Let's all get real!

Comments (49)

I cannot believe that so many people are getting carried away by an average performance against a team destined for relegation.

For much of the game, all our old faults were in evidence and if Lescott hadn`t got lucky we would all be bemoaning a poor performance. The truth is that only the result was satisfactory and if we play like that we shall be taken apart by the "big boys".

To me, Yakubu hardly looked £11M better than Anichebe and Johnson continues to shoot AT the goalkeeper rather than at what surrounds him. The return of Gravesen just has to be a piss-take for his performance showed that he is still the headless chicken of long ago.

Granted, Jags and Baines managed to demonstrate what full-back play is all about but, for Christ`s sake, full-backs dont WIN matches.

Where, oh where, was the playmaker even the naive Moyes must know we have been crying out for? Without him we shall be stuffed before Christmas for certain!

So please, can we all get real? Top 10 will be an achievement with this rag-bag of expensive signings, surely?

Tsk, tsk, Alan. I don't think many will be ready for your reality/pessimism/doom-&-gloom [delete as appropriate]. On one level we have had a good start to the season (up among the pace setters) ... but on another, we are actually one point behind our coresponding performances from last season, comparing game for game. There's a long way to go (obviously!) but that won't stop the "Moyes is a genius" crowd from crowing loudly. Let's hear it now for David Moyes, brilliant tactician, fantastic coach, and all-round really good manager!!!

"The return of Gravesen just has to be a piss-take for his performance showed that he is still the headless chicken of long ago"

Ermm, are you fucking blind?...:

Everton were very much on the back foot, so boss Moyes threw Gravesen into the fray in place of Carsley.

Alonso was shooting at every opportunity, forcing Howard to save low down with another powerful effort.

Gravesen’s arrival gave Everton a measure of control, and Pienaar was narrowly off target from 10 yards.

The Dane then released Johnson, but Bolton keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen made a vital block.

Gravesen then brilliantly created an opening by sending in Mikel Arteta, but substitute Leon Osman shot high over the bar.

And he was involved again as Everton took the lead in dramatic fashion with 90 seconds left.

Gravesen’s corner was met at the far post by Lescott, who headed home powerfully.

For the time he was on the pitch, Gravesen was no headless chicken, he won us the game

More negativity! makes me sick!

Sitting 2nd, money to spend! UEFA cup games to look 4ward 2.

We have a vastly improved squad from last season.

Can we not just enjoy things for a bit.

Cahill will be back soon 2!

There are tablets you can take for depression. Why don’t you take a few. We know we are not Real Madrid or even Liverpool but for fucks sake can you not take some satisfaction that we can now win games that a few years
ago we would have been well and truly tonked in? There is a cold, dark river waiting for those depressives who cannot see even the dimmest glimmer of light in Everton’s performances and it seems to me that there are those who are absolutely determined that they will never see that light, however dim or bright. Why don’t you fuck off and support some team which is really crap like Spurs who have spent millions for fuck all while we have spent about half their total and are doing quite well thank you very much. I watched Manchester United this afternoon and there was nothing in their performance that was better than I have seen from the Blues so far this season. Great teams don’t arise overnight, it is a long process and if it is not fast enough for you with respect to Everton then I recommend that you give up watching football because although I have no doubt you have a fine opinion of what you would like to see you have no idea how difficult it is to achieve it. Have a little patience for Christ’s sake!

Why does everthing have to be so black or white? We won. The squad improves further still. Rather than panic buy after being let down by Fernandes Moyes brought back Tommy G to give us something else in midfield and a bit of strength in depth. Am just watching today’s game now and at half time we seem to have been trying to play the game the right way and the goal was a lovely move by Jags, Stevie P and AJ, finished off by the Yak. Excellent move by many of Moyes’ latest sigings. We’re not world beaters yet, no, but we’re getting alot better all the time.

Ok, and having just watched the second half... we were under the cosh a bit, as you’d expect playing a top 8 side at their place. Gravesen came on and showed good positional sense, played a number of excellent through balls in (one delightful one to Mikel - oh how good it is to see the magician played in on a ball normally only he can play!). Oh, and Tommy G put in a great corner for the goal. I agree with Moyesey, how often has it been in the past that we look at the bench and the biggest threay we’ve had is Nace? Now we had Ossie, Tommy G, Faddy and big Vic. And anyone who suggests the Yak isn’t 11m better than Vic - well, no he isn’t which is credit to big Vic. But - he has been visibly tired and carrying an injury recently. And how many of us held our breath every time AJ took a knock? We needed to take the pressure off the kids which we haven’t done for years at EFC. Now we can and let them develop properly. I was proud of that performance today and the result. Early days yet and i think this team will improve. And we played football today. The Everton way. It’s not always great but we’re making strides.

