Typical

One noticeable characteristic of Everton is how long transfers take if the player involved is quality. Another noticeable characteristic is how quickly they can swoop for dross. To re-sign Gravesen is an act of desperation. He is nowhere near as good as he thinks he is and hardly a suitable alternative to Fernandes.

Team spirit will suffer if he tries to subdue and bully some of the younger team members as he did in the past. I hope we are not in for a season of Gravesen throw-ins, Gravesen free-kicks, Gravesen corners but I fear that we are. If his talent measured up to his ego, I could just about accept his return. Another typical Moyes signing and testimony to his apparently woeful lack of knowledge of suitable creative midfielders.

Oh piss off. Another typical Moyes signing, like Arteta, Cahill, Baines, AJ, Yakubu, Lescott, Neville. And I’m sure Arteta won’t be taking any more free kicks or corners any more either, right? Get a grip.

Look, Tommy G is exactlythe kind of player we’ve missed - name one other player in the current squad that would bleed for the cause...

He took over from big Dunc in the role of the people’s player and I have no doubt he will resume that position now... He’s a good player, not a moron, so if someone else is better suited to taking free-kicks etc, I have no doubt he will let them! - at the time when he was with us before, were there any other options?!...

I for one am glad that mad-dog’s back onboard!...

Boo to the naysayers...

Everyone relax. There’s still a day to go in the window and money to spend. The Appiah thing isn’t necessarily dead. Gravesen provides depth and represents good value if you get him for 2 million or less and ESPECIALLY if he’s just on loan. Not every signing represents the club’s assertion that it solves all problems. Gravesen is a nice piece to have, whether we sign anyone else or not. Hopefully we do, but he doesn’t make us a worse team. Remember how small our squad is. I have no problem with someone like TG coming off the bench or making a spot start.

If fernandes lets you down with days to go before the deadline closes what else do you expect! given the circumstances we could have signed worse!

Re David Barks.

The last minute return of Gravesen smacks of the same desparation that got us Simon Davies not the well thought out signings named.

Alan, we have gotten Tommy on loan, we haven’t spent any of our transfer kitty on him. So it’s not really the same thing mate.

dissapointing signing, he did a job for us in the past but that was then, I just hope he is used as extreme back up, cover for injuries, hope he doesnt undermine jagielkas position. moyes has brought him in for numbers and he does have a wealth of european experience. I still would rather we gave vidarsson or da silva a real go, I hope moyes knows what he is doing with da silva, cause for me he looked our most creative player during the summer friendlies, why ship him out on loan?? give him his chance

While the total period of Tommy’s last stay at Everton could never be described as phenomenal, his last six months were exceptional. He was our best player in that 4th finish season even though he only played half of it. And I remember plenty of posts on this website after he left, when we faltered badly, saying how much the team were missing his contribution.

So badly did we miss him (and so badly did DM know we were going to miss him) that DM went and undertook a ’Panic Buy’. Mikky!

So we have that to thank Tommy for too!

We should have let him rot away in Celtic’s reserves. He will still cost us the inflated wages he has decided he is worth since moving from us. I don’t believe that he and Sivebeck will let him loose out financially.

Ok, so as it stands, our midfield is as follows:

Arteta, Cahill, Pienaar, Jagielka, Gravesen, Osman, Neville, van der Meyde, Carsley, McFadden...

I’m not losing any sleep... we’re not going to win the Premiership just yet, but we sure as hell aren’t going to finish out of the top 6...

Alan - Signing Simon Davies in desperation?! Moyes had been chasing him for 18 months! Graveson is good for cover, esp with African cup of Nations if we manage to land the quality to improve our squad in Appiah.
Matt Sweeney
12   Posted 30/08/2007 at 19:51:36

Funny you say Simon Davies after moyes sighed him up at the start of the summer, after trying to sign him for about a year. Desperation buying? Ignorant swine.

we got gravesen on a loan, so he’s only costing us wages. how is that a bad signing?
Alan Rolfe
13   Posted 30/08/2007 at 19:55:34

Appiah would bring quality but could add to the Xmas exits of the Yak, Pienaar, Yobo, and possibly Victor who will all wander off to the 2008 African Cup of Nations just when we need them to kick start our overdue attack on the FA Cup.

