So the club have broken thier silence and, suprise, suprise, they have exonorated themselves from any blame. Its all down to Fernandes that this deal turned sour.

Well, I am sorry but I don't buy it. According to Kenwright, he shook hands with Manny on Saturday night to conclude the deal having got the clearance required??? How does that work then?Fernandes probably thought he was signing for us when he arrived back on Merseyside last week. Yet on Saturday night he is still shaking hands. Where was Fernandes supposed to go after Saturday nights handshake? What was he supposed to do when he got there? The lad was left in Limbo by Kenwright and the Everton board with only days before the transfer window closing not having put pen to paper and not knowing where he stood. Saturday night FFS. What were the club thinking?

That's how I see it anyway. Perhaps BK wanted Manny to bolt as part of the scam. Don't think Kenwright isn't capable of such thingss. The man is as slippery as eel in a vat of Swarfega and I wouldnt believe anything he says. It's no wonder Manny legged it. Why wasn't he signed up on the Friday or something legally binding done before or during negotiations? Never mind shaking fucking hands that late in the proceedings and thinking the job's done.

We knew the blame would be shifted but the excuse doesn't make any sense. The club are saying they got the clearance and it took them a week's work to do it so why the fuck didn't they get his signature? It stinks to high heaven.

By all accounts the Yakubu deal is a peice of piss and it's in the bag. That job's done as well. Well, I will wait untill tomorrow before I make any judgement on that score.

If this is how Kenwright & Co operate over the signing of one player, can you imagine the goings one when they try to build this new ground. What a fucking scream that's going to be. I can't wait. Don't imagine for one minute though that the finished product will even resemble what we have seen so far. I am waitng for the day when we hear the news that new plans have been submitted for the Kirkby arena for a smaller more affordable stadium. "A 55,000-seater was beyond our needs..." etc etc etc. That's if Kenwright doesn't piss off the Tesco's Team by then with his bullshit.

Well, with all our hopes and prayers dashed, this week we set off on the road for the glamour tie of the weekend at Bolton Wanderes. Moyes's Mighty Midgets will be in for another physical battle at the Greybok and defeat there will turn this season so far into a disaster. Let's hope that Yakubu signs up in time for the game [Deep Breath] because we need someone bigger than 5ft 6inch who can get on the end of those air bombs we fire at our forward line.

If the Yak deal fucks up then we can always ask Big Dunc to stand in. That would be good for a laugh. I mean things couldnt get any more farcical at the club ... could they?

There seems to be a lot of moaning all the time on here. What about maybe supporting the club and the manager. I am pretty sure that Moyes is doing his best to get signings that are right for the club and that the proposed move to a new ground is a good deal. Just look at where we were before Moyes joined!!

Come on now, lets support the club!! It's what supporters are supposed to do!

Ok I'm as annoyed as the next guy about missing out on Fernandes but it's time to look at the silver lining. If we hadn't tried to sign Fernandes, it may never have been public knowledge that we have that money to spend. However, now that it is, the club have no excuse not to allow Moyes to spend that on someone else (if he can find someone in the time). Mind you, I'd rather have Fernandes as opposed to the money.

ps: When we do sign Yakubu tomorrow will Tony Marsh be as silent as the OS was yesterday?

Why do people think no one should have a go if our club cock up or perform badly? This is an Everton discussion board and would be extremely boring if we all thought the sun shone out of BK n Busters arse and that the team was the greatest since Cattericks’. If I’m in the pub with gloating redshites I will defend the club with my dying death but on a website board amongst other blues surely we should be able to voice our dissatisfaction and discuss it properly. Surely even the most one eyed fan on here can see that the Fernandes affair has turned into an embarassing debacle? I dont consider myself a pessimist and before yesterday actually thought we would have a chance of challenging at the top this season barring key injuries, but I reserve the right to sound off when we blow an opportunity like Fernandes signing, Reading away, Spurs at home on the rack, etc.
I’ll support the team on the pitch and in the pub and there’ll never be a club to touch us as far as i’m concerned, but I’m not blind to our faults.

I think like every other Evertonian I have the right to be annoyed at Kenwrights latest gaff or to believe some con, personaly I think its a case of gross incompetence by our chairman, the trouble is with all the deceit he has dealt us in the past its his own fault if people are sceptical

If we signed Jesus Christ to our strikeforce in a megadeal, Tony Marsh would complain about both the price and that his height keeps him from being good enough in the air.

