The Mail Bag

Is anyone else at all concerned?

Having Yakubu sign is excellent news and a big boost BUT... has anyone considered what will happen come the new year? Two words: Super Eagles.

Straight off, we'll lose Yakubu, Yobo AND Anichebe ? and not just for one match either. Two strikers out of five down... let's hope our other three stay fit and card free!!

I'm sure Moyes has this all in hand...

Im not too concerened to be honest Tony.

Yobo can be replaced by either Stubbs or Jags.

and as for Yakubu and Anichebe well i would hope that Vaughn will be back as well as Tim Cahill.

He may also move in the january transfer window to cover the loses, who knows?

Tony, I’ve just been looking on the African Nations Site and you are right. For a 3 week period all three could well be missing, four if Appiah turns up. A third of the team missing in Jan/Feb? Not good!

Fear not Cahill and Vaughan will be back.

And from what I’ve heard Anichebe still hasn’t pledged his allegiance to the Super Eagles.

As long as AJ, McFadden & Vaughan as well as Cahill are all fit, we?ll do alright...

I?m sure a couple of the reserves may be able to fill in - wasn?t long ago that Victor & Vaughan were only that... This Jutkiewicz from Swindon should be capable of a bit-part role at some point, as well as Spencer...

Not worried - Jagielka is more than capable cover at the back as well...

Yakubu declined to play for the old Nigeria coach; he’s been picked by the new boss (Berti Vogts) but Im not certain whether he’s said he’ll play or not yet - Im lead to believe the issue wasnt one of playing for Nigeria, but playing for the ex coach whose name escapes me.

The Appiah thing looks a little more likely the more I read about it. Apparently Fener were happy for him to talk to Celtic but they declined in the end due to him currently having a yippy left knee; DM is in contact with Fener and hope to have it wrapped up by tomorrow night.

Hope so, mind you being the captain of Ghana we’d lose him in the Nations cup too, especially as its being held in Ghana next year.

We’re becoming a little Africa!

Scott - the way things are going i think Kieran Agard is more likely to make a brekthrough than Spencer

Tony, don’t forget that Pienaar plays for South Africa. So thats 4 players we will lose... and if we sign Appiah that will be No.5.

Another good reason for encouraging local talent.

Look - if we lose 5 players for what - a month?... We should be able to cope no problem...

Pienaar hasn’t been getting enough match-time thus far that he couldn’t be replaced easily... With Appiah gone (if we even get him) - we’d still have Cahill, Arteta, Osman, Carsley, Neville, van der Meyde?, Jagielka, da Silva (back by then?) and even McFadden and Baines/Valente that could all fill the midfield and get a result...

It’s not like we’d be the only club losing out, but yes, it is ridiculous that there’s a major international competition at that time of the season...

We’ll be alright...

I agree that we should just about have enough cover, particularly when considering we will boast a fit and fresh Vaughan and Cahill(fingers crossed!!).

Furthermore, I am also getting excited by the possibility of Appiah. He really did look a considerable talent in the World Cup and in my opinion stood out slightly more than Essien (who, it cannot be denied, is an absolute cracker!!).

Just a slight aside however about the youth coming through, and the expectation levels of some. Neither Agard nor Jutkiewicz (and I base my judgement on watching both play only 3/4 times) look to be anywhere near 1st XI standard. Agard is undoubtedly very quick and Lukas is a big, strong lad but both share poor first touches and at this stage, cannot be compared to neither Vaughan nor Victor (who I personally think will be plying his trade for an average team in the Championship sooner rather than later).

You know, this really pisses me off, having the African Nations Cup in the middle of the European seasons. I think that all these African nations FA’s, in fact, ALL FA’s,not just African, should be made to pay the wages of any player that they call up into their squad for the duration of any tournament held during that players season. That may make them think twice and hold the tournament during the close seasons.
