Second-Best Nugent

Comments (22)

Harry Redknapp has admitted that he would allow David Nugent to leave Portsmouth just a month or so after signing him.

Basically this is Harry admitting Nugent is out of his depth in the Premiership and wants to recoup some money to sign a better striker.

Moyes was on the receiving end of alot of critism this summer when he refused to allow Everton to enter the Nugent bidding war. So many fans were convinced that boyhood Evertonian must be brought to Goodison.

Moyes however stood firm, maybe he had watched Nugent enough last season to know his limitations or maybe he saw Nugent's dismal performances in the Euro Championships. Either way Moyes refused to go after Nugent safe in the knowledge that the player wasn't as good as the fans had heard.

While some were throwing the usual Dithering Dave name calling his way, Moyes quietly got on with business.

First he got shot of James Beattie to raise a bit more money. Then he did a deal for Yakubu.

Now we know why Moyes didn't enter the race for average-at-best Nugent, he was after a bigger fish.

He wasn't dithering this summer, he was doing his homework. I hope some of you who blasted Moyes for not signing Nugent now feel guilty.

I don't think Moyes held off Nugent because he was after bigger fish. He was, as you say, not prepared to pay £6m for an untried striker and I absolutely agree with him. He wasn't able to contemplate bigger fish until a couple of weeks ago when £20m materialised, seemingly out of thin air.

Supposedly no money to strengthen the squad - Bill K gets blasted for not attracting any investment, holding the club back etc....We spend £20m to sign some top quality players - Bill K gets blasted for making it "suddenly available". Not having a go and suggesting that’s what you meant Lyndon, just seems a common thread on most of the posts!

To be honest I am happy with the signings Moyes has made over the transfer window.

If they will be successful I don’t know but I am optimistic on this point.

Other than Wessels we have bought players who have premiership experience and have something to offer the club.

Baines was the best player at Wigan. He is a young english player with more than just a bit of class. I think we can all agree that we needed a left back/ We shipped out two who I do not believe were eber as good as Baines is now and he is only 22. At 6 million a lot of money has been spent on a defender but I think this will be money well spent.

Jags was probably again the best player at his club. He is versatile young and again english. This means both know about the club being local lads and both were keen to sign. This I hope will give them a little extra with regards to fighting for the cause. If there had not been a relegation release clause I think he would have been more than 4 million. In todays markets that is little for such a playe he will be a good buy being usful in a number of positions.

Yakubu has replaced Beatie however the only similarities I want to see is the number 9 on his shirt. He is a Nigerian international who will have spoken to Yobo about the club. As such I think he has joined us already knowing Moyes training regime. He has been a regular scorer over the past 4 seasons in the premiership. He is not an untested player from a foreign league who has to initially get use to the pace. As such I feel he will do fine. 11.25 Million is a lot of money however would we rather have had Moyes buy Sunderlands new strike force for a similar price?

The only thing regards the signings that has left a bad taste in my mouth is Manny. granted we only had glimpses of him and he did tend to drift out of ganes. But if he has signed and become a regular I belive he would have turned into a good player or even more, who knows. It is a shame we didn’t have the money earlier, or in fact Moyes had decided he was his priority in midfield. But we may have actually goy lucky with this one someone who, says one thing does another and then jumps ship. Whoever is to blame the club, agents or Manny a bad taste is left as this sort of thing is what is wrong with football as a whole not just our club but clubs all over the world. Money for many is the name of the game. it has little to do with loyalty anymore.

So we now have a problem, we have strengthened the defence and attack. This however leaves the engine room of the team the same as last year in this engine room we have at two excellent players, others may step up to the plate but I think they have already has their oppertunities. If we sign someone to address this I will not only be pleased but suprised due to the timing. As such I will then await January for this to start up again.

One last thing can you tell me where BK was when the money came out of thin air? Because I want to become a regular visitor of that spot.

