I have just read that there is a rumour that Yakubu has lied about his age. Supposedly it is commom with African strikers. I have now heard rumours about Martins, Kanu and Yakubu. Is it true? Wasn't Bakayoko about 10 years older than he said?. Maybe that's why Yakubu fails to score in the second part of the season is because he is burned out due to being in his 40s.

Who did you hear the rumours from?. Some nutjob on one of these types of mailbags/message boards?. Of course he is 24..Have you seen him play?. Wayne Rooney looked about 38 when he broke onto the scene at Everton way back in 2002..Talk sense and dont listen to silly talk.

McFadden is in fact 48 years old and Stubbs really is a schoolboy. Please keep this a secret!

Fact; any player who joins the Club undergoes a vigorous medical, fact ; any player especially one for £11 million will have all his documents, birth certificate, passport and visa checked. There is also a scientific way of telling the age of a person by doing an X Ray of the wrist which measures the age of the bones, I would also suspect that more complex scans are undertaken including a bone densitomitry scan. Just because Yakubu comes from Nigeria there seems to be this ongoing speculation, can I have your sort code and bank account number Conor ?

I have just recieved this e-mail from a Nigerian associate:- Hello there - Mr Kenwrong, great leader of Everpool. I am supporter for many years. Prince Yakubu is my third cousin, twice removed and it is true - his age is a lie. He is clearly only 15 years old. Therefore the transfer fee is not £11.25 but £27 m. Please send much money now to Chief Umbungo, c/o Lagos High Security Prison, (Fraud Wing).

Dear Mr Kenwrong. Now that we have initiated business together, and realise that we are business men of the same ilk, I feel I can offer you the deal of the next century. My cousin, Mr Terence Leahundy, has some space just behind his quality grocery stall in downtown Abuja. This he is willing to sell to you for just 100m of your English pounds. My aunts 5th cousin’s brother, will build you a magnificent football pitch for your many fine supporters. Please have your associate Mr Keith Clueless wire me the money. Yours, Chief Umbungo, c/o Lagos High Security Prison, (Fraud Wing).

Rumours.
Obafemi Martins did not lie about his age, that was just a petty rumour, much like that which you are accepting here. And no Bakayoko wasn’t ten years older than he said.
I find these remarks distateful, dim-witted, and quite frankly racist.
Why not welcome our record signing instead of making quips about the credibility of his character and his national peoples.
Jog on.

Mike O - yes they do have passports and birth certificates in Nigeria. The official ones and the ones you can buy from the excellent fraudsters that reside there. They are so good at it they can even copy the new biometric passports that our Govt think are fraud proof. And Daniel, this is fact and not racism. Just ask Chief Umbungo (above).

Apologies if I’m repeating as I didn’t have time to read every response, but this rumour has been spread about almost every African striker since Roger Milla in the 1990 World Cup. I don’t reckon it matter if how old he is, as long as he’s fit and strong and scores goals.

I agree with Mike, but also the added bonus that if we sell him in 3 years time he’ll still only be 24...

Daniel Greenwood how is it racist. Martins for example made his debut in 1999 yet he is still only 22. That means he would have been 14 years old making his debut in the seria A league. Celstine Babayaro also told Glenn Roader that Martins used to play in the Nigeria uner 21s with Obafemi Martins. How old is Babayaro? He is 28 years old.
I have been told by my family memebers that Yakubu played in the nigerian league for five years before moving to Isreali team Maccabi Haifa. These I can tell you are just rumours but If you read yesterdays Mirror you will see an article about Yak and his age.
I dont believe these articles as I was just trying to have a little laugh and joke. Everyone is accepting Yakubu so stop crying.

I’m not having this.
If you single-out a group of individuals for criticism, and collectively it’s Nigerian players here, it constitutes as a racism.
This being rumour, as Glenn Roeder slammed it when Martins signed, which he also described as ’insulting’, and rightly so, it is racism on the part of those within the media who circled it initially, with a lack of fact.
It now constitutes a prejudice - an unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason - when you circle it in some pointless lunchtime thread on the internet, which is home to such mindless gabbling (the net I mean, Toffeeweb is really rather eloquent of late).
Call me what you want. But think about what you’re saying.
I’m not calling everyone in this thread that makes a joke out of a racist, but it is certainly the root of some lazy xenophobia on behalf of the creator of the initial rumour, so drop it, and get behind the twenty-four-year-old.
Kisses.

The rumour was started of by Nigerian forums. I read it in the paper and passed it on as I would any other article.
