End of the world

I would implore everyone as Everton football supporters to keep their calm about the Manuel Fernandes business. I am no official mouth piece for the administration. On the contrary I was gutted to read the news myself. The fault does lies with someone, however we hardly know who that someone actually is (and I doubt that we ever will).

I remember a similar outcry at the time Wayne Rooney was sold. But what happened eventually ? We survived that season, and we WILL survive this. At the end of the day football is a TEAM game and while Manny would have enhanced the team, his absence certainly does not destroy it.

In fact, before January last year, I didn't even know about Manny's existence. He can go to Valencia and and play for the perennially underachieving Valencia side; I for one don't want unprofessional and unreliable people like him in our squad.

One thing I do know is that Moyes will find someone else eventually, he always does. Until then, we still have Baines, Pienaar and Jagielka to look forward to.

I'm sorry, Nigel, but it's that kind of make-do attitude where you're prepared to sit through season after season with a threadbare squad that is ill-equipped to challenge in Europe when it gets there that just lets the custodians of our club off the hook. We don't need to "survive" this season ? we need to finally push on and stop "punching above our weight" but competing a more level playing field in the top 6.

It is a well-established tactic of the current regime to sign players late in the summer so that, to quote an Everton official, they're not paid for "sitting on a beach." That, of course, leaves you little room to maneouvre when your prized signings fall through less than a week before the transfer deadline closes.

And if what we're told is correct, that same tactic ? or the chronic lack of cash so mysteriously and conveniently resolved a fortnight ago ? recently nearly lost "Blue Bill" his best asset as well, his manager. How might the "vote for Kirkby/vote of confidence" have gone then?

Lyndon - "well-established tactic to sign players late in the summer". Like Johnson, Lescott and Howard last year then? I wish you guys would actually pay attention to facts for a change and stop making things up to suit your particular agenda. My God, there’s a lot to criticise without making shit up.

Lyndon,

I hear where you are coming from. I totally agree that we need a larger squad however the addition of just one Manuel Fernandes was never going to address this issue. ’Maybe’ signing Fernandes a bit earlier might have been better. Again, who knows ?

What I do know is that we DID sign a few players relatively early in the piece. Leighton Baines for me is the ’star signing’ this season. Although I do find the magical appearance of 23 million pounds for player signing in the last 2-3 weeks of the transfer window, a bit suspicious. But then again maybe the money was always there, we were just never told about it.

We can find several promising midfielders for 10 million pounds. If one cant be found in the next 4 days (the odds do not look good),then we should wait and add to the squad slowly but surely. Like we have done so successfully in the past few years.

Neil, last year was the exception to the rule. I reckon Lyndon has banged this one squarely on the head.

It really doesn’t matter whether Fernandes would have been the world-beater we all hoped he would have been. The fact of the matter is that he emerged as one of our main targets, one for the future, our bit of quicksilver. Now, for one reason or another(doesn’t matter whose fault it is) he’s not arriving. How sad is that? Nobody nabbed Mascherano from the RS despite there being all sorts of issues round his registration. What about Tevez? His transfer saga to Utd was protracted but noone gazumped them.

This ranks alongside the "we’re signing Muller" scenes in 1994.

If Manny is gone, so be it. Let’s get over this Manny affair and now hope that Moyes and the club gets the real MEN before the transfer deadline. All we fans can do is to get our act together behind Moyes and the club. We do not know where went wrong exactly, but I am sure something has been learnt from this episode. Let’s move on! Don’t let this issue break our stride!

Sorry, Neil, you can make accusations of making things up all you like but, as Harvey says, last season was the exception to a well-worn rule. I don’t make stuff up to suit an agenda, Neil. My agenda is wanting the best from Everton FC and if that means pointing out a few home truths along the way then so be it.

The constant barrage of "you’re so negative, you’re so anti-Board," etc doesn’t bother me anymore because eventually it all comes out in the wash and most of the time what we’ve been whining on about actually turns out to be true.

The Fortress Sports Fund fiasco was a prime example. We were reamed over our scepticism of that whole charade — indeed, that was the incident where we earned our "negativity stripes" from the BlueKipper brigade.

So crack on if you think we’re lying through some anti-Board agenda but on this particular issue, I’ve seen the e-mail that backs up the "tactic" in question.

You’re missing the point. No one is worried about Fernandes’s not signing destroying the team and causing us to become absolute shite. What we’re all worried about is the fact that HAD he signed, with the prospect of Yakubu as well, we were all very optimistically looking at a side and a squad of true quality. But we have now missed that opportunity and have only 4 days to avoid another season of being distinctly unexciting and average.

Everton Football Club had Fernandes on loan at the end of the season. They let him go home without making a bid. The reason we never made a bid is because, we are led to believe, that we did not have the money at that time to make an offer for his services and we seem to have been wary of the joint ownership issue.

