Still No 9??

Comments (64)

What the hell is going on here, club record signing, vacant 9 shirt so he chooses 22?? We now have no number 9 until at least January unless Moyes has something even bigger up his sleeve tomorrow!!

Why oh why whould Yakubu not be given/want the sacred 9 shirt. I play up front and have to have the 9 shirt otherwise I get the hump! - I was lucky enough to play (and score!!)in a 'mini' derby before David Unsworth's testimonial at Goodison and when I was offered the 9 shirt I nearly ripped Derek Mountfields arm off!! I was an honour to wear it.

I cannot believe that Everton will have no number 9 this season. Does anyone have any explanation?

Thats strange I would have thought Yakubu would be given the No9. News out of Goodison today says that Yakubu has taken 22. So what does Moyes have in plan for No9?

i think its a good idea to leave the number 9 shirt open because in my eyes you should earn it rather than it being thrown to any player, the number nine shirt is sacred and it should be treated that way, give it to the striker who scores the most goals this season.

Should we guess we would have a new shirt no. 9 or 10 in place by tomorrow afternoon? I have a feeling someone may turn up before the window closes and make us (even more) happy.

Not that it actually matters but I’m assuming it’s Yakubu’s choice. He wore 20 at Boro but that’s Pineaar’s shirt.

What happened to Yakubu and the scarf over the head photo.I havent seen anything in any paper or on Sky.Has he defo signed up properly.Usually by now theres a

Is it not the case that once a shirt number has been registered with the Premier League at the start of the season, it can’t be reused? The famous number 9 shirt was registered with one J Beattie, now that he’s gone I suspect we’ll have to wait ’til next season to see someone (Yak? Vaughan? Adriano?) wearing it.

We aren’t going to make any big signings before the deadline - people who suggest we will are irresponsible & decieving their fellow Evertionans. Its taken me long enough to get over the pain of the Fernandes saga without needing more futile hope instilled - its the hope that will kill you

I’ve heard that the club is retiring the number 9 shirt after Beattie left.

I can’t believe that W R Dean’s number will not be used this season, especially as it marks the 80th anniversary of his 60 goals.

Tony Marsh,

http://www.evertonfc.com/news/archive/new-boy-s-squad-number.html

Not quite the scarf over his heard but good enough.

As for number 22, I’m under the impression 22 is his lucky number -something to do with when he first started playing at Maccabia Haifa- only it was taken at Pompey and ’Boro so he had 20.

To be honest the impact of the shirt numbers has been reduced massively since the allocated squad numbers has come in. Personally I don’t give a toss if they’re wearing 9 or 666 as long as they graft their arses off!

If a shirt is vacated by a player leaving or retiring, it can be reassigned. The rule is that once a player has a squad number for the season he can’t have it switched to another.

Tony- UEFA 1st Rd draw is tomorrow afternoon.

Just saw the photo on the club website. Jeez, he looks built like an ox standing next to Moyes, forearms like Popeye. Can’t wait to see Johnson and Yakubu marauding up front against Bolton. Come on Moyes, another three points for the taking lets bloody go for it against Bolton!!!!

the no. 9 shirt was all stretched after beattie gave it back. Moyes is trying to shrink it in the wash so we can use it next season.

I dont care what number he wears as long as he scores goals. Maybe the number 22 represents how many goals he will score this season. Moyesy best start him on saturday, else I am losing faith, Johnson hasnt scored for 13 games, and doesnt look like he is ever going to again

Bloody hell Anthony, you’re right, he’s bloody huge - maybe we should’ve drug-tested him before he signed on the dotted line!...

As for the 9... What difference does it make?!... Give it to Agard or Spencer when they come on and get a hat-trick in one of the cups!...

If James Fattie was allocated the number 9 shirt when the FA recieved our official squad list, then it cant be allocated to another player until next season as far as Im aware. Hence why its vacant. Who cares anyway? They should all wear 1-11 I reckon, squad numbers are bollocks. Its all for shirt sales these days, fuck all to do with football itself.

