Sound of silence

Just seen the picture of Manny holding his Valencia jersey - another kick in the guts. Its 2:50pm, the story broke yesterday evening, and so far not a word on the Official Site about the saga. Nothing short of pulling a world class midfielder out of the bag is gonna make me feel better about this farce, but it would be nice to be told about Everton's side of the story, wouldn't it?

notice that they haven’t updated the ’what the papers say’ section on the website as the papers would say that Fernandes is off to Valencia. Perhaps I’m naive but I think Fernandes conned us hence the utter silence from the club

Don’t blame Fernandes for this....blame the dickheads who took so long to get him signed up. Fernandes has got every right to talk to another club if we’re stupid enough to let him. Valencia took 24hrs to get him....we had all fucking summer.
Mark Pendleton
Posted 27/08/2007 at 15:03:24
Could it be perhaps the virtually proven English FA that could be to blame. We’re well aware that the Red$hite dictate their own rules - and by that i mean Mascherano and Tevez deals.
Andy
Posted 27/08/2007 at 15:02:45
the silence from everton is nothing new here, but what i will say is that they have messed up big time, they should have got fernandes to sign a pre contract to stop whats just happened, they’ve had all summer to get this wrapped up and when it looks like were about to sign him,BANG, he’s signed for someone else.
John Holmes
Posted 27/08/2007 at 15:08:33
I may be wrong but I believe Everton tried to put a first-option agreement in the initial loan but it was removed on the insistence of the FA to comply with their third-party rules.
As for the length of time it took, wasn’t the Tevez deal prolonged for virtually the whole summer?
Steve Mc
Posted 27/08/2007 at 15:14:27
John Holmes, yes the Tevez deal went on for ages but all the pitfalls for this type of deal were ironed out a few weeks ago so EFC should have found it easier to conclude as someone else had looked at the intricacies beforehand.

Another poster on here mentioned that the Dithering Dave tag was perhaps unfair as our failings and embarrassments in the windows could be attributed to Kenwright. Couldnt agree more mate! Fernandes can choose to sign for whatever club he wishes, I wouldve loved that to be us but I dont have any ill-will for him (course, if I was one of the people who got his autograph on Saturday I might feel differently). I just can shake the feeling that we’ve fucked this up all by ourselves. I dont agree with the theory that this was just a smokescreen for the Kirkby vote, but I have to admit that the silence from the club on this transfer is deafening.

Andy i could be wrong but Pre-contract agreements are for players who are coming to the end of their contract with one club and sign a pre-contract to sign with another club when their current one expires. That would not have been applicable in this case.
Nevertheless, Everton took forever to complete this deal so had nobody to blame but themselves.
Another thing - why do Everton just accept that the Yakubu appeal will be on Weds morning? Surely they can put some pressure on the powers that be to hear this straight away? If anything goes wrong it is then just two days to the close of the transfer window - not a hope in hell of us signing a big name striker in two days - not a hope in hell.

Dithering Dave strikes again. Sorry, but having watched Manny last year I not only believe he would have helped us today, but he would also be a more valuable asset in the future. Just like Arteta is today. Now we will probably bring in some stop gap midfielder in the mould of Van de Mede. Heres hoping I am wrong, but yet again, so disappointed!!

Not that I am one to stand up for the board or for moyes without question, but why is the finger of blame so firmly pointed at them?
It seems to me that the Premier League took thier time with "paperwork" (sure that wouldnt happen for "rs") and the complication of third party took its toll.
I can imagine that his part owners have been given a better deal at valencia (spanish leagues dont have a problem with part ownership) and they can make money on the deal and retain ownership of a valuable comodity that will no doubt increase in value in the future.
I dont know what the lad is like, but he did nothing significant to suggest to me that he was going to be a blue through and through. Perhaps another mercenary? Who knows?????
Wish we had him but if he doesnt want to play for the club then he shouldnt be here. Gutted but this is 21st century football. MONEY MONEY MONEY!!!!

well lets play the numbers game.
40 % of fans are against moving to kirkby and i think its fair to say are not happy with kenwright.
that leaves 60 %.
then a day after the vote , its anounced yakubu is not eligable for a permit (pending appeal) and the day after that fernandes is signed by valencia ~(and the club , after 24 hours of the news breaking , still havn’t addressed the fans).
what persentage of the 60 % do you think are not happy with kenwright now ?
this club is being ripped apart !
well done kenwright you horses arse !

id put money on the vote being a majority no vote after these last couple of days, i have lost complete trust in our board, people may disagree with me but its my personal opinion and people can agree or disagree with me, not signing fernandes has angered more than anything.