Just over three weeks ago money seemed to have become available, not just enough to buy Fernandes but a further 12 million for Yakubu and all of a sudden Everton were again interested in signing Fernandes; in fact on at least two occasions we?ve been informed that the imminent signing was ?24 hours away?.

The player spent the greater part of last week at Goodison and then all of a sudden less than 24 hours after our last game and 48 hours after the yes voters sold our heritage/assured our future, Fernandes has been tapped up, agreed personal terms, had a medical and been signed.

I?ve got four questions:

1. Why wasn?t he signed in May?
2. Why wasn?t he signed in June?
3. Why wasn?t he signed in July?
4. Why wasn?t he signed in August?

It took Valencia less than 24 hours?

Either we had no intentions of signing him or someone has fucked up badly.

Yakubu?.... I?m not holding my breath.

Spot on Lyndon!..I think neil needs to go and start up the bill kenwright/keith wyness fanclub. One summer we have brought in players early in the last 8 years, coincidence that we got into euroope at the end of it? keep making excuses for the gobshites who run my club neil!

Valencia are a big team, (not perennial underachievers, Nigel, unless 2 league titles, 2 CL Finals, 1 uEFA cup in last 7 years is underachievement), so in a way I can undersatnd this especially if there were problems finalising the deal. Without a doubt the agent has driven this; I think the player has very little say in this.

Sorry I irritate you dingleblue (name?), but I am only pointing out facts. If they don’t fit your preconceived story about BK / KW that’s a shame.

By the way, you obviously haven’t been listening to my views very well, since I have been critical of both BK (saying that he needed to go because he wasn’t rich enough for a modern Premiership club), and KW (over his stupid ’no plan B’ comment). So I am in no way part of any BK/KW fanclub.

What I am trying to do is point out when we seem to move into a parallel X Files universe in which people are not letting basic facts (e.g. Fernandes was with us the past week, we did submit papers to the FA, we couldn’t have signed him on a pre-contract) get in the way of a good negative story.

You guys don’t seem to be able to make your minds up whether BK is an Incompetent Clown (couldn’t walk a dog, acoording to Tony M), or a Master Manipulator (able to get half the world to fit in with his pro-YES vote Fernandes charade). It can’t really be both, can it?

I cannot believe the happy-go-lucky attitude of this article.

Maybe you haven’t been watching our lack of creativity, hoofball, boring, predictable, inept tactics so far this season, but I believed that their was hope from a player who ticked all the right boxes.

I am totally let down (again) by our club. Manny was the only player most of us wanted all season, and we couldn’t even do that. If the RS had signed Arteta would that be an ’oh well’ situation as well.

And one more thing... if the club did not know about Manny, how comes my work-mates (Valencia & Benfica supporters) knew about it on friday night!

Sorry Nigel but I have to agree with Lyndon, think he has it spot on. I think we have all been taken for mugs coming up to the vote. The thing that really fucks me off is that no offical line has came from the club.

neil..all about the facts! You talk about facts but you appear to manipulate them. You highlight lescott etc as early signings, even though you are well aware this is an exception for EFC. You know a lot of ’facts’ about the fernandes signing even though most of us are just baffled by it because no other information has come out other than he was due to sign in 24 hours - twice! Regarding kenwright, i tend to agree with you i am not sure if he is a dimwit or a master of deciet...do you? by the way thats why i said no to kirkby..i just didnt know the facts!!

Neil Pearse
15   Posted 27/08/2007 at 17:18:55

Fair enough, dingleblue, but on Fernandes the ’facts’ I know are mainly what have been evidenced on this site (e.g. Fernandes was at the game on Saturday etc.), and that he’s gone to Valencia for more money than we offered for him, and leaving his part-owners having 50% and a share of sell-on.

I don’t think those facts fit with the idea that BK went through a charade to get a YES vote.

On last year as an "exception" on late transfers, well if you say "all swans are white", and then you find a black one, then your first statement was wrong wasn’t it? And we signed Jagielka and Baines well before the deadline this year too. So maybe we used to sign players late, but are now getting better? Fits the facts better than what Lyndon originally said.

16   Posted 27/08/2007 at 17:26:10

Said something very similar on another thread in the mailbag but for me, the important thing is not to rush into anything. I know there are only 4 days left until the end of the window but a new one opens in January. Cahill, Pienaar, Jagielka, Osman, Mc Fadden (and dare I say it...) Van Der Meyde can see us through until then if need be and we could look to spend big in January. I?d hate to see us spend money we can ill-afford to throw away in a mad panic. Could Kissock come in and do a job possibly? There?s Da Silva who could always be recalled too.

The speed at which Manny changed his mind clearly shows me he didn’t want to be here so maybe it isn’t the end of the world that he isn’t coming.

