Redknapp's revolving door

Comments (19)

The Yak is priced way over the odds for a hit-and-miss (a lot) player. So maybe Nugent's now worth a punt at around the £4.5M mark, which was Everton's original sticking offer. Remember, after the £7M being bandied about, DN eventually went for an undisclosed fee ? I suspect a lot nearer £4.5M than £7M. Redknapp may simply not fancy him ? his "sign 'em up... sling 'em out" policy at West Ham still has Hammers mates of mine perplexed. Perhaps the lad's suffering from Unsy Syndrome and he's simply homesick. Of the two, I think it's worth the £4.5M risk on DN rather than blow another £8M on top for someone who, I suspect, will simply deliver more frustration to the fans in the stands than goals on the park.

It’s a bit harsh on Nugget (to his mates) he’s hardly been given a chance.

I think if we did sign him he would be absolutely raring to prove a point to ’apless ’arry.

Nugent isnt the finished article and already we have Vaughan, Anichebe and Justiewicz in the category of up and coming strikers. Vaughan if he stays fit will go on to play for England the boy is sheer class. Therefore we need to sign a proven target man with a useful record scoring such as Yakubu, The Dunc wasnt a great scorer but his sheer presence was enough to unsettle any defence like the night he scored against Utd and Rio Ferdinand was given a physical battering by the big man

After my usual traipse around the various rumour mills and transfer gossip sites, one thing is becoming alarmingly clear... That is a certain Mr H Redknapp has come to the conclusion that he may have spent unwisely on a certain acquisition from Preston and is now hawking him around as a possible makeweight in other deals.

While it's nice to have players at the club that are lifelong Evertonians, it don't count for much if they can't actually hack it in the Premier League... a conclusion, it would seem, that Mr Redknapp has come to about Mr Nugent. Maybe those who were baying for D Moyes's head when he refused to budge on his valuation /rating of the player can now leave the manager to do his job when it comes to the transfer market.

Firstly he is not overpriced when put into context - the whole market is "overheated" and I don’t see that changing, especially not before the market closes!

Secondly, you say he is "a hit-and-miss (a lot) player". What are you making that judgement on? His scoring record is 1 in 2/2.5, whenever I watch him play he looks a threat and although he looked awful for Borough the other day, I think that’s because he wants off. To me that’s his problem, his attitude.

On the other hand you want Nugent who has a 1 in 3/3.5 record, from what I have seen can score great goals, but is quiet for large parts of the game. He also lacks the physique of Yakubu and isn’t much younger.

If we have the money we should go for Yakubu, and I don’t see what this obsession with Nugent is about.

I’ll be very surprised if Nugent leaves Pompey this side of Christmas, or even this season to be honest. Even in the current market, £6m-7m was way over the odds for him

I tend to agree with Tom,yes we should go for Yakubu but there is this nagging suspicion about attitude, and theres no way after his usual bright starts that a dip in form will be tolerated by David Moyes. It appears from his own words "exasperation" that Yak has given Southgate a real dilemma during the last week, do we really want a sulker, the same could be said of Anelka at Bolton who appears unsettled, finding a good uncomplicted pro (AJ)these days is becoming increasingly difficult. Personally, although now late in the day, how about having a punt on Fred (the bonus king ?)from Lyon, a proven goalscorer who wants to come to the premiership, anyone who has watched him knows he is class with head and feet and i am sure no more expensive than Yakubu. And finally I have to laugh at all of these ridiculous statements where in the context of David Nugent,"if the price is right" buy the player,on these grounds should you take a chance on a player ? NEVER ! !, as for the case of Nugent if he is not good enough at £6M, having him on offer at £4.5M will not make him an any better striker or investment, a fool and his money Mr Rednapp ?, if a striker is proven quality in top grade football and available, then its up to the buyer, in most cases you get what you pay for, although the top end does get inflated !Hopefully Manny is now in, somebody please confirm, and lets get Vogel in from Betis, a great passer of the ball who protects the back four. I feel we could all be in for a nail biter as the clock ticks down. never a dull moment being a blue.

Not signed yet: coming over to discuss personal terms and undertake a medical. If it’s anything like the Fernandes saga, his arrival will be announced around Xmas!

Yakubu has played in shit struggling teams since he came to this country and has always got goals. His attitude might be questioned but I feel reassured by the fact that him a Yobo seem like mates. I’m sure through Joey he has got a realistic handle of the club, the manager & what Moyes will expect from him. Being based in England he knows all about the Everton way and that he will be expected to work hard and become the first line of defence whereas guys like Wagner Love & Fred would be in for a massive culture shock when they realise the Moyes way of playing up front.
I think Yakubu could prove to a Beattie-esque flop in the long term but you have to take a gamble to try and get to the next level.

On a positive note, if all goes through I am immensely happy with our transfer activity this Summer. I hope all the doubters and panic crew take a good long look at themselves. I wont miss Richardson, Koumas, Smith, Nugent and all the other also rans who we were linked with over the early summer. I am really positive about this season....shit I ve done it now...

With regards to the investment-what investment you on about Steve? The money we have spent is about consistent with the players we have sold and the premier league money windfall, not forgetting the European money to come.
I dont belive for one minute that we have investors or that spurs fan Robert Earl digging deep. It’s just money that we have not splashed about unlike other teams. Davey Moyes deserves a lot of credit for the way in which he looks after the well being of the clubs finances. A big pat on the back for Bill Kenwright too.

Dont believe everything you read on Wikipedia Steve, It’s unreliable as some people can add un substantiated rumours /information at any time.
Would be nice though if Mettal did come in for us....as long as he bought a nice big plot of land in the Loop!
Lets not go down that route huh....

Yakubu is sencond only to Henry in Premiership scoring charts of last 4 season, so Everton, if we do indeed sign him, can boast having the most prolific striker in the country of last 4 years.

His attitude could be an issue, however I think Moyes and Evertons dressing room can help their. Also, with Vic and Vaughan hot on his heels if he doesn’t pull his weight at any moment he can be dropped, which is something he has never had before as at boro theo only other options where Jason Euell.

The most important thing of this ’signing’ is it means we will play 4-4-2. We will have 2 full backs who like to attack, 2 quick centre backs. A creative winger and in Manny a creative centre mid who is big and strong. Along with the work-horse midfielders. plus 2 quick strikers, both of whom can finish and like to play with ball at feet not in air. I firmly believe we are developing in a team that can play attractive attacking football.

now I’m just waiting for news that Yakubu fails medical, Fernandes is poached by Liverpool at 11th hour and Everton sign Jan Koller and Jermain Jenas instead, that would be more like it.

What an excellent idea.

Go in for a player deemed (according to no-one in particular) not good enough for Portsmouth ?

Can anyone else spot the obvious flaws in this masterplan ?
