Tommy's Back

Comments (71)

Just seen on club page that Gravesen's back on loan. I really thought all the rumours were just that. Hope he makes me eat my words but I don't think this is the type of addition to the squad that Arteta and Cahill had in mind when they signed extended contracts. Let's hope the club get their act together in time for the January window.

Hopefully this is a stop-gap because if this is the deal to replace Fernandez then I give up!

I agree with several other posters - he was poor for most of the time with the only time he performed to his full potential being when he was coming to the end of his contract. Hopefully he will play like this all of the time because he is playing for his future again.

Everton re-sign Thomas according to the BBC

We do need bodies, but I can't help feeling there was no plan B after Fernandes. And I can't shake the thought that Yak needs to prove his worth...

Thomas the tank is back, with the Adams family style haircut. Good move or bad?, at least he know's the system DM plays. A bit surprised to say the least....

The search for that 'creative midfielder' has taken Moysie back to Mad Dog! Not most peoples first, second or third choice but what the hell at least he's only here on loan for the season. What Gravesen brings to the table apart from an extra squad member is plenty of experience and lets face it he's certainly more creative than Neville and Carsley! Not difficult I know :-) You never know given this is his last chance to get a contract with the BEST TEAM ON THE PLANET and he may come good. Welcome back Mad Dog! It's gonna be a commentators nightmare though with the possibility of three baldies all playing for the mighty BLUES!! LOL!

No, not Grav please! I thought Moyes said he was only going to bring in players who would be an improvement upon those we already have?

Just read on the official site that Gravesen has returned on a loan deal until the end of the season. While I'm hoping and praying that we'll pull a creative midfield player out of the hat by midnight on Friday, I dont think that this is a bad deal at all. The answer to our midfield problems? No, but is he a worse addition to the squad than say Vogel wouldve been? I dont think so. Plus a loan deal means we still have £6m-£12m in the transfer kitty to use up tonight and tomorrow - heres hoping anyway!!!

One a one-year loan deal. At first i thought, oh no plain desperation but i'm not sure.

At least he's not on permanent basis, and he might just get back to old form for all i know.

But, more importantly. Does this mean Moyes is done shopping before January? I certainly hope not.

If this is the clubs answer to missing out on fernandes then it stinks to high heaven.
Graveson should be a squad player.
Hopefully he is just that and a big name midfielder will sign in the next 24 hours.
If not and he is the main signing then we really are a Mickey Mouse outfit.
How can you go from gonzales, riquelme and fernandes to tommy graveson.
Nothing against the guy but its kind of a step back.
Oh and if he is the only signing then watch the fernandes money dissapear

Just wondering what people's opinions are on this. I for one think it's a decent bit of business. He's not ideal, but he'll show a bit of drive and determination that we need in midfield; though I'd rather Appiah.

Not much else to say really. I spose he’ll provide some bite and good cover. Oh well, could be worse I spose, at least its not one of the (Kevin) Nolan sisters.

The official site has just declared that we have re-signed Thomas Graveson on loan for the rest of the season. is this a coup for a man with something to prove or a desperate attempt to bolster the squad?

Gravesen on loan is no bad thing. He adds numbers to the squad and gives options for coming off the bench. I know he has his poor moments but he was our best player a few years ago before he left for Madrid. If it gives Arteta competition to keep him on his toes, hopefully it means Arteta stays in top form and we don't even need to play him!

14   Posted 30/08/2007 at 19:20:00

Why oh why oh why????? The fact he wasn't interested in staying with us when he left for Real Madrid then his agent comes out when he was leaving them saying he wasn't interested in Everton - Now we are in Europe and seem to be on the up he comes back - Not really Manny is it?
Pavel Ivanov
15   Posted 30/08/2007 at 19:15:32

This could be considered official now - Gravesen is back on loan until the rest of the season.

Surely better than the depressing prospect of Neville and Carsley in the middle and playing the ugliest football in the league for the umpteenth season.