Finally, we have to get behind Moyes and the team as whatever’s happening off the pitch isn’t their fault.
Gareth Oughton
17   Posted 27/08/2007 at 17:29:29

Btw, here’s how I see the team shaping up in the interim until Cahill is back:

Howard, Neville, Yobo, Lescott, Baines, Pienaar, Jagielka, Arteta, Osman, Yakubu, Johnson

When Cahill’s back:

Howard, Neville, Yobo, Lescott, Baines, Pienaar, Jagielka, Cahill, Arteta, Yakubu, Johnson

Providing we don’t get too many injuries, we’ll be knocking in and around the top 8. Then, with Vaughan to come back and a new midfielder in January, we can push on further.

I genuinely don’t understand what the massive fuss is about with Fernandes. He looked a good prospect to be sure and would have been possibly a great signing, but at the end of the day he wasn’t exactly the messiah was he and this is precisely the sort of thing that happens to ALL major clubs when perusing eagerly sought after players.
Man Utd didn’t get their Malouda, Bale, Ballack or Mikel, Liverpool didn’t get Heinze, Spurs couldn’t snag Petrov, Real and AC didn’t get Ronaldinho or Henry, even megabucks Chelsea fail on occasion. It’s the name of the game. We’ve snapped up Johnson and Baines from under the noses of others and seem to have done the same with the Yak.

Quite frankly I don’t know if Fernandes’ heart was in it anyway (he’d been quoted various times saying he didn’t want to come back to England) and he seems to have leapt at the chance to play for another club. I’m sure his wage demands were massive too and as for the whole murky mess of part ownership I think we’re well clear of that.

Yes I’d love to see another midfield signing, particularly a creative one but to be honest if it stays where it is I’m more than happy with Baines, Jagielka, Pienaar and the Yak plus a couple of youth options and a back-up keeper. Four solid signings should be more than enough for one summer if you’re building, otherwise you face half the year trying to gel.

neil, i dont think it was a charade or smokescreen. my own opinion is that moyes told him to find more money or he was off. They found the money but fucked up the transfer (back to square 1).That simple. I dont really care about yakubu - im prepared to wait for vaughan, but i cannot watch many more games with neville and carsley in midfield. We all knew this in may, but had to listen to knobheads like prentice in the echo telling us to be patient, but we have been here before, many times. I really think the people who are currently supporting the board, including all things kirkby, are preventing any real progress. By the way, have u seen kenwright on the website speaking about kirkby? he knows all the facts, but it looks like he is desperately trying to convince himself it is the right thing. maybe he has been ’bullied’ by kw? I have never known evertonians to be so divided, despite relative success on the pitch, make no mistake we are in dark times. The board are responsibile for all of this. They should be making decisions, because if it does all go wrong, and i really pray it does not, they will blamne the fans for the decision. I hope 33,000 gates are not the first signs of total disillusion! thats my moan over, only meant to type 2 lines, anyway sorry for offence neil im just pissed off!

Whilst i would have been very pleased with the permanent signing of Manny it has to be said that he didn’t do a massive amount while on loan. I think it gives Pienaar an opportunity to come in and show what he’s made of. Other than that, you’d think Moyes would have a few other irons in the fire maybe.

Me too dingleblue, very pissed off, and no offence taken. I totally agree with you about Neville and Carsley - it’s going to do my head in if I have to see them playing in midfield together again. And I was surpised and disappointed by BK’s interview - if he really believes in Kirkby, he should have come out much more clearly and said it in my view. You many well be right about KW’s role here (he is certainly not coming out at all well from the last month’s shenannigans).

And I usually only intend to write two lines too! So I’ll stop now.

24   Posted 27/08/2007 at 18:17:52

I quite agree with what Chris says about Fernandes and transfers in general. Yes I too wanted us to sign him but the lad went missing too much to be a great player - but then he only played 9 games for us and you would have believed that Moyes would’ve knocked that part of his game into shape.

SKY’s comments from Fernandes make interesting reading, that he was shocked by the speed of the transfer - aren’t we all, add surprised to that as well. And for my two penneth worth add disgusted - if the lad trained with us last week and gave us his word he’d sign, well unless their has been a serious problem with the actual proposed transfer then, he’s not the kind of man I want playing for our club, however great he may one day be - this has tainted his character forever.

Neil/Dingleblue - we all set out to write a couple of lines and like so many others I too have failed - I guess we’re a passionate bunch, either that or we lack control !!!

Get one thing straight, there are two shithouses to blame for Fernandes not signing and they are Fernandes himself and his agent, who, because of the time scale involved in this case was obviously in negotiations with valencia while his toad of a client was snuggling up to B.K.and lying his head off.
Forget your conspiracy theories about the board or Wyness (I,ve never seen one proved yet)Vent your spleans on the the true villain of the piece said Mr Fernandes!Only a real out and out bastard would autograph shirts with his name printed on them and then do a runner.

