The Mail Bag

Farewell, Everton. Hello, Tesco Dons

Before I comment, can I say that I bear the people of Kirkby no ill-will, and that I believe an Evertonian born in Liverpool is no more inherently a legitimate ?blue? than one born in Kurdistan.

Right then...

In choosing to depart the city of Liverpool, Kenwright, Wyness and those who voted ?yes? have - for this Evertonian at least - divested the words ?Everton Football Club? of much of their meaning and identity, and without meaning and identity, success, victory, the acquisition of trophies etc., have precisely no value whatever.

Regardless of what happens on the pitch, however many choose to turn up at the ?Every Little Helps Theatre of Affordable Dreams?, however many European cups are paraded through the streets of a new town in the north west of England, I for one will not be joining in. Such spectacles will mean as much to me as news of a midweek friendly win for Wigan Athletic.

This is obviously a very personal response to the decision and I?m not so narcissistic as to expect that my views could or should have any bearing on the views anyone else. At this moment, I feel deeply sad, that?s all. Whether you decide to follow the club to Kirkby or not, very best wishes to all Evertonians.

Steve, there is nothing new in your post that we have not heard or read before.
P.s If leaving Liverpool is such a bad thing. Why are you in Leicester - does it make you any less of a blue?

See ya then. If they moved to Manchester I’d still go and support the team. I wasn’t 100% sure about Kirkby especially after seeing the plans compared to how it could have been at the Kings Dock, but I’d support the club wherever they move.

’Everton’ aren’t in Everton. Now it’s a possibility that Everton won’t be in the city that their name comes from (a city that didn’t even cover ’Everton’ until after the club was founded, had it done then we’d probably be called ’Liverpool’). What’s the difference?

My mind ended up being against the move but only on financial grounds. I believe there was more money to be made in a resurgent Liverpool than a town who will have a small amount of regeneration. Liverpool city is world reknowned. Kirkby is not.

"I for one will not be joining in"

See you then Steve Rooney, this club doesn’t need fans like you. Fans that would drop it just because they moved. Let me ask you a question Steve, if one of your family members moved would you never go and see them again?
Get a life.

Do you seriously think that anyone outside of the city will be saying, "so your going up to Kirkby for the Everton game then?" Of course not. No f*cker from any other part of the country even knows that Kirkby is outside Liverpool. Thats because, invisible boundary aside....ITS NOT!

Seriously get over it will you.

Well Steve,at least we now know there are at least 15,000 morons who STILL believe all the shite and deceit that comes out of billy liars mouth! My only hopeis that they have the decency to come on here and appologise when it all goes tits up in four or five years time!I won’t hold my breath though!!

Colin, for your information I voted No.

Now that the votes are in though, do we really need fans who say they are prepared to drop the club. I for one think it’s folly, I wonder how many of these fans will change their minds. They’ll be the ones who look stupid when they start turning up to games when they were adamant they wouldn’t not me.

Possibly the worst piece on the move since we started, you deserve a round opf applause for that one lad.

I know this is an emotive issue, and for the record im in the "no camp", but lets have a bit of realism here please.

Yes it hurts
Yes the club needs to move on
Yes it should have been done long ago before it got to this desperate point.

But this is how it is now fellas, lets get on with it. It dosent mean we stop going the game or love the club less.

An for everyone in the "no team", including the toffeweb boys; if you feel that as a clun we will loose our identity, traditions or fan base then its up to you to do something about it. It will be the supporters of now and duriing the move that will help secure our future not Bully, Billy Liar or Tesco!

Steve you are following in the footsteps of your namesake "Wayne". But that is your choice and I accept that but dont be coming back if we become successful again.

I voted NO to Kirkby and am very sad with the outcome but I will still follow Everton anywhere they play. Your a sell out mate and I have no respect for you.

Fair comments them Steve not a million miles from the way a good number of us are thinking at present.
However, things are a little bit raw at the mo, lets just wait and see what eventually happens, that will be the time for any ultimate deciscion. Until then, dont quit fighting for an alternative, good luck to you mate.

I cant believe you would say the fans that voted No are not real Evertonians. Of course we are. We wanted Everton to remian where they are and where they should be. Moving to Kirkby is basically transforming who we are.

Dont get me wrong i will try to make it to as many games as possible when we are at Kirkby, but i will feel less emotional about my club because we have moved from its real home.

So what happens if the boundary of Liverpool is extended again in the future, to include Kirkby, just as it was after we moved to Goodison, which wasn’t in Liverpool at the time. We have been through this before. Having said that, there is still a long way to go to conclude this move, with the people of Kirkby having to approve it, planning permits all needing to get approved before anything can be finalized, and so on. To everyone around the country Kirkby is part of Liverpool, and Everton is still part of Liverpool, their stadium will just be a mile or so across an imaginary line.

15   Posted 24/08/2007 at 15:47:09

I’ve said it before, while we’re going through some ’changes’, why don’t we just become Liverpool Everton FC. No confusion then.

Don’t really see the problem myself; Man U are in Salford, Chelsea are in Fulham... it seems that success doesn’t depend on playing where your name suggests you play.

English Football has become global and more and more revenue doesn’t come from the gate. In 20 years time it’ll probably be franchised like American Football and Everton will play in Bristol or some other city that needs a good team!