It?s been too long since 1995.

I’m glad Tommy Grav is back. Even if he is only here as a squad player he will give us invaluable European experience. And any player that plays for Real Madrid can’t be that bad. I for one welcome him home. Look forward to seeing those piercing staring eyes again!!

15   Posted 30/08/2007 at 19:45:15

I find the assertion that he bullied everyone and ran a one-man show in his last spell unsubstantiated nonsense. If it did seem like that I would hazard a guess that it was because he possessed natural footballing ability and is an extrovert (when on the pitch). This time round, he’s got a better caliber of player around him and additionally, these players are now seasoned pros used to playing at a particular level (i.e. not scrapping against relegation).

I’m actually intrigued at how Mad Dog is going to line up in midfield, especially when all are fit. I’m hoping this will end Phil Neville’s sojourn in MF and push him to his natural fullback position, probably at the expense of Hibbert.

All is not lost and believe it or not, we aren’t the laughing stock of English football that some would have you believe. I’m looking for an upturn in our fortunes at Bolton and an increase in the number of carved openings for our attack-minded players! And after that? More of the same for the rest of the season!

It makes me piss that people are saying we are desperate for re-signing Gravesen. How many games have you seen him play in the last 12 months?
He is not the answer to take us to the next level, however I think he’ll be a great squad player, who has played in Champions league teams for the last 3 years.
FFS sake, give the fella a chance. He’s not even pulled the shirt on yet and here we are slagging him off.
We’ve spent approx £20 million this window, and brought in 6 first team players.
Talk about the glass being half empty!!

I am happy Grav is back.
He left for Madrid, was played out of position in almost every match and left for Celtic.
He scored 6 times in 18 starts in a shit league where even I would find it hard to motivate myself and I am crap.
I think he will provide passion, vision and creativity to our midfield and for free he will also give Moyes time to find a top class big money buy for January.
Come on Tommy, let’s ave it!

18   Posted 30/08/2007 at 20:01:44

What is the problem with some people? Tommy G had the chance to move to Real Madrid and there aren’t many players that turn them down, so give Mad Dog a break. He’s on loan if it doesn’t work out then c’est la vie off he swans into the sunset. But and it’s a big but if he produces the kind of form in his last season with the mighty Blues then for me it’s worth the punt. He knows the system at Everton a lot of the players and what is required, so that means he won’t take long to get settled. Please my fellow BLUES lets just unite get behind the team as always and dust off those passports!!!! COYB!

19   Posted 30/08/2007 at 19:53:39

Quite frankly I don’t know whether Tommy is a good signing or not. But he could be. For me it all depends on what David Moyes wants to use him for.If he wants to play him every game as the creative midfielder he will be found wanting, but as a squad player he could be very valuable and a useful option on the bench. But it really pisses me off when the view is presented that David Moyes only buys crap. ALL managers buy crap sometimes and you don’t have to look any further than across the park or down the M62 for some of the best examples! Not so long ago we were relegation battlers every season and couldn’t attract anyone to this club other than geriatric Frenchmen, dubious Italians and an assortment of everybody elses cast offs. We now have a crop of players at the Club who may provide the core of a team that is going places and is a young crop of lads to boot! Tommy G will not be a part of that. Tommy G is not a replacement for Fernandes, he is a little more depth to the squad and will provide some useful experience. For Christ’s sake I don’t think David Moyes is the best manager in the world but neither is he the worst...far from it. Give the guy a break!

I can't believe some of the negativity in the mailbag following the news that we have got Gravesen on loan for the season. 'Smacks of desperation'! 'Surely this is not the replacement for Fernandes?'!