Just a few years back I can remember us going ahead in away games, conceding an equaliser then folding like a pack of cards to lose 2 or 3-1.
This squad of players that DM has put together don?t do surrender. We have a team that has self-belief right down to the 90th minute. Their fitness is a credit to the back room staff.

Certainly a bit harsh this post but Alan’s right when he says we shouldn’t get carried away.Anybody would think we’d beat Chelsea!
And just because he holds a view which is more critical than most doesn’t mean he’s a Kopite-or a gobshite.
Some of the crowing over a fairly ordinary performance is totally over the top and the same people making these comments will be quueing up to slag off the team as soon as they lose as they surely will.

Michael Kenrick.Just noticed your comments.Im pretty sure if we won the league under moyes (and im not saying we will) you would find something negative to say about it.Why cant you cant you be genuinely positive for a change. Were second in the league man.Swallow your pride and admit we are a decent side nowadays.

Enjoyed the victory but thought we were still lacking in midfield.Arteta is very ordinary away from the worshiping home crowd and Graveson is hardly an improvement on Carsley.Moyes should have sorted the Manny deal in May not waited until last week.
The team is still one dimensional and will get murdered against the Big Boys-especially........

Like all blue fans I want perfection,I am not a Moyes fan but to be so critical after today seems unfair, one of my main complaints is we score they score we try and hold out for a draw but twice now we have been in that position and dug in and won so to me thats progress and as I blamed Moyes for lacking in going for the draw I would be a sad man if I did not give him the credit in going for the win yes we are not there yet but there are signs of improvement

Baines is class. Not often have i seen a left back so comfortable on the ball. Good tackler but great going forward....a good footballer. way ahead of hibbert on the opposite side. Arteta has the strongest head of hair i have ever seen!.....again a great footballer to boot. things are looking up. think where we were six years ago....its all rosy

Totally agree with this posting. You’d honestly think we’d won the league instead of just beat a poor Bolton side in the last minute.
Everton are still very much work in progress and won’t go to next level until Moyes makes midfield his prioity. How long does he want to sort this longstanding problem?

Regards the original post. Unlike the odd supporter I do not expect perfection with Everton. This was a good 3 points for us, in the past we would have hung on for a draw and probably lost in the last few minutes Man City last year as an example ,this time we didn’t.

Moyes is not Naive and tried to sign the midfielder that we cry out for. It didn’t happen, but that goes for most if not all managers. Unlike computer simulations people are involved and its not just a matter of paying the money and signing them up.

Full backs can win you games as can goalkeepers, you can have the best midfield creator in the world but he alone will not be enougth it requiress a team. We have got a team, not yet complete but getting there. We are not a long way away as the poster states but we are not there yet.

Before we start ripping into Yakubu etc lets give them a chance to get to know each other and gell with the more established players. I think you will find that Chelsea and Man Utd the biggest two have had to do the same over the past few seasons. It normally does not happen overnight.

Despite me not agreeing with you or in fact Michael. Lets agree that opinions differ, sometimes widely and stop this Kopite nonsense along with other abuse, I have seen enougth of that over the last few months, in fact more than enougth for this and many seasons to come.

Jeez, but some people are hard to please. You can only beat what is put infront of you.Gravesen: as previous post said, yes he tried to do too much, mainly coz the other dross he was playing with couldn’t do anything, Gemmill etc. and my own jibe was look how well he plays for denmark, backwhen they had a semi decent team.Everybody else seems to get a 2nd (or 3rd or 4th) chance, Beattie, AvdM etc. so give him a chance.

You must have the worst case ever of ’The glass is half empty’ syndrome, not only was yours half empty but somebody had put a fag end in it as well.

For fucks sake Michael and co. We won a tricky away game yesterday and sit second in the league. It’s a hallmark of good teams to pick up 3 points even when they play badly.
Fair enough, strive ever on for improvement but also appreciate what you’ve got. 3 more bloody points, a pretty good team and some decent players [Vaughan and Cahill] still to come back.

I think what is really signifacnt is that this team now shows real character. In both our away win (from 3 games)we have taken the lead only to be pegged back before going on to win. Blackburn last week we came from behind.

Some people are only happy when they are moaning so just let them get on with it but if they sat next to you at the game then give em what for!

I picked this up from Sky Sports

THe statistics shows that we have more possesion but in terms of terrotorial advantage, Bolton had more.

Does that mean that most of our possession is in our half?

Does that also mean that our penetration ability is still lacking?

