Great signing, the one we've been waiting for all summer. Good pedigree and if he gets his hunger back, he will give most defenders in the league a game. One point, though (sorry to piss on the parade)....
He's not going to score any goals unless we create something for him. Firing 6ft balls up to him or blasting it in to his chest with his back to goal will have the exact same result its having now. Shit to watch and little in creativity.
Let's hope Moyes and some of the bigger culprits (Neville, Hibbert, Stubbs etc), dont just rely on his pace and carry on with the ineffective plan we're on now. Wishful thinking, eh...

It's a very real issue, Carl, even if it is one that some of our fans want us to ignore, so that we focus only on the great glory and fantastic success David Moyes and Bill Keenwright have brought us. It was good to read the intelligent observation of Mike Williams on this problem, which continues to plague Everton, the team on the field, and makes watching us such an acute embarrassment.

It does appear that one thing that unites ALL posters on Toffeeweb is the need for more "craft" in midfield. It seems that Moyes agrees too, and was trying to do something about it with Fernandes. Let’s hope he still manages to get someone in.
Stephen Appiah is class and would be wonderful. Surely he would prefer us to the train wreck which is West Ham United? (I guess the real question, sadly, is: what does his agent think?)

I’m very happy with the signing of Yakubu and I think he could be the strike partner Johnson and Everton have been waiting for. However, I’d have to agree with the comments about the long ball football. There is too much pressure on Arteta to provide the creativity, with another player playing with him with a bit of class and the ability to do the unexpected we would have a lot more options regarding our style of play.
I’m really disappointed to lose out on Fernandes as I think he was that player. However, we need to move forward and hearing Appiah’s name is a positive sign. I’d like to see us get Emana from Toulouse, he wouldn’t be too expensive and he has a lot of class.

All this talk of Appiah, We’ll probably just end up with Vogel!!

Plus Johnson always works well when he has someone to play off, just look at the Blackburn debacle, when Anachebe came on Johnson looked a different player.
We need a good left sided player, I would of loved us to get Downing as he is quality at this level, (not so sure at International though), but that will never hapen as Southgate would be run out of boro if he sold him.
Maybe move Macfadden to left wing, as he is fast, got good touch, he just needs to learn how to cross a ball.
I would drop Hibbo for Nev as Hibbo is just to wastefull at this level, and have Jaggs in the middle with Osman with either Pinnar and Arteta or Macfadden and Artetta in midfield with Yak and Johnson upfront.

£11.25m is at least £4m too much for Yakubu. For those who say tihs doesn’t matter need to understand that this is £4m less to spend on a creative midfield player.

This problem has to be down to moyes he gives the instructions.
I am dreading the prospect of neville and carsley in the midfield all season, one of them has to make way.
Maybe moyes should speak to mark hughes about playing football on the deck.

Seems like we’re interested in signing Appiah? But tonight his team, Fenerbache, is playing against Anderlecht, isnt it? Does it makes him ineligible for Euro competition if he sign for us after playing for Fenerbache?

"I chose to go to Middlesbrough because they were in Europe. At the moment they are not doing it."
Pressure's on, Mr Moyes. Get us into Europe again this year or Yak will be off!

We do need someone who can create in midfield however with regards to this we also need someone to link the midfield with defence.
At times the defence have very few if any options open to them and revert to hoof ball. As some of them naming no names apear to find it difficult to make a pass at the best of times for me this is another important issue to address. Maybe Jags can do this but only if he is given a chance.
Regards Yakubu beinfg to expensive Bent 16 million Torres 26 it would apear this is now the going rate. We are just going to have to get use to it.

With regards to the playing style comment it is a shame because we can play it about and pass teams out of the game, but only do it every now and again. Its not that we don’t have the ability...

Wonder will Moysey leave Yak on the bench next Saturday like he usually does with his new signings?

Appiah would be class for us,personally I would prefer us to sign a wide man and shift Arteta into the middle! Think he would choose us over West Ham if its down to footballing reasons and by that I mean if he ever wants to play again,Dyer,Faubert and Parker have all gone there and they are out for months now (I even heard Parker may be finished)! The place is jinxed!!