16   Posted 24/08/2007 at 15:48:17

Why are all you location obsessed ’No’ voters going on about the boundaries of Liverpool? Surely if it is THAT important then you should be rebelling ’cos it’ll no longer be in the district of Everton! A move to Kirkby does me no favours (longer travelling time) and I would have voted ’No’ if I got a vote, but the thought of not still supporting EFC doesn’t enter my head. Ask yourselves again when emotions calm down if location is really the be all of your football team and if it is then ask yourself why you are not going to support the team that are getting a ground a few 100 yards from GP. ’Be a red you say’,’Impossible!’ Then there must be more to your feelings for the club than its exact location.

As a "no" voter I am disapointed with the outcome of the vote, but I am man enough to accept it and the move on. My son and I will be buying our season tickets even if the Kirkby move comes off.
In the early eighties I attended all the Everton home matches with seven friends, standing in the Paddock. Over the years they have all drifted off one by one using various excuses such as,"I won’t go whilst Peter Johnson is the Chairman or " I won’t buy a season ticket with Walter Smith in charge". These friends never returned even when their wishes where granted, but in reality they where in the place that their wives wanted them to be, sitting on the sofa on a Wednesday evening watching Coronation Street or shopping on a Saturday afternoon.
So to these people who say that they will not attend any Everton matches again, have a nice life as a house husband, I can guarantee that you will not be missed.

Now that its finally official, that we are off to the wastelands of Kirkby (nothing against Kirkby and its people by the way), we will finally get to see BK et al in a true light. Is it just a coincidence that every club from Accrington Stanley to York City have been linked with takeover bids, yet EFC have not even had so much as a Zimbarbwian $ (or whatever there worthless currency is)thrust in their direction. Call me cynical, but I will bet you a grand to a penny that the aforementioned BK et al will sell up to the first Russian, American or Martian who come up with the necessary readies once this new tinpot stadium has been built. Kirkby is a sell out, pure and simple. It will line the pockets of Kenwright and his cronies, and will leave us with a legacy that we will never recover from.

22   Posted 24/08/2007 at 17:26:36

Paul C,

Give it a rest with the tedious paranoia.

Your opinion is that it’s a sell out and that Kenwright and co. are all satans children intent on bringing EFC to it’s knees for the sake of few quid in their own pockets ?

Don’t be so bloody stupid.

23   Posted 24/08/2007 at 17:01:58

Although I voted no and don’t fancy the move to Kirkby on grounds of moving too far from a thriving city centre, it’s unthinkable that someone would abandon the club on such a point.

Despite my reservations and disappointment with the vote result, I’m not in the ’end of the club’ group of no voters. To be honest, shedding fans like this lad can’t be a great loss if 4 miles can ruin their allegiance.

I followed Everton when they played in Walton (which isn’t Everton!) and I’ll follow them in Kirkby. Get a fucking hold of yourelf man.

25   Posted 24/08/2007 at 18:19:51

As I have said elsewhere, since when has Kirkby not been part of Liverpool?

Its like saying that Bootle, Crosby and Huyton aren’t Liverpool just because they are outside the official city boundary.

Manchester United aren’t actually in Manchester in terms of the official boundary either!
tom morris
26   Posted 24/08/2007 at 18:42:35

Mike Homfray,

Spot on.

I live in Crosby and there’s a load of Blues round here. I’ve never lived ’within the city boundary’ but would always consider myself a scouser.

This whole aspect of the debate is pointless, though, and need to get a grip.

For christs sake, Kirkby is Liverpool! Just as much as Speke - and I’d rather be in Kirkby than Speke. Steve, you wouldn’t know the difference coming from Leicester.

Kirkby isnt in Liverpool whereas Speke is. People from Kirkby are scousers who have moved out of the city boundary. Yes it does have an L postcode but so does Southport. Would anyone want us to move to Southport? I very much doubt it.

The fact of the matter is Kirkby, Crosby, Bootle and Huyton are not in Liverpool. Why wouldnt people move to Speke? I live in inner city liverpool and Speke is closer than Kirkby so in my eyes I would rather have the stadium there.

"The limited margin of the result will no doubt spark debate over whether the Board has a sufficiently strong mandate to press ahead with plans to leave Goodison Park" .... only from people with no sense of what democracy means. If the vote was the same margin the other way would you be saying that? No. Debate over. The club moves on. Get behind it.

First up, I am in Melbourne, Australia, so no doubt every other person posting on the site will say the ground argument is none of my business. That said, I have followed Everton for 40 years and I find it sad that at least on this site, the fans are pulling themselves apart. The vote was near enough 60-40 in favour of the move - there isn’t a political leader in the world who wouldn’t kill for an election victory like that. It’s decisive. What happened to the thousands who could have voted and didn’t ? Presumably the anti-camp will take it as a silent protest. Stop calling us the People’s Club is one suggestion - why? No other club has given their fans a vote on moving. A final point - how curious is it that so many people are hung up over which boundary the club is within, yet are desperate to splash the cash on every overseas player going? If we’re taIking local identity, isn’t there a contradiction there? Fact is, many people in Britain, let alone the rest of the world, either view Everton as a Liverpool club or don’t have a clue where they’re actually based. What they recognise is a famous name with a proud history and loyal supporters. A move to Kirkby won’t change that.

Nick Harrison, "Liverpool city is world reknowned. Kirkby is not."

Liverpool is world reknowned for 2 things: Liverpool FC & home of the Beatles. Sorry, very few people outside Liverpool (UK?) really understand that Everton is IN Liverpool.
