Fred Pickering

Sorry to tell you this folks, but one of our heroes is currently in hospital. The great fred Pickering is in the Royal Blackburn Hospital. A great player and friend in our town unfortunately the big man has had a stroke. Don't think he will thank me for this but I know he still has his fans and I am certainly one of them.

Sad indeed. Though I’d obviously never swap the legend of Mike Trebilcock, 1966 and all that, I always feel a little bit for Fred because, while he hasn’t exactly been airbrushed from our history, he doesn’t figure in bygone reflections in perhaps the way that his quality stats deserve. And I think in most part that’d won to the way 66 panned out. But 56 goals in 97 league games is blinding. And he’s still our record European goalscorer (with 9 - I think me nan’s second!). Let’s hope AJ or the Yak (I’m iffy, I must say...especially about calling him "the Yak" - it’s gotta stop) can claim that crown this season! Get well Fred.

Its very sad, remember calling him when he won a penalty for Blackburn at Ewood park but soon forgave him with his hat trick debut against forest I think it was was unlucky to miss the final in 66 and was never the same after it.Best wishes Fred get well soon mate

The first game I went to see was against Blackburn 1963/64 season. We got beat 4-1 at GP with Fred scoring a hat trick (please correct me if I am wrong).
What I am certain of is his debut against Forest and his hat trick this time for us!
Irrespective of that, this guy is indelibly etched into my heritage with regards EFC.
Much underrated but a true no.9 in the Everton tradition.
Hope he gets better.

’..bless all the Alexes, the Freddies too, bless all the boys that are wearing the blue’!
I remember the ball used to bounce of his shins a lot, but give him a sniff of a goal and he would usually put it away.I also remember the terrible Quiff! Get well soon Fred.

Being born in 1974 I was unable to see the likes of Fred and other stellar players of the mid 1960s in their prime. I would like to take this opportunity to wish himself and his family all the best and hope for a quick recovery. Already we have lost too many greats. Get well soon Fred.

The mans a legend at Bloomfield. I Had the pleasure of meeting him at our recent 120th Anniversary, a more humble, genuine bloke you couldn’t ask to meet. Get well soon Fred, from Seasiders everywhere. Preston 0 Blackpool 3. Preston relegated and Blackpool promoted on that night by a Pickering hattrick, never to be forgotten.
