The Future, not the Past

So it looks like Fernandes has found his deal elsewhere... good luck to him. Very young, a decent player IN PROSPECT but still a risk as a long-term signing. This is hardly the end of the world for the Blues.

So... five days of 'window' remain. Where to now ? ... Bolton? The right money would get Nolan who could well be a more proven central midfield player than the young lad from Portugal would have been. Nobody, watching David Moyes's sides, could possibly mistake these selections for a subtle team and with that in mind the more solid Nolan is the kind of player who might be a better fit. Don't get me wrong.... I enjoyed the 'Golden Vision', the big FOUR from the championship (never forget the brilliant Morissey) , and Howard's 80s side and these sides were a delight to watch. Today we are far from easy on the eye with a lot of contributors to this site complaining about hoofball and it is just a thought that, on the evidence of both home matches this season, Fernandes might have spent most of his time at Goodison watching the ball flying over his head.... Ask AJ if you doubt me!

Nolan is the right age, probably the right price and, as far as I am aware, Bolton can give us a 'clean transfer' and government sanction would not be needed in order to play him.

Possibly Glen not as exciting not as much promise but solid. Don?t want to say it but a poor mans Gerrard.

In another thread I suggested Juan Roman Riquelme but although a big name he could be a risk.

He has not played in the Prem and by all accounts had a bad season last year.(for him). he is available for around 10 mill amd Spurs and Boro are sniffing around.

We only have 5 days and if we are to get someone it has to be done dam quick. more like the signings last year rather than this.

Kevin Nolan is NOT the answer. He is not a player that will take us to the next level and that is what we need.

Hey lads,

It’s all spilt milk now, hey? There’s nothing we’re going to do in the next four days.

Here’s hoping the boys just galvanise and strengthen our ’last gang in town’ mentality, and prosper. At least in the short-term. Stranger things have happened, like Marcus Bent leading the line to a fourth place finish? Let’s just get on with it. I reckon we’ll do alright.

Im sorry Glen but actually watch Nolan before you judge him. He is complete and utter shite. Bolton fans think he is crap and he hasent been good for the past year and a half.

He is a poor mans Cahill and that is saying something considering Cahill is not the most gifted. How is Fernandes just some Portuguese kid? He is one of the best youngsters in Europe and he is better than all our team bar Arteta.

Sorry folks.........a couple of things need to be said here.

I never said that Nolan was a great player.... he is solid but are we in some danger of making out the Fernandes is right now a far better player than he really is?

We have been associated with two Argentinian players in the recent past and while either or both might have had trouble settling into English football as indeed had the maestro Veron , both of these players must be seen as far better today than Fernandes.........a great prospect but if we are being honest not really a Moyes kind of player.

Like many of our contributors I do not trust the present regime at Everton to be either honest with us or indeed competent in running our beloved club but I do NOT believe this was some kind of smokescreen to influence the stadium vote.

How I treasure the years when Sir John not only funded our great club but took the time to walk with the fans ahead of matches.

Anyway we have a week -and if the Daily Mail is to be believed - a ton of money to put this right.

Seriously was Fernandes ever going to be worth the £12 million the Mail said we had agreed to pay for him ?

Lastly..........let?s get it out in the open David Moyes coaches big-ball , ale-house football from the get the thing and lump it forward school of footy.

If you were Fernandes would you not feel more at home signing for the silky Valencia rather than today?s Everton?

I am Blue to the bone but even I believe the lad is far better off in Valencia and we will go ahead with a more ?Moysie? type of solid signing in the next few days.

Think about this Connor...............we have had weeks , maybe months to sign Fernandes ?

Do you really believe he would not have been snapped up by an elite side if he had been ?one of the best youngsters in Europe today? ?

If he was really that good , why would he not be at Chelsea or Arsenal or Man U or dare I suggest it across the park with the Red Shite.

Let?s keep Mr Fernandes in proportion.

He is hardly the new Figo , Colunna or even the next Ronaldo........surely that would be Nani ?

I promise you I am not going into hiding on this question and after the transfer window closes, I will tell you exactly what I think of our 2007/8 squad and anybody who feels the urge can come back to this site at the end of the season and tell me if my opinions are wrong.

A busy week ahead for Everton methinks !

Please try to keep a thought in your hearts for young Rhys Jones? family in their struggle to come to terms with real life problems in that same week !

errr dude valencia are an elite side...

champions league regulars [semi finals last year], title contenders in spain, massive new futuristic stadium in the works. They are better than Arsenal are and just as good as Liverpool. You’ve given me the impression you don’t really follow football outside of this country...

With five days left expect either nothing or a panic buy, all of this "promise but no guarantee" is bitter talk, we all know Fernandes was a class player or does your anger cloud your memory of the Man Utd goal or how he tore the Arsenal midfield apart with one of the best showboating I’ve seen in years. For whatever reason we have missed out AGAIN big time. With so little time left a selling club has the firm advantage, we have left it too late thanks to the vote crap and will be charged whatever the selling club wants to charge NOT what we want to pay, why would they not play hardball as we are at the disadvantage not them, anyone not yet sold would more than likely not be for sale or crap, if their league has already kicked off surely any quality players will be cup tied too. Whoever has provided the money for spending on player’s be it Earl or Sky it is being used too late thanks again to Bill and that vote, the deals could and should have been done and dusted weeks ago.

Glen, Fernandes showed that he was a lot more than potential. I dont know if you go the match but I do and in every game he was the best or one of the best players on the pitch.

Nolan a solid player? Ask Bolton fans how good or solid he is. They dont even think he does enough to get into there midfield so I wouldnt want him in ours. Some of our fans seem to think every scouse player would be good in our team...... Why? I would have Fernandes over Barton and Nolan.

Fernandes is one of the best young midfielders in europe. No he is not the next Ronaldo or Figo but he is not a winger. He is a central midfielder who has been compared to Makelele by the likes of Jose Mourinho and Giovanni Trapattoni and that is good enough for me.

Not a Moyes type player? If we dont buy the likes of Fernandes and Arteta then we will never progress to the next level. How can you compare Veron to Manuel Fernandes? Fernandes showed in about 19 games with both Portsmouth and Everton that he was capable of mixing it with the best whereas Veron struggled with the pace and rough and tumble of the english game.

Fernandes talent was bigger than Arteta’s in my opinion. If we look back to the 9 games they played together they both impressed. And while the both flourished against the likes of Watford, Blackburn and Portsmouth Arteta struggled against the likes of Arsenal and Man utd. Fernandes performance against Arsenal was probably his best. He showed brillaint passing ranges, quick feet and a willingness to work whereas Arteta had an off day again against one of the top four.

Why do you have to be playing for an "Elite" club to be a class player? Is Jermaine Pennant a world class player? Is Flamini a class player? Is Darren Flecher a class player? Is Diarra a class player? No none of the players I mentioned are class and none of them are better than Manuel Fernandes yet they still ply there trade for the likes of Man utd, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool.

Fernandes was a quality player and not just potential as you call it.

Mark

Valencia is an elite side - really ?

Champions League for them , I suppose ?

No ?

I think you are confusing Valencia with Barcelona or Real Madrid or even Sevilla , the current UEFA Cup holders.

Better than Arsenal , as good as Liverpool ?

Now that is just silly !

Valencia is a decent football side and a very nice city to live in - and a lot of people are tipping them to take 3rd place in Spain this year while Sevilla concentrates on Champions League but that is all still to come.

The fact remains that Fernandes has been hawked around Europe by both of his owners and finally they seem to have found a deal that suits them.
