Everton or Valencia?

Comments (21)

Imagine if you can, you?re a 21-year-old footballer currently out of favour at your current club. You have no affiliation to any club, you are merely an employee. During the summer transfer window, there has been little interest in your availability until near the end of the window. Everton, a club you have spent 6 months on loan with, suddenly put in a bid of £6M for half of your playing rights.

Okay, so they are not one of the better-known European clubs but at least they have some history & obviously have enough money available to afford the bid. They are also in the Uefa Cup so there is some hope of appearing in the European ?shop window?.You grab the chance of first-team football & negotiate a deal. However, due to FA rules, the deal is held up due to third-party part-ownership being against the rules.

Everton FC then negotiate with the third party to buy their half in order to comply with the rules. This, of course, takes time & in the meantime you spend time at the club, signing autographs etc & build up some goodwill for your impending transfer... Suddenly, you receive a call from your agent advising you that Valencia are interested in signing you for a much higher fee & probably a much higher weekly wage. The problems associated with third-party part-ownership don?t exist in Spain so the whole deal can be done within a 24-hour timeframe. You jump on a plane to Valencia & negotiate a deal.

Here then are your options:

Stick with the original deal & hope that Everton can conclude the deal with the third party before the window closes? (If this fails you?ve just wasted 5 months of your life). Play at a ground that is past it?s sell-by date for a few years, then move on to a ?cowshed? in a socially & economically deprived area out of town? Play a style of football that closely resembles rugby in that ?up & under? is the order of the day, the only difference being that the team doesn?t move forward en mass as in rugby? Live in a country where the taxes are high & the weather is crap?
Or
Conclude a deal in 24 hours, receive more money, play stylish football at a very nice stadium, have the added advantage of a Champions League shop window, pay less tax & live in a country where the sun shines all year round?
Bit of a ?no brainer? really

Correct in what you say Barry but Kenwright and his board should of had something in place to stop this happening. Some kind of exclusivity deal they are so fond of.

I agree, I think fair play to Fernandes if the offer came in late on, with perhpas the risk of no deal being reached with the 3rd party and having to stay at Benfica. I don’t buy the sentiment that we’ve ’had a lucky escape’ from a mercenary player. It seems he accepted the best offer for him. He isn’t an Everton fan, and only an idiot never changes their mind.

Is the Mestalla a very nice stadium, or is it an old ground that is considered by some to be the Spanish equivalent of Goodison Park? Did Valencia play stylish football in losing 3-0 at home to Villarreal last night? And does the sun really shine all year round in Spain? Apart from the opportunity of Champions League football, there isn’t as big a gulf between Everton and Valencia as you might think. In fact, were Valencia a British club, Evertonians would think themselves at least on a par with the Mestalla side.

Patrick
The main difference between Everton & Valencia is that they conclude a deal in less than 24 hours while we faff about for weeks.
The fact that Mestalla doesn’t have a roof would suggest that the sun shines more often than not.

Patrick, when was the last time Valencia won the league and when was the last time Everton have? 2004 and 1987 repectively. There is more chance of Valencia winning the league than Everton and Valencia have been in champions league consistently. I think you’ll find that Valencia are better than Everton at the moment. I also think he saw are performance against Blackburn and didn’t fancy the way we played football.

It states on Tribal Football, that we are now turning our attention back to Vogel? I thought that deal was dead and buried because of his pay dispute with Betis?

Greg don’t forget that with the £12 mil deal for 21 year old Manny collapsing we can just about afford £1.5 mil for an 31 year old replacement

Hahaha ! Nice post. It makes a lot of sense when you put it this way. You know what if I wasn’t an Everton man and had to choose between Valencia and Everton, I would choose Valencia any day.

EFC were STUPID in not nailing down his signature earlier and were lucky so far that no other interested party came sniffing. Hope they realise how big a mistake this was. 12 million pounds should get us another decent midfielder though. It is definitely not the end of the world.

What I’m surprised at is the fact that people are having a go at Fernandes. Haven’t we learnt anything from the Rooney saga? If even he had no loyalty to Everton, why do people expect Fernandes to?

Our board is a farce, this deal should have been sorted even before the end of the season. How many times have we been caught out like this now?
The category of errors that our chairman has been in charge of makes it very difficult to continue supporting this current regime. How long are people going to keep making excuses for him? And how can anyone trust him to move our great club away from Goodison?