Your rite Andy - there is no such thing as a straightforward transfer when the Everton amatuers are involved. So four days to go until the transfer window closes begs the question - Even if we did identify a suitable replacement for Fernandes would EFC be able to complete a deal in 4 days??? Form would suggest that NO is that answer to that
Andy
Posted 27/08/2007 at 15:45:18
seamus the chances of signing a player in 4 days is extremely unlikely as our medicals take about 4 days, even if we do sign someone they will not even come close to the ability fernandes has, no doubt we’ll be linked with the usual shite like kenny miller, darren fletcher etc, etc.
James Elworthy
Posted 27/08/2007 at 16:22:28
The deal to sign Fernandes was held up probably because of the fact Everton were prepared to pay Benfica 6m for Fernandes and not the company who own 50% of him a further 6m. As the club couldnt come to an agreement we were told it was the FA to blame. If Everton bought him out from his 2 owners there would not be a problem as we would have paid for him 100%.
Having said that I dont think Fernandes is worth 12m or even close to that figure so if we are spending that sort of money certainly Manny wouldnt be the player to sign. I think he is worth 4-5m at the most.
My biggest gripe is the silence from the club over the matter, the way the fans are shit on is a disgrace. Dare I say it but Liverpool just seem to sign players no hitch no hiccup whatsover. We seem to have the longest medical in the game as if we hope the player fails it.
The silence is deafening from the club even now hours after he has signed for Valencia. we havent made a comment. I now think this was a conspiracy theory to get the Kirkby vote through. Kenwright and his technicolour haze of misinformation or no information borders on disgraceful. He needs to sell up now and go back to producing theatre productions. The Kenwright out campaign must gather momentum after this.
Andy

if fernandes is only worth 4-5m then why have valencia stuck a 60m euro get out clause on his head, he was definately worth £12m and its a shame he aint gonna be playing for us.

A few things:
1) Gutted about Fernandes but the speed of the move to Valencia clearly shows his heart was never fully here. Looking for a bright side and I think this could be it.
2) The club MUST come out in the week and let us know why this deal fell through. Was it because of the FA? Was it because of Manny’s last minute change of heart? Or was it because they dithered? Either way, the board have to understand that we need to know why this fell through.
3) We still have Cahill to come back and Jagielka to build on his performance from the weekend. Thus, I don’t think we’re looking at a Neville/Carsley midfield all season as many of the doom-mongers are saying. There’s Pienaar still to come as well.
4) List of players I’d like us to look at now:
Luka Modric
Tommy Gravesen (if he’s less than £1 million)
Yohan Gourcuff
Mark Noble
Diego
Juan Riquelme (at a push but with his age and his tendency to go missing, I’d be a little wary)
The important thing is not to rush into anything. I know there are only 4 days left until the end of the window but a new one opens in January. Cahill, Pienaar, Jagielka, Osman, Mc Fadden (and dare I say it...) Van Der Meyde can see us through until then and we could look to spend big in January. I’d hate to see us spend money we can ill-afford to throw away in a mad panic. Could Kissock come in and do a job possibly? There’s Da Silva who could always be recalled too.
Come what may though, we MUST get behind the lads and Davey Moyes as the things that are happening off the pitch are not their fault.

If the yak falls thourgh and Johnson were to sufer a injury I fear for are place in this division. Carsley and Neville are by far the weakest central midfield in the prem, lets see how many players want to sign in jan when were out of europe and both cups. Everton have let me down once again.

I wouldnt slag off our medical procedure or the time it takes - if it wasnt as stringent as it is we would have signed shite like Forsell and Davis (god knows how VDM got in though). Regarding Fernandes, if he wanted to be a blue he would have waited. I get the feeling he is the type of player who would have agitated for a move as soon as there was a bit of interest in him

David - Neville and Carsley will not be the first choice midfield pairing after Saturday, even if we don’t bring anyone in. Jags will come in for one of them and it wouldn’t suprise me if we saw Arteta move in field to allow Pienaar to come in. Cahill is still to come back as well...

Can anyone remember why Pompey didnt want him before he came to us on loan?
Was it just the price tag?
I seem to remember there being some sort of question about attitude or unsettling the dressing room.
Anyone any ideas? May just be my imagination.
Wish he had become a blue though. He looked like the missing link for our midfield.
I now worry about the burden of expectation on Micky as our only real creative player.