Had the argument with you yesterday over this Tony and I don’t think anything’s changed but glad to see you’ve dropped the self-agrandising and attacks on other people. Please continue to do so.

I don’t think anyone doubts we need more creative midfielders. Moyes has been trying for years to sign them and yet they’ve always god away. Usually because someone (Newcastle) have doubled the salary or transfer fee.

Also, I’ve been saying for a while we have two many lightweight players. Unfortunately two of those lightweights are key players (Johnson and Arteta). For me that suggests we can’t afford to carry Osman as a passenger in the physical games and unless McFadden beefs up a bit he’s in a similar vein. Hopefully Yakubu will offer a more physical presence. For me Jagielka offered more muscle and strong tackling but with greater composure on the ball than Neville or Carsley. I’d like to see him given a start in the midfield with Neville taking Hibbert’s place at full-back (assuming Carsley is fit).

Tony does have a point, if Everton were serious about the signing of Fernandes, the least the management are guilty of is gross incompetance. We had his agent’s phone number since January 2007 I take it???

...But, is it only me who reads Tony’s contributions in the voice of Zippy from Rainbow.

Try it... uncanny

Hopefully a last minute snag will scupper the Yakubu deal and Moyes will be forced to look for another striker, one whose not lazy and doesn’t waste chances.

Come on home office refuse that work permit and stop Moyes from making a mistake even I cant defend him from.

Fernandes shitted on us Tony, don’t try and defend him.

Where was he supposed to go after shaking hands on the deal on Saterday?

What sort of argument is that? If Fernandes really wanted to play for Everton he would have gone back to his hotel and started house hunting.

The Everton board may have been slow closing the deal but that doesn’t excuse the fact that what Fernandes did was shitty.

The club were still in talks with the premier league until Saturday morning.Fernandes was still sucking up to BK on Saturday afternoon .His agent meanwhile was in spain trying(successfully)to line his own pockets.Don,t think for one minute that Fernandes didn,t know what his handlers were doing. He,s a shit of the highest order and to lay any blame at the door of anyone at the club is misguided bitterness.I for one don,t know if B.K is as "slippery as an eel ina vat of swarfega" and to be honest I think it,s only conjecture on your part that he is.Personally I think he,s as honest as the day is long.Maybe misguided sometimes but certainly honest.

Tony - 100% right, Airbombs into our forwards - The giant AJ and Mc Faddedn. We really need the Yak in there quick or preferably start playing fucking football. Last Saturday was fucking embarrasing to watch.
Like have our players no brains (in particular TIM HOWARD, jesus man roll a ball to a fucking full back once in a while - preferably not Hibbert or Neville though cause they will just do the same thing), They must have launched 20-30 long high balls for AJ to try and win against Samba who is 6’5". That just defies logic.

It would make you stop going to Goodison. There are good players there who want to play football (see Baines interview after the match on evertontv) SO COME ON MOYES LET THEM PLAY FOR EVERYONES SANITY.

Fernandes shafted us, no doubt about it, but I still think that the club cant wash its hands of this completely. The situation of Valencia coming in with a rival bid, which they’re entitled to do, should never have arisen - Manny shouldve been signed up in some form of contract before the Reading game. Leave the major paperwork for the FA but get the lad signed to some agreement that he’s ours as long as the FA approve. I’m not a legal eagle but I’m sure such a document could’ve been prepared. At best, Kenwright shot us in the foot by vocalising the transfer of Fernandes way too early possibly to drum up goodwill towards the vote. At worst, well its anywhere between us being run by complete incompetent muppets, and what Tony describes.

I think it?s fair to criticise the club over the Fernandes fiasco but it is nonsense to suggest Kenwright wanted this transfer to fall through. We needed a creative midfielder and that situation has not changed!!!

The deal fell through because Everton tried to pay as little of the fee up front as possible which meant there were still ownership implications that had to be resolved with the FA before it could be completed. Yes it was a massive mistake by the board not to have bought Fernandes outright from the word go but that mistake was done out of a desire to get the best deal for Everton football club, nothing more sinister than that.

I think that the club statement on what happened was an insult to our intelligence but you have to expect the official website to try and put a positive spin on things otherwise it would not be doing its job properly. I just hope that the club has learnt from all this and doesn?t balls up their next attempt at bringing in someone else.