I only wish those mysterious 12m for Fernandez had appeared in June when they could have secured a truly classy midfielder who could have taken as to the next level - Albelda or Baraja from Valencia anyone?

that’s a strange move.. I dunno what to think about that one.. i s’pose it’s understandable considering we only have 2 days left in the window.. at least he signed somebody in that position. But Moyes sed he hopes to bring in two more.. maybe has a winger or a full back up his sleeve at deadline day

Ray: "...We do need bodies, but I can’t help feeling there was no plan B after Fernandes..."

If someone shakes your hand and says he will join you, why do you need a plan B. Yes we should have got him sooner but c’est la vie

I hope Grav shows the form that got him noticed by Real Madrid in the first place.

No Phil, perhaps this isn’t the player they had in mind when they resigned, but they probably did have a player like Yakubu in mind, and probably had a player like Baines in mind, and probably had a player like Fernandes in mind until he changed his mind at the last second. I’m glad to have him back and hope he shows some good form while here. Welcome home Tommy G.

Well I’m looking forward to commentators getting in a right mess when we have the baldy trinity of Graveson, Carsley, and Johnson on the pitch.

Also according to some quotes on football365 we might still have another body coming into the squad.

Mad Dawg’s back! Lets give him a chance before writing him off. If we could maybe bring in a left midfielder / teetotal winger, even someone promising from the lower leagues, i’d be very happy with this window.

22   Posted 30/08/2007 at 19:36:13

I suppose considering the situation we found ourselves in, a loan for Gravesen is not too bad.

Moyes does have a good track record with try-before-you-buy loan deals.

I just hope we get the Autumn 2004 vintage model and not the raving, wide-eyed, extravagent loon that he was prior to that period.

Oh and can someone explain to me why so many people hark back to his "engine", commitment and his "steel"? Is it because he is bald?

He’s got more natural footballing ability than most of our midfield, that’s for sure, (which says more about our midfielders than it does about the Dane!) but does he still have enough speed and desire to compete in the Premiership?

I’m assuming that we will now go for at least two out and out forwards (Yak & AJ) in most matches. Does this mean 4-4-2, 3-5-2, 4-3-1-2 or 4-3-3.

5 midfielders would be easy as we now have enough bodies to populate that. With regards to a 4 man midfield, what will be our best offering? Would it be Arteta, Gravesen, Jags/Carsley, Pienaar/Cahill?

I’m really hoping that we can get a head of steam going now and sign a proper, long-term, creative midfielder later in the year to put the icing on the cake.
Leigh Sadler
23   Posted 30/08/2007 at 19:34:13

To be honest it is not a signing to get our juices flowing, but will add a bit more depth to the squad.

Cast your mind back to his last spell, and look at the midfielders he had around him, the likes of Pembridge, Gemill etc. He was pretty much the only person with any creative flare in the middle of the park, and yes he can be erratic at times, but if he can reproduce something close to his form in the last year he had with us, bearing in mind that we will have a chance to link up with Arteta, hopefully Pinnear and with Cahill coming back, and Osman in flashes the future doesn’t look to bad.

That said hopefully it will just be a stop gap until we sign a top class box to box player in the 10 million plus catergory.

im very happy that gravs back.

first job , starve gravesen , poke him with sticks , show him photos of robinho laughing , then lock him in a tiny room with vdm for a few hours and let grav go to work on the fella.

gravs knows us , we know him , he offers experience ,leadership , strength , the odd goal and a killer pass and at the very least competiion for places and a stronger squad.

true legend , nice bit of work by moyes.....love it.

The club run by barnpots have now signed the character with similar mental attributes.
In all the time he was here previously he only performed when he wanted away. Sometimes to show his national manager as well.
He went missing season after season.

This smells of desperation.
If and when we refer to the high ball we can all look up at the big screen and maybe the club will show some old videos of the missus.