Sorry, guys, not convinced by any of this ’should have nailed him down earlier’ talk. He is part-owned 50%. How do you legally nail him down when this guy still hasn’t agreed to sell him yet? Nice idea, but I don’t think what you are saying is actually possible.

The Rooney fiasco is nothing like Fernandes’s deal. Rooney was an evertonian, came through the ranks and signed a contract with everton where as Fernandes is portuguese, has no affiliation to the club and was only at the club for 6 months on loan.

I say good luck to the lad. Obviously I am dissapointed but life moves on. Valencia is better of him for both personal reasons aswell as playing reasons. Spain is not far from Portugal which is close to his family, the weather is better and he will be playing with better players in a better competition e.g. Champions league.

As people have said its a no brainer. What I would like to see now is Arteta moved into the middle of the park and Pienaar on the wing. We are in desperate need for creativity and flair and Arteta is the only player suited to playing in the middle of the park.

Our board definitely has its fair share of the blame for this transfer fiasco, but consider these points as well:

1. English football has probably the most over-bureaucratised yet least transparent structure in Europe.

2. There is a very real competition between football regulations, and the stricter the rules are, the less attractive the country becomes. The Spanish system is by far more open. Basically they don’t care about anything and you can even get a Spanish passport in two years if you’re non-EU.
3. Premier League clubs have to pay the price for this competitive disadvantage in granting higher wages. I’m absolutely sure Fernandes will earn less money in Valencia. His agent and Global Slaver Enterprises will get more, however.
4. Nothing can justify parading in the executive box one day and signing for another team a day later. Legal action should be taken if possible.

He’s gone now, out of sight out of mind. I hope the greedy lil runt gets frozen out at the Mestalla.
Really hoping we don’t rush into a signing though. We should bide our time and see what is out there in January.

The sad thing is we have been made to look at laughing stock. Vogel is no compensation for missing one of Europes premier young talents.

We have dithered and fucking dithered for too long. Our beloved club has been run by a bunch of incompetents for too long. We’ve had to swallow this nonsense for far too long.

The silence from the club is ear shattering. We deserve a statement of what went wrong. An open letter from BK or KW on the website is the least we deserve. Sadly although we need a creative midfield talent badly I can not see a suitable one being found in 4 days.

I was absolutely ecstatic last week and felt pride in our club that we were really stepping up to the proverbial plate with the expected signings of Yak & Fernandes. Now we haven’t got either. I was willing to stomach that rubbish on Saturday in the expectation it was the last time this season I would have to endure such an inept display devoid of any quality, cutting edge, flair or creativity. If our central midfield is to be shaped around Carsley and Neville this year we’re in for a long season.

One player does not make a team but it would’ve been a hell of a catalyst.

Explanation now! World class creative midfielder by Friday!

Fuck all chance of getting either!

I agree, why should he have any loyalty to us? If, on the other hand, he has made assurances and promises to EFC then he’s a bit of a toe rag.
On the way back from the match on saturday I jokingly said, ’hope Manny and Yakubu didnt see that display of hoofball or they’ll be high tailing it outa here’. Hmmmm, One down, one to go. I’m really peeded off about losing this player, whatever the reasons. I just loved watching him. These last 24 hours have been a pain, clinging onto a bit of hope that somehow BK would save the day (yes, I’m delusional and on medication for it).
Well, it’s not to be, no Manny and we just have to move on but I am still VERY pissed off that the OS has remained silent. They really do treat us with disdain at times.
Please God, not Cars and Pip in midfield though and no way should we now wait to see what’s available in January. Having said that if we can’t sort out a deal with a player in three weeks we ain’t gonna do it in four days! Sorry, all reads a bit disjointed but I’ve been at the medicinal brandy to drown my sorrows. Hic.

was it a typing error on SKY teletext? last night, it said Valencia had paid 60 million euros for FERNANDES in a buyout clause.does that let EVERTON off the hook?.

The real problem here is that this player isn’t just managed, but essentially ’owned’ by his agent, and they clearly want to keep hold of their investment.

Third party deals just aren’t going to be accepted by the premier league and I think our only way of buying him would have been an outright deal. is there any evidence global wanted that?

Having just read the official explanation, it would explain David Moyes reluctance to give any confirmation regarding transfers during his MOTD interview. He would have been aware of Manny’s offer from another club.