Of course its a desperate move. We are in a desperate situation because a greedy money-grubbing Portugese twat (and/or his agent) decided to bolt at the last minute. Of course Grav is not the replacement for Fernandes ? he's a stop-gap, which is evident from the fact we have loaned him rather than spending any of our transfer kitty on him.

When Moyes has more time (e.g. in the lead up to the January window) we may see a big name midfielder coming on to the books. But in the meantime I wholeheartedly welcome the crazy bald Dane back with open arms. He will fight tooth and nail for the blues, add a little flair and weigh in with a few goals. COYB!!!!

Tommy G was our best player by a mile theseason he left.He looked real quality when he first played for Madrid then got what a lot of players get over there..the bench.
Dont judge Tommy on his Celtic form that league could drag anyone down.Arteta was supposed to be useless when he was at Rangers and look how he turned out.Beggars cant be choosersso lets have him as a squad player and take it from there. We need more bodies in the squad with Europe coming up.I reckon he will be buzzing when he pulls the old Blue jersey on at Goodison and it just might spark the old fire up.Lets hope so.
David Barks

24   Posted 30/08/2007 at 20:13:30

Welcome back Tommy. It was bad enough to find a team with such a threadbare squad last season but with Europe looming we need squad players with experience. He fits the bill, and will I reckon play well with Arteta. I’d rather have him than Nolan or the Wardrobe.
Karl Jones
25   Posted 30/08/2007 at 20:15:44

IF Gravesen can recapture the form he showed before he left, he will be a great stop-gap signing for us.
With Yak and Johnson up front, we need someone who can hold the ball and play the threaded pass. Neville, Jag. and Carsley are to similar (sideways or back).
This will give DM time to look for someone more permanent as there aren’t that many around. Stephen Appiah, and especially Vogel are not good enough for this role. Gravesen, I believe is better than both.I think his infectious enthusiasm added to the qualities we already have at the club will improve us even more.

Oh Tommy, Tommy well I didn’t expect to be siging that again. Although not excited about his return I can see the reasoning behind it. He is not as some suggest a replacement for us missing Manny, he is here to bolster the squad.

He knows the club and I cannot remember him saying anything but good about us after he moved on( how often can we say that?).

Moyes is well aware of what he can offer us having worked with him before. He will be good to hvae in the squad and on the bench. If he grabs onto this oppertunity in what will probably be his swansong he could hopefully silence a few detractors.

A good addition although not for the future but for here and now.

I have my doubts but will allways get behind a player until he proves me wrong.

To end,

Oh Tommy Tommy-Tommy Tommy Tommy Tommy Graveson.

When I was told about Mad Dog returning I thought it was a joke. Its not very funny.

I have serious reservations over Yakubu’s signing and now past-his-best Graveson. A player who was hot and cold at his best.

This time last week were expecting an annouchment on Fernandes (Scum) signing and now we have Tommy Graveson!! What are you doing Moyes? I can’t defend when you have clearly gone mad.

My faith in Moyes is being tested to its limit.

Tommy is a good addition. Especially if he goes back to the hard working intimidating force he was before. Hopefully with him, Arteta can spend more than 5 seconds with the ball before some hack on the other team takes his legs out.

Allan Hobbs is right, I too have noticed a change in Dutch, he’s really been negative on the team recently.

Normally Dutch is the most positive poster on Toffeeweb, his passion for Moyes is annoyingly over-the-top devotion. A real glass half full type of guy.

What’s happened Dutch? Have you lost your faith?
Dave Southword
39   Posted 30/08/2007 at 21:02:19

More pathetic Toffeeweb negativity surrounding Gravesen coming back.

"Desperation leads to Gravesen". Smart quick thinking if you ask me. Find someone else who we could borrow, can pass and trap a ball, scored 6 times in his last 18 club appearances and needs zero settling in time.

"Ageing midfielder" - FFS he’s 31 and will be ooh 32 when his loan is finished.