I’m with you Graham Nolan. Who cares what he wears as long as he bangs them in.

Its refreshing to have another striker to help out Johnson.

You know i read some boro fans call Yakubu lazy and disinterested. Maybe its because he was playing with a really bad team LOL!!

33   Posted 30/08/2007 at 17:51:44

They should leave it free this season and give it to Vaughan next season, that’ll make the lad work his arse off when he comes back to get it and we’ll have three top class strikers then. I bet he’d kill for that number.
Steve Hopkins
34   Posted 30/08/2007 at 18:02:43

Gravesen....Oh dear!
It took the guy like 4 years to have a decent game for us before turning very pants in Scotland.

If there was ever a proverb about a footballer with no head then Tommy would be ther proverbial headless footballer.

The one moment that for me epitomises him for me was him taking a free kick when we were a goal down (I think it was against the shite, so long a go). The free kick was by the corner flag and we had everybody in the box and he decides to shoot....from the corner flag for god’s sake. I could’ve throttled him myself!

"Gravesen poised to re-sign for Blues"
so says Dominic King in tonight´s Echo. But hang on- King claimed Fernandes was signing in 24 hours too. I am an admirer of Tommy´s myself and think his arrival would not necessarlily be a bad thing

If as many have said the Number 9 shirt cannot be used until next season, how about the club use that shirt number, in programmes and the like, for the unfortunate young Rhys Jones as a sort of tribute to the boy.

I think this is fare becaus next season Moyes can choose if it´s going to be AJ or Yak who is going to be nr. 9, AJ has been good so far so it would be unfare to him if Yak just got nr. 9. Yak has to proof he is good enough for the nr. 9

42   Posted 30/08/2007 at 18:34:43

I don’t see Tommy coming back as necessarily a bad thing but I just can’t understand this:

’With David Moyes anxious to bring in a midfielder before the transfer window closes tomorrow evening, he has explored a number of options and it is understood that Gravesen is at the top of his list of candidates.’

We’ve had six days since the Fernandes deal collapsed, and a supposed 12 million to spend, and this is the cream of the crop? From Lucho, to Fernandes, to Appiah, and now, Gravesen?

In my opinion Gravesen boosts the numbers and does(did at least) have a degree of craft and skill but he’s not the answer to our midfield problem.

Having spoken with my auntie?s cousins uncle stepfathers dog. I have been well informed that a very reliable source with the Goodison ranks that there will be an additional two high profile signing tomorrow. As we are able to use monopoly money the number 9 shirt will be given to Ronaldinho tomorrow evening and later that night number 10 will go to Kaka.

All going well we should have quite an attacking team this year.

That my friend is one of the most exciting posts I have read. Would never have read that had you not posted it.

For Moyes to say "maybe two in tomorrow" is exciting as he always keeps his mouth shut until it happens. I know fernandes was different but that it very strange event.

The Number 9 shirt IS available, it just can’t be assigned to any player who already had a number when Beattie left.

If this is the clubs answer to missing out on fernandes then it stinks to high heaven.
Graveson should be a squad player.
Hopefully he is just that and a big name midfielder will sign in the next 24 hours.
If not and he is the main signing then we really are a Mickey Mouse outfit.
How can you go from gonzales, riquelme and fernandes to tommy graveson.
Nothing against the guy but its kind of a step back.
Oh and if he is the only signing then watch the fernandes money dissapear.

I think not giving the No. 9 to Yakubu in his first season is a good move by Moyes, if indeed it was his decision. There’s enough pressure on the Yak with the price tag without adding the massive expectation that goes with our number 9 jersey.
Nick Crowney
56   Posted 30/08/2007 at 19:04:35

To clarify, I meant that the club had retired it in honour a la Maldini’s number 3 at Milan. Sure, it’s available to someone else but that would be expecting Yakko to live up to Beats goalscoring legend!
