The Mail Bag

Hope for the best, expect the worst...

One thing I've noticed whilst watching Spurs grappling with another potentially disapointing season is this: Apparently both the fans (understandably as they are loyal fans after all) and the Spurs Board EXPECT their team to beat Everton.

Does this not say something about how we are percieved by (according to Sky) the fifth biggest club in the country (I will admit they are probably 3rd or 4th richest)? Does this not say that, despite our relative recent 'success', we are still just another also-ran?

Also, having watched Man City emerge from their grave (thanks to a crook and a manager who is a useless coach but just has a happy knack of putting as many quality players in his teams who can pass and move as he can) it makes me even more depressed at what we have to put up with despite whether we win or not.

If Fernandes and Yakubu join us this week, Moyes will once again have spent quite a bit but I bet Fernandes will spend more time warming the bench along with Baines and Jagielka than on the pitch... and we will still be (apart from Arteta) shocking to watch.

Will people stop putting this SHITE on here, what the fuck do you even mean by ’also-rans’?? And the Eriksson not being a good coach just fucking stinks of someone who reads the papers & knows nothing about football? Apart from shagging everything he could, he was a decent England coach & his club record is fantastic. But SO WHAT!! This is an Everton site & your post is fucking NONSENSE, if you dont enjoy watchig us.....then DONT!!

Eriksson is a quality coach as shown by the massive improvement at City - people might criticise his England record but I’d take him of that uselss smug twat McClaren.
Eriksson was arguably our most successful coach since Ramsey - did any others reach three consecutive qtr finals at three consecutive tournaments?

He wasn’t anywhere near as bad as people made out while in charge of England. The problem was people’s expectations. We thought we were as good as the top sides, but in fact, we were and still are, not even close!

I do wonder whether Scolari would be able to take us further but that would be down to him being incredibly good, rather than Sven being crap!

Why would we spend £8m on a talented player only to have him warm the bench?! Dont talk rubbish!!! Jagielka and Pienaar are being given time to settle in before becoming starters, just like Lescott last season and that worked a treat. As for Baines, he’s injured as far as I know so its a bit unfair to suggest he should be playing. I’m not pro-Moyes or anti-Moyes, but comments like that really get my back up.

Doesn’t the fact that Spurs fans EXPECT (sic) to beat Everton when in fact they have been walloped at home twice in successive years by Everton say more about the shortcomings of Spurs fans than the way Everton play? Football is about picking up points, not about whether some idiots think they have a divine right to win or not. There is a difference between looking at a fixture list, statistics and past history and then looking at the present side you are about to play.

In my younger days, travelling home and away, I had the misfortune of going to White Hart Lane on many occasions, and my impression still is that their fans in general are the least knowledgeable of all I came across. Overall, they are more concerned with pretty-pretty than cutting edge football. The type of ball-jugglers they always want at their club ("a typical Spurs player") is hardly ever the type that will dig in and grind out results to win leagues when things are tough.

Make your judgements based on what goes on on the pitch, not on Opta statistics.

Your conclusions are completely flawed.

Have you actually watched Man City this season Iain? They have so far been very lucky, they came up against a shocking West Ham side, narrowly defeated newly promoted Derby at home then got battered by Man U for 89 mins and on another day would have conceded about 6 !! Yes they have started well results wise but they will fade away to mid table in no time if they carry on playing like they are. P.s A lot of my family support city so thats how I keep up with them!

The gist of your post Ian came with a huge helping of sarcasm, to be fair David Moyes does show unswerving loyalty to a number of player’s and I also believe he doesnt like too much change at once. However, its wide of the mark to suggest that he has spent the best part of £25m to leave players sitting on the bench.

I agree with Joe C that Spurs fans are the least knowledgable that I’ve come across. Their expectation that they will beat could at least be based on the fact that they have beaten us 17 times in the premiership compared to our four wins againsnt them - one of which was last week, this would justify their expectation they would beat us at their home ground and the fact that they had spent £40m+ in the close season and were being tipped by most football pundits to break the top four.

Which was exactly the point I mentioned in my mail. The fact that very poor Everton sides have been playing Spurs for nearly all of those 17 occasions means jackshit when the whistle blows. Any fool with half a brain could see that the Everton sides of more recent years have been steadily improving - apart apparently from the White Farce Lane mugs, including their board. £40m - nearly half of which on an overrated striker might raise expectations with the Spurs board who apparently demand a top four place while ignoring the fact that their defence and midfield are average at best, and seemingly unaware that better teams than them to start with have also spent very heavily. Thankfully, money can’t buy team spirit and organisation.

Anyway, this is an Everton not Spurs board but I can’t stand the gobshites. I think it goes back to a 2-1 defeat in the 80’s when Tony Cottee scored first and I was sitting in a home part of their ground. I’m pleased as punch that Everton have apparently precipitated their recent shambolic behaviour!

Rant over.