He’s still Mad Dog, but he’s not Top Dog. He’ll have to fight to get into the team these days. More players, a bigger squad - isn’t this what Toffeeweb has been screaming for?
Chris Leyland

Keeper - missing
Left back - Pistone
Left centre half - Unsworth
Right Centre half - missing
Right back - missing
Left Midfiled - Beagrie
Centre Mid - Tommy Grav
Right Mid - Andy King ( I know he wasn’t strickly speaking a midfielder)
Upfront - Big Dunc, Dave Johnson and Jeffers

Manager - Howard Kendall

41   Posted 30/08/2007 at 21:07:20

Er, people agreeing with Tony Marsh, isn’t that reason enough for Tommy to come back in itself!

People are being too harsh on Moyesey. He obviously assumed Manny would be signing and when that fell through realised it was to late to sort out another big signing and Grav offers something he knows and can rely on (until January window?). If he plays to his form then he’s certainly good enough for our squad.
Dutch Schaffaer
42   Posted 30/08/2007 at 21:13:51

Resigning old players on-loan is always a good idea. Franny Jeffers was fantastic when Moyes brought him back on-loan from Arsenal and Howard Kendall’s decision to bring back Peter Beagrie on-loan was inspired.

44   Posted 30/08/2007 at 21:36:08

Tommy will be motivated to prove himself and be hoping to earn a new contract. You know he will love running out in front of the Goodison faithful again, and there is much more competition for a place in the team now than there was when he was here previously. These things should all inspire the man and allow Everton to get the best from him. I wouldn’t mind seeing him line up for us at Bolton, with Carsley Arteta and Osman.
Ray Robinson

Chris Leyland - got to be room for Stubbs in your team!
Stan
46   Posted 30/08/2007 at 21:49:07

Chris. Jags at right back if you include him being here when he was a kid?

As for those slagging of Grav and the fact that he is a poor alternative to Fernandes - He hasn’t kicked a ball yet and the transfer window isn’t closed yet. I’d rather have Grav in on loan than millions spent on Nolan or Fletcher.

Give him a chance first

Keeper - missing
Left back - Pistone
Left centre half - Unsworth
Right Centre half - Stubbs
Right back - Jakielka
Left Midfiled - Beagrie
Centre Mid - Tommy Grav
Right Mid - Andy King ( I know he wasn?t strickly speaking a midfielder)
Upfront - Big Dunc, Dave Johnson and Jeffers

Manager - Howard Kendall

Just leaves a keeper. I know Mark Ward was a midfielder but I’ve heard he is good at handling things. So can we put him between the sticks?

did Pistone leave and come back? Or did it just seem like that because of the length of his injuries?
Chris Leyland
49   Posted 30/08/2007 at 22:09:27

Pistone left at the end of the 2204/5 season having turned down a one year deal. He was then about to sign for Lecce as a free agent at the start of the 2005/6 season when we offered him a 2 year contract. So technically thuis was his 2nd spell at the club.

Arteta is are set peice master and thats how it will stay, even tho he will be able to deliver when Arteta is not producing!

Thanks Tony.

With Jags in goal that leaves right back free, so I’m going to switch Pistone to right back, put Unsy left back and bring in Howard Kendall as player manager at centre back. He was player manager and had slowed up a bit so might make a good Baresi type of sweeper.

57   Posted 30/08/2007 at 22:24:16

It has been mentioned that Gravese n only had half a good season in five.

What people dont mention is in that time the number of shite players he had along side him in the midfield. We never had a consistent and settled midfield The number of players who tried to establish themselves and be any good is very long..... Pembridge, Nyarko, Alexanderrson, Gascoigne, Linderoth, Tal, Ginola, Gemmill, Blomqvist, Stephen Hughes, Li Tie, plus full backs who played in midfield Unsworth, Watson, Naysmith etc

Gravesen was the constant member of the side, with little help and no continiuty. Yes, he was frustrating at times, but there was no doubt in 04/05 he was outstanding.