Pienaar is a wide man isn’t he? He should be on the right with Arteta in the middle, this leaves the only gaping hole as a genuine left sided player who can create, sign one and we’ve got a good squad.
By the way, I’d have signed Vogel up ages ago, even for £1M, we’ve no-one better at playing the holding role, at least for European games. Neville should always be at right-back, that’s his position.

That is exactly why I am so disapointed to lose out on Fernandes. He wouldn’t have solved all our problems but would have gone some way in alleviating them.
Our problem i so glaring that I found myself envious of Liverpool (frankly rudimentary) passing and movement against Toulouse yesterday especially in restropect of the agony we were subjected to for a good 70 minutes on Saturday.
This CM position is crucial, even though I understand why people see bringing in a CM a neccesity but I really hope Moyes is able to bring in the right prescription to our seemingly chronic problem. I’d rather get in the right player(albeit not in this transfer Window) than splash 5-12 million on the wrong player(perscription) that will only be detrimental to our progress in the long run.

Before anyone jumps the gun about Appiah not being in the Fenerbahce squad for their game (i.e. me); he’s injured.

a bit worried about the price tag of the yak i must be honest but think its great that we can compete at such high prices for me it shows how much we have progressed in the last few years so lets hope this is a good buy for the blues and may he bring us many goals against red teams and the likes......

i too was a bit concerned at the price tag, but having seen todays transfer prices of Kenwyn Jones & Nathen Ellington. 11 million is not too bad

Has Appiah played for Fenerbahce in Europe tonight because if he has then he will be cup tied. We are already losing 4 players to the African Nations Cup is it wise to sign a 5th player from there. That is of course if Yakubu goes back to play for Nigeria again.

James that point has been covered on a couple of threads. He is out with a long term injury. He has not played since last season.
The second point re losing 5 players is spot on this is something that I have considered as well and could be an issue..

I’d rather lose Appiah for a month, than spend the whole season watching Neville & Carsley playing the ball sideways, backwards or 50 ft high.
Off topic - but why is it that 35,000 Evertonians can see Hibberts shortcomings i.e. his complete lack of footballing ability - WITH THE BALL & the fact that this season he’s having a mare - but what’s the odds he plays on Saturday??? Mistifying - I call it Davie Weir syndrome

Just thought i would mention that!
He Could have had it all!

In Liverpool today ’tying up some loose ends’, Mark Chester. He’ll be in the squad on Sunday. He might crash and burn and we can pick him up in a year or two for sensible money... now I’m being silly!

I think Yak is a fantastic signing and *could* develop into a lethal front line.
Now he has been called up to South Africa, will be go missing in January?
At £11m i dont think he will be on the bench come the weekend..
Yak for £11m or Bent for £16m?
I think we got the better deal.

Been on the sauce, have we Martin Roberts? That’s a day The Yak will never forget.... handed the famous number 9 shirt at Goodison AND called up by South Africa!!!! No wonder he told the Nigerian FA to stick it where the sun don’t shine!!
You are right on one thing though: No more Africans. What with Yobo, Anichebe, Pienaar and possibly Yakubu added to Phileas Fogg Cahill jetting round the world at the drop of a hat, we don’t need to lose any more of our squad in the middle of the season.

Jeez, imagine what impact a Kanchelskis type winger would add to our side now. We’d be cooking on gas. What about this Van der Vaart dude, come on lets pull out all the stops!!!

I agree with Dan and Mike on this one.. Arteta in the middle and Piennar wide right would be awesome.. but personally I would rather buy a winger to replace Osman.. yeah he’s a good squad player but too inconsistent.. I gotta admit.. on his day.. he’s England standard though.. jus doesnt play like that often enough

Great to see the news about signing Yak. More important than the player himself is the fact that the Board made the cash available. Hopefully this will restore a lot of confidence and positive attitude in the many fans who have been so critical over the past few months (maybe years). Personally, I have a good feeling that Yak and JB will combine really well.
Just a note. It was great to see the way Bainesee fitted in. Looked like he was born in the team. His overlapping runs and sharp crosses will be a great addition. Good move Davey!

Couple of comments about some of the above posts. "Mcfadden down the left because hes quick" your having a proper laugh. "Piennar wide right would be awesome" (Ben Jones above) how do you know, we have not seen feck all of him yet, he may end up being shit and from the little I have seen I do not hink he will be able to cope because he is just too small.