Not a bad signing to make the squad numbers up.But,I don’t know if is just me looking into it too much, but on the OS it states Gravesen as a ’deadline - beating signing’(I thought it was midnight tomorrow)I just got the feeling, that it seems no-one else on the way.As I said maybe I’m just reading into it too much.

Ok, Tommy wasn’t the most consistent but lets not bash him down before he has re-kicked a ball for us.
As for the posters who are still moping over Fernandes, the guy gave his word to us a then fucked off to Spain an hour later! Thank God he didn’t sign.
Also, with Fernandes flying the coup at the last minute who were we going to be able to get? Before you all harp about leaving it late it is obvious we have only had the new funds in the last few weeks.
Welcome back Tommy.

Guys, I think this is a really good bit of business, hes not Manny or Appiah, but its presumably only gonna cost us wages so we can’t lose really, besides he was a hero in the year he left, I remember feeling gutted when he went. What I do find really encouraging is that Moyes is preparing to do battle on all fronts which is fantastic, hopefully more will come, but if not I think we have enough now to fight off the likes of Newcastle/Spurs/Man Cities!

34   Posted 30/08/2007 at 19:52:41

Good point, I was gutted when he left too, and he was after all taken by Madrid meaning he was a class act when he went. Only 31 so not over the hill by any stretch of the imagination.

Lets not forget as well, he was passionate as us when playing for Everton, not something he did when he left. Having thought about this, its a good move - bolsters squad numbers and I guarantee you everyone at Goodison will be singing his name first time he steps onto the pitch.

He can be a driving force and we all know it.

Some evertonians are so hard to please!!!!!!
people have been moaning about not having enough bodies and moaning that the yak deal would fall through-well we have yak and now tommy-who I think is a good signing.
Those who think it is a manny replacement are just mad!!!!
Moyes #1 choice (rightly) was gonzalez, #2 choice was manny (who fucked us off for a team in the champions league, hotter climate, closer to home, and is probably on more money) #3 choice could be on his way in January or the ned of the season for all we know.
Lets just be thankful for the signings we have got and hope that we get another before the deadline.
Yes we need top quality but we need bodies and I think Tommy is better than Neville or carsley in the middle so I am pleased.

37   Posted 30/08/2007 at 19:59:38

I don’t think that signing Tommy G is the worse signing in the world, I don’t think its a stop gap and I don’t think its an all avenues exhausted move.

I think its a great no brainer, for a player who has proven himself as a top international. Has Michael Kendrick proved himself as a top journalist? No he hasn’t.

Seriously, you guys here need to quit the sniping at the club, because although you think that your opinions are valid, all they are doing is painting a dark picture of the club. A club that at the moment is doing exceptionally well in comparison then how they were doing 5 years ago.

I expect nothing but pure utopia would make you guys happy eh?

38   Posted 30/08/2007 at 19:59:07

paul m - LOL - Tommy G was one of my favourites. Yes, he was not always on song, but when he was he was a delight to watch - especially during the latter days of his time with us and I was gutted that he did not extend his stay with us first time - but the lure of Madrid was too much - who could blame him? He will have fire in his belly now and will want to prove a point - i for one will be delighted to see him back. I also fully understand if DM does not spend any more money - competition is good now - ok we dont have much flair - but we did not the last time we reached 4th....i would not blame him for saving any dosh until Jan....COYB!

I am happy Grav is back.
He left for Madrid, was played out of position in almost every match and left for Celtic.
He scored 6 times in 18 starts in a shit league where even I would find it hard to motivate myself and I am crap.
I think he will provide passion, vision and creativity to our midfield and for free he will also give Moyes time to find a top class big money buy for January.
Come on Tommy, let’s ave it!