Lifted from the Sporting Life website

disaapointed too but not much stick going round for fernandes on this issue.

yeh,he was potentially better than what we’ve got but the fact is he didn’t want to play for us.as soon as a so called bigger club came in for him he was gone.typical of todays footballers.

think about it.if he’d signed and was a success he’d be crying about wanting to play in the CL in 12 months time.if he was shite we’d be stuck with him for the next 5 years on mega bucks.people are too quick to hype him up.is he really that good ?

face facts, everton are not a very good team and we are not going to attract players over better sides.just cause arteta’s signed a new contract doesn’t mean he won’t fuck off when the so called big boys come in.

we should all be used to the modern footballers lack of respect these days.we have had enough instances these past few seasons.

let’s move on and talk about players who do want to play for us even if some aren’t the best.

Everyone keeps going on about Pienaar. Why the fuck doesn’t Moyes play him then? If our midfield would be so good with Arteta, Cahill, Jagielka and Pienaar, why the hell does Moyes play Jagielka as a substitute and keeps Pienaar on the bench? I’m hoping he’s unearthed a gem in Pienaar but I’m not thinking he’s the answer to our midfield problems otherwise Moyes would have him in the starting line-up. Or is our manager not that good?

Stop cryin about it lads! dont get me wrong i am annoyed that we didnt get him but its not like we hav sold a player we just havnt gained one! much rather have arteta than him any way!! Moyes WILL have a back up plan he nearly always does! just dont worry and wait till september first and then make a decision! But most of all get behind the players and the management and i hate 2 say it the board! this is going to be a good season! so look forward to it!!

Pienaar will not be put in straight away as that is not Moyes way.

He did the same with Lescott last season. I am not saying Pienaar will be as good I guess he will be okay but not special.

As I think you are aluding we need somone who can hold play up and spread the ball around. that is what we hoped Manny could do, we have missed out on that one for one reason or another.

Whan we get Tim back he will more than likely be straight in the taem as an attacking midfielder with Jags for me holding. If Arteta stays out on the wing we need someone on the opposite side.

Who then Osman or Pienaar would apear favourites but don’t excite me.

Pienaar will get his oppertunity and i hope he takes it as it will mean we have a balanced midfield barring injuries. Carsley or Neville Could make a five man midfield when needed.

To end it would be dangerous to put someone uproven in this league straight into the team without letting them get a feel for the pace.

I don’t think its because Moyes is not that good more likely careful.in fact too careful for some.

32   Posted 27/08/2007 at 19:25:51

It’s not the loss of Manny that’s the problem, since you can’t loose what you never had, it’s the consistant situation that the Blues seem to be the best foot shooters on football. If there is a club with a better record of shooting itself in the foot I pity their supporters as much as I sympathise with ours. Which club sells players before getting the replacements in? Which club lets players go leaving no time to get replacements in? Which club weakens it’s squad when they know there are extra games in the new season? Which club consistantly makes a mess of ticketing arrangements? Which club has no cover for it’s best player (Arteta)?

EVERTON

The Mangement should hold it’s head in shame and explain to the bewildered fans.

Did dithering do it? The Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia says that negotiations for Fernandes began Friday evening (after he was said to be an Everton player) and ended at 2.30 am Sunday. They also quote the price as between 12 and 15 million Euros. As much as this smacks of 'you can't trust anyone south of Calais,' it also indicates a certain amount of dithering on our part as it took less than two days for Valencia to make the deal and we have been twittering about it for weeks.

As I live in Ireland (even though I visit Goodison a number of times each season)I was not entitled to vote in the recent Kirby ground move. If i was I would have voted No. Why? Because I do nor trust Bullshit Billy. I have been telling my mates for the last two weeks or so that the Fernandes and Yakubu "signings" were a smokescreen to get the Kirby vote through.
I can remember a time when an Everton manager went out and signed a player in a day. No messing. Lately the deals seem to take forever. So much so the the world and his dog know about it. The Sissoko transfer?
What truly amazes me is that we continually accept the crap that BK and his cronies dole out to us.
They have managed the finances of our club at a time of unprecedented riches coming into the game, yet we always seem to be broke.
Some contributers have blamed Fernandes for the cock up which I think is unfair. It is two weeks since Manny was withdrawn from the Benfica squad to begin discussions with Everton, Valencia tied up the deal in two days. Which employer would you work for?
Friday midnight will come and DM will tell us that he is disappointed that he did not sign another midfielder but that he is happy with what he has got. Yeah, Neville and Carsley. Put away the passports folks it will be a short European campaign..... again.

For goodness sake - Valencia could tie up the deal in 2 days because third-party agreements and shared ownership are possible in Spain, and they aren’t here.

Simple as that.