Every manager, including our Davie, has made bad buys. But I have to admit that its hard to recall an example of what Redknapp must be thinking. Nugent is a very capable footballer, and may even have a wonderful career ahead of him, but players have to fit in to the club they move to.

Moyes has brought in players successfully to strengthen his vision of a team - built on a solid platform. God knows he has tried to add to midfield more recently. And Beattie didn’t work out. AJ adds the pace every good team needs to keep their defence defending and not attacking us.

Please, everyone tonight, raise their mugs of cocoa in the air and wish our Yak the best years of his career, with us.

How do you know Moyes wasn’t able to "comtemplate bigger fish until a few weeks ago". Maybe he’s just playing his cards close to his chest?

Dutch, dont forget who bought Beattie and Kroldrup,Wright,VDM etc.The man is far from infallible, as for going about his business quietly, a certain Sissoko,Emre and Parker spring to mind.
Other than that, I think he is one player short of a decent team.

Told you so, told you so. Just sit there, Dutch, safe in the knowledge that you were right about Nugent. Allow yourself a wry smile and pat yourself on the back. Everton should hire you as a scout!

Moyes has seen AJ play with several different types of strikers at Everton. I’m guessing that he thinks Victor (a player with pace who is also tall and strong) is the sort of striker that compliments AJ the most...which is why he’s bought Yak...as he’s just a better version of Victor.

Maybe I’m being silly but I honestly thought that Nugent would be a good buy for Everton, I realise that being a Blue doesn’t improve your talent as a player but it does help to focus your mind on the cause. You never know we may still end up with Nugent and I for one would be delighted if we did. He could IF he came to Goodison play wide on either wing and not be used as an out and out forward.

Nugent never done anything for me and I have watched him for the last two seasons. He never had any brilliant strengths to his game whereas all our five strikers do. Yakubu is strong and a good finisher. Johnson is quick and streches defenses with his pace. Anichebe is raw but very powerful and quick. Vaughan has a mixture of pace, strength, aerial ability and a good finish. Mcfadden is incosistent but he has good skill and technical ability. That for me is a good mix of talent and any more than five strikers would just be stupid.

Was Moyes actually ever interested? He could of picked him up in January 2 years ago when we where in a bit of a rut but he chose no to. If I remember correctly it was Nugent making all the noises but nothing came out the club. Even when Irvine went to watch the under 21s the players he was probably looking at where Baines and Fernandes.

Dont get me wrong I dont think he an awful player but he would be pretty far down the pecking order so there was no point.

I am very happy with the signings although I would like to see a centre midfeilder before the transfer deadline. Pienaar, Jagielka, Wessels, Yakubu and Baines are players with talent, experience ands hunger. Most of them will expect to play which is a bonus because we will defo have more competition for places.

Imagine a bench of Wessels, Stubbs, Valente, Pienaar, Vaughan, Anichebe and Carsley. Plenty of quality and a few players who can change a game.

Moyes hasnt made a bad signing for a while now and I think he has learned from the likes of Kroldrup and Beattie. Johnson, Lescott, Howard, Fernandes, Jagielka, Pienaar, Baines, Wessels and now Yakubu have been his last signings and they are not bad players.

I think you’ll be showed to be fools by Nugent; because Redknapp is an idiot you think this proves you right? No, the proof is in the pudding...and over the next decade as Nugent shows himself to be one of the best British strikers of the decade, you come back onto this board and apologise for your imbecilic waste of time post. *Mark my words*

Could it be that Nugent has a touch of the "Unsworths"?
Remember he signed for Villa, then 3 days later or so came back to Everton.
Perhaps Nugent is not in the right frame of mind at the moment because he never got the move he wanted, Rednapp realises this and is willing to part with him rather than have him sulking for the next 5 years.
Perhaps Moyes may get his man for 4 million after all?

Moyes transfers in the main have been very solid and astue, Arteta, Cahill, Yobo, Lescott, Johnson, Jags, Valente, Baines, and the Yak.