On football 365 moyes is quoted as saying "I believe we could have maybe two more in by then." referring to the close of the window. We are being heavily linked with appiah who wants a move to England - I hope it is true as the lad is quality, more Vieira than fernandes but hey Vieira wasn?t bad - oh and he bangs em in from outside the box for fun!
Gavin Ramejkis
45   Posted 30/08/2007 at 20:05:26

Can somebody please clarify if a deal is underway to what extent does it need to be concluded before the window closes? I’m sure there have been examples where the process was started before the transfer window closed and concluded after it closed because it was so far down the line. If so why not still move the earth for the creative midfield cover wee need for Arteta, had to chuckle when I read Dan Parker saying Graveson will compete for Arteta’s place, they are completely different types of players and Arteta’s name should be one of the first on the team sheet every week.

47   Posted 30/08/2007 at 20:22:57

Good move, a smart move IF we get a creative midfielder in as well. I think seeing Carsley and Nev on saterday giving the ball away and hoofing the ball upfield gave Moysey a nervous breakdown, did you see his face?!

Mad Dog is no creative midfielder, but he can tackle and is a WAY better passer than Cars and Nev combined. Hes Younger than Cars (but so is half the local retirement home) so should have a good engine, and if Nev moves to right back, then it leaves Cars as cover in midfield.

Also I think Moys is pissed of with Cars at his reaction at being taken off last week. Remember what happend to that Sweedish winger who dissed Moyes and got sent packing. Please God Cars will be strictly back up and Nev replaces "Hoof it" Hibbert.

So Pinnar/Macfadden, Grav/Jagg, Oss, Arteta in the middle sounds quite good, if we dont sign anyone else. BUT PLEASE GOD, I hope we sign Appah
Sean Joyce
48   Posted 30/08/2007 at 20:27:09

I just could not believe the backward step we have taken.........Then I thought about and it all makes sense. Mad Dog is only here for cover. He will stand in when the likes of Appiah, Yobo, Big Yak and Victor are all away on African Nations duty. I knew there was a reason for this insanity. As for the fernandes money, If it was ever there at all.......It will pay for Beckham during his season break in LA.
Not so Dissapointed Toffee
49   Posted 30/08/2007 at 20:55:56

Ha, I said that we should do this, just to get us through until January!

This isn’t so bad. Tommy should never have left when he did and I reckon that we’ll get some good hours out of him and a couple of special goals.
Tommy has Euro experience too.

This will see us through to January by which time BK and DM will have lined up someone younger, hopefully.

Does anyone know anything more about Pinnear? I’ve seen som of his stuff on YouTube and he looked pretty handy! WHy has h not had a start yet...

Dare I say it if th worst happens and all our midfielders get injured we still have AVM ...

I dont know know which way to sway with this one. Graveson was outstanding in the last 6 months that he was here. prior to that he was always one of our more dynamic players albeit in what was a poor team compared to what we have now. DM is not the panic buying kind Perhaps the real quality permanent signing we are after cant be done at this time and may have to wait until jan/summer 08. Graveson does provide a cheap temporary cover option until then. What is clear is that we need more bodies in midfield and Grav can at least provide a little extra to what we have now without us taking a big risk in spending a lot of money on a player that may not cut the mustard. Spending 11 million on a quality premiership striker has no doubt not only stretched the purse strings of our club but also our imaginations and expections on what we can bring in.....Howard,Baines, Jagielka, Pienaar, Yakubu Graveson in.. Beattie,Naysmith Pistone, Wright out...we are moving in the right direction.. Perhaps if Moyes has 6 mill to spend he maybe better off waiting until the end of the season to spend it as there should be next seasons budget to add to it. We are reaching the stage where only players 10 mill plus are the kind of players we need to improve our team now. that at least shows progress.
Dan Pedersen
52   Posted 30/08/2007 at 21:12:36

Is this the end of the road? This time Moyes has gone one step to far, and im affraid he is going to pay the price. Worst signing we could make, and a clear signal to all of us. Football at Goodison is going ugly again! He is an idiot as simple as that, and allthough I will stand by my team I cannot applause anything he does! When he came to Everton I kind of liked him but for every year since he has gone in one direction and now its easy to see for all of us - this guy has got NO brain. Welcome Tommy I hope you leave sooner rather than later.