Bolton Wanderers Team Statistics Everton
1 Goals 2
0 1st Half Goals 1
5 Shots on Target 7
5 Shots off Target 4
2 Blocked Shots 5
11 Corners 6
9 Fouls 11

1 Yellow Cards 3
0 Red Cards 0
71.8 Passing Success 74.7

Alan, first lesson of posting here is that when Everton win they are worldbeaters and Moyes the best manager in the club’s history. When they lose you write anything complimentary at your peril.
Please don’t ever take the opposite tack and write it as YOU see it.you are not allowed to have a differing opinion or you’re a Kopite and a gobshite!

Bolton may only be average but we still beat them. They are never an easy side to play against. I thought our performance was good and the style of the first goal proof that we can create goals from nothing. We are not the finished article but we are better prepared now than we?ve ever been. COYB

Good job where not sitting bottom of the league then where 2nd.. ya know..!Yeah we had a few problems yesterday but we could of easily been sitting 20th now..And then there would be problems..As for Gravesen thought it did ok and not bad for player that cost nothing..

36   Posted 02/09/2007 at 11:54:48

An over-critical post but do agree some of the comments were over the top given Bolton’s poor record this season.I thought we played better football than usual but it could so easily have gone the other way.Problems persist up front where Johnson can’t hit a barn door and Yacubu contributed nothing but his goal.Suspect that wont be enough to spare him extra training under Moyes.
Len Massie
37   Posted 02/09/2007 at 12:00:23

Totally agree with Ken Meredith.Yacubu failed to fulfill his defensive duties but Moyes will soon see to that.Look what he did for Beattie who, by the time he left Everton, was the best defensive centre forward in the Prem. There’s more to forward play than scoring goals, you know!
Joe Clitherow
38   Posted 02/09/2007 at 11:43:40

No away game in the Premiership is easy, and to be able to dig in and keep going and get a result in the last minute shows great resilience. The side is improving, as is Moyes. Last season against Spurs he was crucified - and I was in the crowd showing my displeasure as much as anyone. Perhaps he has learned from that, or perhaps he just didn?t have confidence in his side?s holding ability, and maybe he was right all along.

Let?s see this as it is:

Bolton are a struggling side this season as they try and change their play, but they are still a side that finished in the European slots last year. Everton are improving still, and are integrating new players which takes time. We?ve won 3 out of 5 for God?s sake!!

And for jimmy hoffa who is trying to extract meaning out of statistics, then I?ll help you: Look at the first line of them, the one with ?Goals? in - you don?t have to go down any further.
Peter Singer
39   Posted 02/09/2007 at 12:22:54

Jimmy, we were also second best to Spurs in both possession and territorial advantage. Strange, isn’t it?

Imagine what the numbers show if you play fast attacks and counterattacks, while digging in when on the back foot, letting the opposition pass the ball around in your half, but forcing them outwards.

But you get the very same figures when you’re really poor.
Clive Thornton
40   Posted 02/09/2007 at 12:43:59

If we are going to be critical, you need to look at Baines’positioning for the Bolton goal.He left Anelka with the freedom of the area to thunder in that shot.Thought in style and build he looks very Naysmithesque!
Wayne Smyth
41   Posted 02/09/2007 at 12:28:09

Ben Maeers, I?ll respond to your statements piecemeal:

1) Enjoyed the victory but thought we were still lacking in midfield.

Agree.

2) Arteta is very ordinary away from the worshiping home crowd.

You mean like at Spurs? Give the guy a break. Every player goes through a less than stellar patch, and he was played for most of the game on the wrong side of the pitch.

3) Graveson is hardly an improvement on Carsley.

They are different types of players; and in any case Gravesen is always showing for the ball and is capable of holding on to it and passing it to feet, so I call BS. The only criticism you can level at Gravesen IMO, is that he is a short term solution.

4) Moyes should have sorted the Manny deal in May not waited until last week.

He didn?t have the money in May. Once the money was in place in August he did try to sign him. Dont think you can blame Moyes for the signing not going through.

Given a few days to find a replacement, Gravesen is the best I think we could have hoped for.

5) The team is still one dimensional and will get murdered against the Big Boys-especially........

This is the same team that took 4 points off Arsenal and the RS last season, we were unlucky away at Chelsea and Newcastle to get draws, and until Turners mistake at home to Man U, it was looking good there too.

Given that the side has been strengthened considerably since, I think that providing Moyes isn?t overly negative in his team selection, we dont have that much to fear from those clubs who have spent many times what we have in the last few seasons.

In fairness, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but this is beyond the pail. I’d like to see you stood amongst the joyous Evertonians yesterday at the Reebok and spout your drivel. You’d be either very brave or just plain stupid and I suspect its the latter.