The jag is a d/m anway all the same to me, arteta has impressed on the wings and is to light weight for a central midfield player. Cahill will will make a difference to the side we need a midfield player before the yak, we have been trying to sign one for years sisko, davis, neville was singed to play there that went well didnt it!(he should only play r/b & 3.5 mill you could of get a better r/b) why hasn?t the jag started so far this season as a first choice d/m we spent 40% of transfer money on him this window and he hasnt started a game shocking. We needed a striker and a midfielde more than anything and we get a d/m, left back and lmd if we start are first uefa cup game with neville and carsley in midfield I believe we will get knocked out in the first round and as I said who we will attract in jan as a bottom half side with no europe. I think we should surrender are place in europe to save being embrrassed again.

saying we surrender our uefa cup place is the most outrageous thing i have ever heard. some of the comments today are shocking such as neville/Carsley being the worst central midfield in the league, they wernt when we beat spurs away 3-1. we are the most reactionary fans around always looking for the worst in whatever is going on at the club, maybe just for once the club hasnt done anything wrong maybe they have what you can be sure about is the rantings of everton fans and conspiracy theories, like everyone else i am frustrated we arnt signing manny but its not BK’s fault or Moyes or even the FA simply Valencia made an offer that was better to Manny he took it. Nobody outside of an everton fan would choose us over Valencia. we are 5th with a squad that is better than last year we will sign Yakubu on wednesday its not great but its a lot better than some people are trying to paint it.

Gareth Oughton - Not trying to run you down because most of what you say is put very well but January is too late. We could be out of everything by then. We should be looking to push on now and not just consolidate and make do until January.
Dont you remember what happened the last time we qualified for Europe?? No big signings when we had the chance and by the time January came around we almost bottom of the table and out of europe embarrasingly - no big player would touch us with a barge pole once January came. We missed our chance, didnt try to push on and got seriously punished.
If we fail to bring in a top class midfielder this time then we seriously run the risk of doing the same again. Granted we probably have a better squad than we did then but we cant just be content with "making do till January". I seriously hoped that type of attitude was behind us (no offence).
Come on Blues - demand more - Time to push on.

now that manny as gone to Spain what now for Everton, who will come in and play the creative role within the midfield we dont have alot of time left in the transfare window to buy someone, its left us up the creek without paddle. i cant see that many players with class were looking for, we cant go backwards and buy some as-been, as anybody got any thoughts who will come in within the next few days.
Gareth Oughton
Posted 27/08/2007 at 18:55:49
Seamus - No offence taken whatsoever mate and I do see where you’re coming from about the need to act decisively.
The thing for me is not to act decisivley without acting rashly. Rash action would be going out and splurging £6 or £7 million on a midfielder who Moyes and Irvine haven’t done their homework on. I know it is frustrating thinking about waiting until January but we’re not in a position to spend now, regret later.
As you say, the squad is a lot stronger now than it has been for a very long time and will be strengthened further by Yakubu’s addition. Even though the 04/05 squad got us into 4th place, this squad is definitely much stronger and better equipped to deal with Europe. We’re on the cusp of turning into a team that is no longer ’punching above our weight’ and I feel that our midfield would just see us through until January. Jags, Cahill, Arteta and Pienaar is not the terrible midfield that people are keep talking about.
Obviously if the right player is available at the right price in the next couple of days though, we should definitely act. But only if the homework has been done and we’re not held to ransom over the price.

Gareth Oughton, not being funny mate, but after the Reading game, who would have thought that Carsley and Neville would have been the center mid pairing for Blackburn? The only way that pairing will change for this weekends game, is if Carsley can’t shake off his injury. If he can,I bet you it will be more of the same 2, in the middle.

I don’t really believe we should give up are place in europe, I am just really disapointed that another summer has passed us by and we have failed to build on past success’s. Many people have said all summer that is a repeat of the season we finshed 4th.The
midfield minus ferandes is weaker.
We have had all summer to strengthen and failed to do so, I fear jan will be to late to attract the type of player we need and deserve. We do have a stronger squad than when we finshed 4th which is irrelevant now because eveyone else has a stronger squad too. In this league
you don’t get many chances to move forward, at most we have had three in last 15 years and to me we have blown it again.

And as I thought, its a deal which both gives more to benfica, and keeps the third party on board.
Is Fernandes worth 10 million to Benfica and whatever to the agent/owner?
I don’t think so.
Simply, no more third party deals. The Premier League doesn’t like them and it seems to inflate prices even more than usual