EFC’s hands were tied on getting Fernandes to sign a legally binding document without the league’s approval, without which no player can be registered to play. Nothing is binding until signed by all parties and one of the Conditions Precedent necessary for the deal to be completed would be ’approval from the Premier League’. Any other document Fernandes would have signed in connection with the transfer would have been construed as an ’agreement to agree’ which is unenforceable under English contract law.

EFC have been undone by a combination of (i) potential dithering over securing Manny’s signature at the beginning of the transfer window (but funds may not then have been available); (ii) the over-zealous approach to third-party arrangements taken by the Premier League in the wake of Tevez; (iii) the complete lack of financial governance in the Spanish game (in the long run the EPL’s stance will prove wise); (iv) the avarice of the player and/or his agents (although I very much doubt Valencia were able to match what we could pay him, La Liga just isn’t awash with anything like the amounts of money over here); and (v) the simple fact that for any overseas player, particularly one from Iberia, Valencia is a far better destination than Everton.

24   Posted 28/08/2007 at 15:47:05

It crossed my mind. We’ll thank BK one day for what he has done for this club, when history allows us to look pack on the period in general without focussing on all the details. I fundamentally agree that the club has been mismanaged (behind the scenes, not by Moyes) and that much of club’s recent success has been in spite of, not because of, BK’s decision-making. However, Tony, while often infuriated (nee appalled) by some of our football under Moyes, I believe he deserves as many years as he can hack to try and deliver good times.

Although I don’t normally agree with you Tony, I read this article in full agreement (laughing out loud to your "The man is as slippery as an eel in a vat of Swarfega" simile in the middle of a dead quiet office!), and was to say the least suprised when I got to the bottom and realised it was written by your good self.

The offical "excuse" just doesn’t cut it with me, especially since we could have done this months ago, or got a legally binding pre-contract written up during last week. I dont think Bill is that devious, more totally naive and unsuited to running this great club. Sad to say it as he is a true blue i’m sure but give me a hard nosed businessman in the hot seat any day of the week (just need to find one though hey!).

Keep up the good work Tony.

Thanks Matt for pointing out the legalities here. It is getting extremely boring to keep reading ’we ought to have got him to sign a legally binding contract’, when obviously this was not possible. The Premier League hadn’t yet delivered their verdict. And how could we get a pre-contract with him if his 50% owners wouldn’t sign it? Which obviously they wouldn’t, given they were in the process of selling him to Valencia.

But, hey, why let the facts get in the way of a good anti-Kenwright story?

Do agree with the hoofball being shite on saturday..No matter how much Moyes screamed at Hibbert to play it on the deck...

The rest of your post Tony..pure drivel and fantasy, the normal rubbish..without the personal attacks on other evertonians that you normally throw in..

The legalities stopped him signing before Today...The player and his agents greed stopped him signing at all..end of..no conspiracy..just good old fashioned greed and a lack of the decency to even tell the club,
signing shirts and autograph books in the players lounge after the game..then doing a runner..

Dave Wilson we didnt have 3 months to sign Fernandes. Don’t forget Moyes no1 transfer target was Gonzales.

Moyes spent most of the summer trying to sign Gonzales and only settled on Fernandes when he admitted defeat in getting Gonzales.

Fernandes could have been signed 3 months ago but Moyes clearly thought he could do better.

It was probably only a few weeks ago that Moyes told Kenwright he would settle for Fernandes.

33   Posted 28/08/2007 at 20:57:25

Its quite simple Dave.

Conversation in May:

BK: So do we want to sign Fernandes permanently?

DM: No I think for that sort of money we can do better.

After a couple of months chasing Gonzales and other targets Moyes and Kenwright admit defeat in attracting better players and decide that although overpriced Fernandes is probably the best they can do this summer.

If anyone is to blame its Moyes ambition for thinking he could do better. Probably Kenwright would have signed Fernandes in May but Moyes clearly wanted a better player and only settled on Fernandes recently.

check when we dropped interest in Gonzales, or when we realised he wasnt coming. We were actually making formal inquiries about Manny months ago, we had him here for months, now after a six month look at him dont you think DM should have been able to decide, you either want the guy or you dont, if you cant decide then you risk looking foolish. BK thought he would deliver him right on cue for the vote, it blew up in his face, thats all