43   Posted 02/09/2007 at 13:10:37

Gravesen was exactly what we needed yesterday. The trouble is that people make snap judgements on players and then stick to them whatever evidence is put in front of their eyes. Yakubu has played one game, scored a goal and you?ve already written him off. We don?t need comment like this - it?s brainless and pointless.

Sky have just highlighted the Baines error, playing it over and over. But he is different class to Naysmith (and Pistone)although I would rate Valente on par with him.But it’s all nit-picking,we won ffs so let’s enjoy the next fortnight-there will be plenty of opportunities to be miserable later in the season!
Paul Gladwell
45   Posted 02/09/2007 at 13:18:00

Beattie left us as the best defensive centre forward! well thats refreshing to know eh.
Yakubu did nothing apart from score!
What are these people on?
To be fair he looked unfit but his hold up play and distribution was top draw and his vision on a few passes he pulled off in the first half was too.
I am sure his fitness will come soon but will these people fucking shut up for once, I have been a serious critic of Moyes sometimes too hasty to call for his head but he is learning all the time and if he left now the club and its fans would shit bricks, no one more so than the tit who owns the club and whos bacon has been saved numerous times by Moyes.
We have had one of the hardest starts to the season and yet we are second try enjoying it for once.

46   Posted 02/09/2007 at 14:08:45

I was surprised at Alan’s condemnation of the team Moyes sent out but one or two points have emerged to back him up.The manager apparently gave the team-and Lescott in particular-a right going over at half-time.He was clearly not enraptured at the quality of our midfield and withdrew both Carsley and Pinaer earlier than expected. He was also anxious to praise AJ rather than Yakubu for the first goal and the Sky feature clearly shows Baines’culpability for the Bolton goal.
All in all, I suspect Moyes was far less happy with th performance than some of the glib buggers who inhabit this site!
Mark Griffiths
47   Posted 02/09/2007 at 15:05:12

I thought we played well in parts and crap in parts, but overall in the grand scheme of things, we are moving in the right direction.

Moyes knows he needs creativity in midfield as he clearly demonstrated in trying to sign Manny, I am sure he has his eye on the Jan window. Arteta does look a bit out of sorts, but he was class against Wigan and Tottenham and he cannot be a world beater every game!!

The one i am a likttle worried about is AJ, I think his confidence is very low when shooting, which I think is probably because he has not had that many chances due to him working his bollocks off for the team, but when one-on-one he has lost that sharpness I must admit.

One final tghing, MOTD are twats!!! We were on after a crap Utd match and our analysis and debate after the game from messres Shearer and Hansen was a joke, but of course the shite get a 10 minute debate with slobber running down everyone's mouths, fair play to them, they look good, but they were playing the whipping boys of the Prem.

Let's all get real ? Part 2

Okay, we should not be carried away, or at least that?s what we are told. Let's then examine the facts: we are sitting 2nd in the Premier League although we have played four top 10 teams from the last season and scored 8 goals. Meanwhile, Man Utd played only three times against top 10 opposition and they have 2 points less and only scored 3 goals. Chelsea played also against only 3 top 10 opponents and have scored only 7 goals but they have a game in hand and one of their goals came from a dubious penalty. Liverpool's only top 10 opponents were Chelsea; their other victories are against 2 promoted teams and the struggling Villa. Arsenal played only 2 top 10 opponents and scored 7 goals but lets not forget that they got penalty in 3 of those 4 games?

All other teams that were around us are struggling at the moment: Tottenham, Reading, Bolton. Man City and Newcastle are showing some promise but City were struggling against Arsenal and Man Utd and Newcastle are yet to face some serious team. As you can see, we are keeping the tempo with the big boys but in the part 1 Alan Middleton says ?we shall be taken apart by the "big boys".?

Now last season against Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool we lost only 3 games ? Chelsea beat us with late goals at Goodison Park and we were denied win at Bridge by the referee; Man Utd won at Goodison thanks to a stupid mistake made by Turner, prior to that they were completely shut out of the game and we were only taken apart at Old Trafford where we lost 3-0. So, of those 8 games we were a match for the ?big boys? in 7 of them ? hardly a shameful performance and in a table consisting only of those 3 teams we would have been third ? achievement by all standards.

I have been with Michael the whole of last season, crying out for more decent football and not the hoofball and negative play.

Now I am happy with the way Everton play. Still some hoofball there, but much better than the previous few seasons, and talk about negative football? I didn’t see it on Saturday.

And 1 point behind last season? Is it that important? Does that mean we are going backward? Ahem... I thought there are 38 games in one season...