Given the timeframe we had after the Fernandes saga, the squad is stronger with Gravesen in. No outlay of transfer fee and someone who knows what the club is about.

Be good if we could add one more tomorrow but would have settled for this a month ago

Papa Bouba Diop’s best role was the Voodoo man in Live and Let Die.

I can’t see the FA letting play on the front of a train, although if it was Liverpool, I’m sure allowances would be made.

Graveson’s signing might put Pip’s nose out a bit as he will assume the mantle of team motivator automatically. Hopefully though, Phil will now be picked at right back, which automaticqally strengthens our midfield, and back four.

Still be Appiah if Stephen signs though - all the times I’ve watched Grav play for us, only 1 in 3 was really good, and he is definitely not box to box.

68   Posted 30/08/2007 at 22:12:52

Before spuddy came to prominence, Tommy was the darling of the Gladwys. He was also my favourite player, he’s the kind of enigma style player that I like. My previous favourite was Limpar who I unashamedly rated higher than Kanchelskis. I think that Tommy is a real Everton player. Why?

Tommy is passionate, he’s frustrating, he blows hot, he blows cold. He can at his best, be the best (how else would he have got to Madrid?). Tommy is what I like to call a conductor. He is the kind of midfield general we need. Has anyone ever seen Tommy shy from the ball? Has he ever not offered a pass? I know Arteta does this, but he does not have Tommy’s size, build, or presence to seriously play in the middle and so he’s best out on the wing coming inside to influence play.

I loved Tommy from the day he signed. All those who ask what he did in the first four years either: 1) have never played football to a decent standard, 2) did not go to the games, 3) do not like football to be played beautifully.

i remember the first time we saw Tommy. Me and my mate Johno went up to Preston for what was then our annual pre-season game. Tommy was billed as the opposite of gazza. Mad dog, the big butch enforcer. He burst through one on one with the keeper and we all expected him to leather it straight past the keeper, instead he feinted and hit a delightful chip over the keeper. From that moment on I knew Tommy was special.

So why did people moan about him for 4 years? Can anyone remember our team? a typical team would have been: Gerrard and a back four of Watson, Weir, Stubbs and Unsworth. With pembridge, gemmil and Alexandersen joing Tommy in Midfield and Super Kev or Big Dunc up front with Radzinsky.

Is it any wonder he could be so frustrating. How could you pass to any of them? Alex wouldn’t bomb down the wing. Pembo, I was won round by the fella, but he really did get the jitters if he got over the halfway line. gemmil, a pass to him was like a pass to the opposition. Tommy wouldn’t hoof it to either of the big fellas and the opposition always watched Rad for the ball over the top and Rad was so slow mentally that my nan would have beaten him to it. That usually meant Tommy dithered time and time on the ball looking for killer pass. He also saw the ball so really as Unsworth and Stubbs really mortar bombed the oppostion looking for Ferguson, whether he played or not, that Tommy would get so frustrated that he would run round the pitch demanding the ball. Also if he ever lost it he would go on a mission to get it back such was his passion.

further, some say good then past it now. 31 years of age past it? Has he lost that legendary pace? oh he didn’t have any? Has he had a bad injury? No? Then he can’t have lost his touch. The only thing is he hasn’t played much. Then surely he must have plenty in the tank for an old man? Moyes will get him fit. If there’s one thing he’s good at its getting hardworkers into the best shape of their lives. Tommy is one of those.

Tommy is passionate. Did we not hear stories have how he hung a picture of big Dunc above his matle peice in spain to remind him of everton commitment and dedication. I hope it is true.Tommy is passionate and I hope that his passion allows him to kick off the dust.

Imagine Tommy taking the ball off the back four and looking to pass to Pienaar, Spuddy, Cahill, Johnson or Osman with a killer trademark reverse pass. Makes your mouth water.

Tommy’s on a free. He’s 31. he offers craft and guile. He knows how to awaken a crowd, however you feel about badge kissing, fist waving or clumsy tackles, he could always get the Glawdys to life even in the darkest of the Walter days.