I have to say that I believe this to be an excellent bit of business,no transfer fee,a player who undoubtedly has quality & experience & also knows the working ethos of the team.Thats not say I won’t be dissapointed if another midfielder does not arrive tomorrow.Everyone knows we lack creativity but Gravesen to me is still a big improvement on either of Saturdays centre midfield pairing. If Appiah comes in tomorrow fantastic,if not I would still want to see cheaper option of a box to box midfielder like Diop come in.
Terry Smith
55   Posted 30/08/2007 at 21:29:54

Cant complain we have not bought him and he is someone Moyes knows all about. He can motivate players and gives us something different in the middle of the park and has european experiance.I would rather this than a expensive european gamble on someone we know nothing about. He has the rest of the season to prove himself and im quite sure he can do this and become a much needed squad player.I have also heard that Appiah of Fenerbache is on one of the hotels in Liverpool to have a medical and sign for the blues before the window closes.

Being a good tackler is not enough these days but maybe my expectations are higher than yours .

Suggested this may happen on Monday and I, for one, think it’s a smart move.

Whilst there is always some truth in the ’ never re-heat a souffle ’ argument, we should remember we were gutted when he left ( our performances went downhill that season after that ), he has played at a very high level whilst away and thirdly has something now to prove. Got to be worth a punt.

After being given 5 days to find somebody from nowhere, this is about as much as Moyesie could have hoped for.

I’m actually not surprised that Tommy G is back , the chances of securin a deal for a top class midfielder after Fernandes’s u turn was nigh on impossible , at least he can boost the squad and offer a bit of experience , plus the added bonus of if any of the dirty b****rds try taking mikel out of the game , " Tommy’s gonna get yer " .... he’s a decent player , and can score the odd goal as well , With TC due back , they just might get us through til january

63   Posted 30/08/2007 at 22:18:18

Dont know why everyone is criticising this so much. As well as being desperate for some creativity, we also need someone who will show for the ball, show some composure when they have it and pass the ball to feet, rather than just launch it skywards.

Having been at Celtic and Real Madrid since he left he will hopefully add some European experience to what is a relatively young and inexperienced squad.

It also provides us with a reasonable stop-gap solution for very little outlay; leaving Moyes some time to ensure that whoever we do bring in long term is not a rushed purchase or overpriced.

In any case I’m not sure Moyes is sure about how pienaar will fit into the squad. If he eventually ends up in the middle, perhaps we will after a left winger rather than a centre mid.

Nervous about Grav.. If he is cover for African nations then, good biz by DM. I can’t help thinking that we are so close to the next level.
Does Tommy take us to the next level? Probably not! The work-rate is there, what about the flair? Show me Appiah or a speedy winger. Get it done DM

This could be a really good piece of business. People talk of his inconsistency but this is hardly fair. A true appraisal surely has to consider the context of his playing career at Everton. The bulk of his time at Goodison was spent under Smith possibly the worst Manager in the history of the club. Someone who who would select 10 defenders in his starting eleven if they were available. His fractious relationship with Tommy was well publicised. Indeed he was often left out of the squad. His re-emergence coincided with the arrival of Moyes who basically allowed him the freedom to roam. He showed a tremendous fighting spirit which often lifted the spirits of the players around him. Sadly we never quite replaced him when he left. I think his biggest problem has been his difficulty to gel with managers but Moyes certainly brought out the best in him. He is a little older but hell he’s on a free and can still do a job for us. Welcome back Tommy

Does anyone know what number Gravesen is? Why has Yakubu been given 22 when 9 is available? Number 10 is stil vacant for Riquelme tomorrow.......

Point taken, David. I agree that Moyes has done some tidy transfer business this summer. After seeing the Blackburn game, though, I’m just worried about Arteta having to shoulder all the creative responsibility. I’m excited by Yak’s arrival but from what I saw of Phil Jag in the same game, I think Tommy could be surplus to requirements. Now we need craft more than graft in the middle of the park.