Some players we have been linked to I would not touch with a barge pole, and when looking at West Ham and Man City splashing the cash, I am very happy that Moyes has taken the slow and steady route. If we can get a good season this term, bring in 3 players of high quality next season, we have a very bright future

I rate Nugent, but don't rate him at ú6mill. But with the market nowadays that's the price for an average player. I do think he will become an established Prem player, he's still playing for the Under-21s, he's got a lot to learn yet. Moyes has had his bad signings but every manager does, even Fergie/Mourinho have had some bad ones. But overall we have a team/team spirit that can beat anyone on our day, a bit different from a few years back.

Now we are seeded for Europe we can move forward and compete at all levels, bring back the good times.1 or 2 more additions still needed though, left-sided player and midfield maestro, but to happen in 2 days with our record of paperwork delays, who knows. I am one happy Evertonian at the moment, onwards and upwards, your in my heart, your in my soul....

I was one of those wanting Nugent, and at the time thought Moyes should have pushed that bit more.

Though I still think that in the future Nugent will be a premiership star I think its clear that he prehaps isnt quite ready for the premiership but most of all isnt ready for Europe.

Well done DM.

Yakubu and AJ to bash it up!!!!

I knew that we shouldn?t have got David just yet I think if we leave him for a few seasons. If he goes to Derby they're bound to get relagated so maybe then when he has some fist team experience in the premiership we can go for him.

FFS lads, give Nugent a chance! He has only played 4 prem games. How can you judge on that many games? So,are you saying, that after 4 games,if the Yak has failed to score and has played totally shite,he will have been a waste of money, and should be fucked off? No,I’ll tell you what you will all be saying. It will go something like"give the Yak a chance,he has only played 4 games,he will need time to settle into the side"This is the same for Nugent,so give the lad a break.

Johnny calm down lad I didnt know he was your boyfriend. The fact of the matter is Redknapp is not an idiot. He is a good manager and has a good knowledge of players. Why do you think he is always bringing players over like Di canio and Yakubu? Because he know his stuff.

He obviously doesnt see anything special in Nugent and nor do I. What are his strengths as a player? He is not quick, strong, a cool finisher or good in the air and for me they are three attributes you need to succeed as a top striker. He is going to have a lot of competition if you think he is going to be the best english strker of the next decade. He would be competing with the likes of Vaughan, Rooney, Agbonlahor, Derbeshire, Lita, Bent, Walcott, Moore and Aston which will not be easy.

I would like to see the lad succeed but trying to sign him after Portsmouth already had is just plain stupid. Being a scouser doesnt give you right to play in the everton shirt and Nugent is exactly the same. NIL SATIS NISI OPTIMUM: only the best will do and Im sorry to tell you this but Nugent isnt the best.

Brian, When I judge Nugent I judge him on the last two years I have seen him play. I have said the lad will be a decent striker but the way people think he is something special just amuses me.

There is no inference from portsmouth that nugent isnt up to it and thats why he might be sold.

Its clear that harry needs to sell to buy, and he has a plethora of strikers, hence nugent is on the potential fire-sale list. Since buying nugent, kanu resigned and that wasnt expected. Its possible nugent was only bought to actually add some pressure to that. Utaka also has started well and so essentially he?s become 3rd choice striker.

Connor,I don’t think Nugent is anything special(yet)but the lad deserves his chance to show what he can do in the premiership.I never wanted us to sign him at £6M.For me that was too much money to take a gamble. All I am saying, is that the fans who are already claiming he is a flop after just 4 games, need to reserve judgement for now,and give the lad a chance.

You are exactly right Brian. As I said I dont think he will be anything special but he will be a decent player. Give the lad a chance in the premiership before judging.

Brendan McLaughlin: Because he didn’t have the money a few weeks ago... that and the fact that Everton refuse to pay any more in the way of wages over the summer than they need to. Moyes likes to sign players early but his paymasters won’t let him.

That, and the lack of funds, was the reason why he apparently had a showdown with Kenwright after the US tour and told him in no uncertain terms to back him financially or else.