The only question over Tommy was his defensive capabilities. Moyes knows all about this. The year we finished 4th was due to Moyes saying to carsley "sit" and telling Tommy to forget about defending, and so playing 4-5-1 to accomodate this. Tommy has the craft, the vision, the touch, the passion. He’s on loan, costs nowt but wages, he knows half the team. He loves the fans. How can we lose?

One last point, lets forget about the whole "mad dog" tag. And he’s an attacking midfielder, not a defensive midfielder. The mistake about that comes from Germany. Following Beckenbouer, Germany likes a sweeper in front of the back four who picks up the ball and sprays it around, "quarterback" style. The position requires no real tackling ability as the game is different to ours and whilst we have Carsleys in England, they have Matthaus in germany (did you ever see him make a tackle?). That’s the kind of role Tommy grow up playing, Once he got to behind the front one or two he found found his niche.

And that’s it. Play Tommy in the Cahill role, forgive him his defensive deficiencies and his refusal to make a simple pass and enjoy the entertainment. I have enjoyed few everton games as much since tommy left as I did when he played.

Tommy is a real Everton player, just like McKenzie and Limpar. he’s flawed, he’s frustrating, he’s an engima, but boy am I glad he’s back.

Welcome home, Tommy.

Qu about Appiah: before you bang on about him - have you ever seen him play? And if so aginst whom? How long ago? And what was it about him that impressed you so much?

I say this, as I saw him a couple of years ago. He looked good aginst poor opposition. He looked poor against good opposition. He runs into blind alleys. he fouls people too much. He does not have the eye for a long pass. He is not creative. Basically, do not believe that he is JJ Okacha reborn. He would not be a bad squad player, but I wouldn’t spend more than £2 million on him. Plus he plays for Ghana alot. Ghana is a higher priority for him than his club. He’s got over 50 caps and he’s only 27.

This ain’t how its supposed to be. Tony Marsh applauding Moyes’s decision to sign Graveson & Dutch slating it. But I have to agree, Tommy is no Fernandes.

Tommy couldn’t wait to come back to us. Fernandes told us to stick it where the sun don’t shine.

lee...........why doom and gloom because I do not rate Gravesen? An infuriating midfielder for the best part of five years as far as I am concerned, but that is just my opinion. It is obvious that some fans like him and that is their choice.

Second time around, he will not need to be trying to do everything on the pitch now that the squad is better than in Smith’s day. My other concern is that his arrival may well hold back Jagielka and Pienaar.

Some of my criticism of Moyes is linked to the fact that 70% of his purchases have been from other British Clubs and he does seem reticent to explore the foreign markets. His philosophy of better the devil you know has resulted in some poor quality football during his tenure and after 5+years he should be willing to involve more young, overseas players.

Finally, if the offer of a million is genuine, you might be surprised how positive my reaction would be.

Steve Ferns I’ve read every contribution here on the Gravesen debate and have to say your submission is by far the most considered opinion I’ve read. You’ve offered a very detailed and thorough appraisal and given the subject justice, in total contrast to some of the knee jerk responses. Have to say I find myself in total agreement. Contrary to some assertions I believe the bulk of fans responses are overwhelmingly in favour of his return. I’ve no doubt he will receive a great reception from the fans when he makes his appearance at Goodison.

Cheers Gerry

I just think some thought we were getting the guy to take us single handedly into the top 4 and now think he haven’t. oh, hang on didn’t Grav do that? 40 points in half a season with him, and 20 without? If not for spuddy, i think we would have been caught.

Tell ya what i’m a big fan of Tommy and always have been, he’s got class and cost us nothing.

I bet the people who are slaggin him off are the same people who said sign Kevin Nolan.

Now that would be a step back.

Steve Fern: SPOT ON!

Gravesen & Mikky in the same team, all we need now is for Mikky to shave his head!

Oh and one more thing... Tony & Dutch stop messing about... this is not the Twilight Zone!!!
