked me 'I guess you support Liverpool, then?' to which I responded 'No, I'm a blue', 'Oh' he replied 'Man City eh, top of the table and nine points for you then!'. This reminded me of an ex-girlfriend from Leeds who couldn't understand why I didn't support my 'local team' which she perceived to be Liverpool. She thought Everton was a London team like Arsenal or Chelsea as other cities don't usually have two teams and if they do they usually have the name of the city rather than a suburb. (I'd love to say she didn't last long but she did... shame on me!)
I guess this makes us quite unique, and although I'm an advocate of the 'yes' vote, and have vocally stated my belief that Kirkby is pretty much Liverpool, this little bit of poignancy made me stop and think a bit. Food for thought...

Reminds me of the Middlesbrough steward at the away end at the last game of the 05/06 season. "Where are you boys from then?" he asked.
Kirkby will hardly help the profile but it seems our "brand name" isn’t that good as it stands!

Let’s be honest if you do not know Everton are from the city of Liverpool you are not exactly a football supporter.
It would be similar to someone saying Chelsea? Arsenal? Spurs? etc.
Where ya from lads? Oh London didn’t realise that.

Years ago when I went to Stamford Bridge a Chelsea fan asked me if Everton are one side of the river and Liverpool the other

As a Sunderland fan, can i apologise for my fellow Mackem who i’m sure must live with all of his brothers and sisters, and aunties and uncles in the same house, in an area of Washington that resembles these American horror films where the kids take a wrong turn into the forest! I’d be staggered if most Sunderland fans didn’t realise that Everton are historically, a far bigger club than Liverpool (who were nothing more than an above sized club who came to life in the middle sixties).

Why don’t we change the club name to "Liverpool Everton Football Club" when we move.. or "Everton Liverpool FC". If we’re going to raise our heritage to the ground, we may aswell do it big style; but at least leave a clue for ignoramuses to where we were born!

Fuck Liverpool. What has ’The City’ever done for Everton?I’m proud they sent me ma and Da to Kirkby.
Sorry to say that too many of my fellow Evertonians have turned out to be Toffeenoses!

Nobody knew where Everton was when I was a kid, even though we were winning championships and cups. Nothing ever changes
I grew up in the midlands

Sid Foreman is right. This stadium debate has shown up too many Evertonians as total snobs who look down on us Kirkbyites as the pits.Maybe the club would have got more support if they’d planned to build the ground behind Tesco on the Formby by-pass!

If it helps, I just claimed that Everton was in the north east. Brian Noble gleefully pointed out my error.

Eh, Sid, Just to clarify like...
I’m not a "toffeenose", I’m not against Kirkby as such. As a Sintellenser I always considered Kirkby as Liverpool and still do.
I have no other objection than simple nostalgia for Goodison Park.
I’m probably a Luddite, but I’d stay at Goodison if there was any chance at all!
