Wessels - Is it just me or ....

Having watched the lad training at half-time during the Blackburn match and again during the pre-match warm-up at Bolton yesterday, I would not trust him with a back-pass! His ball control, particularly on his left foot, looks comical.
I know goalkeepers are not footballers as such, but more and more these days you have to have some rudimentary skills with your feet! Wessels doesn't seem to have any! Anyone else noticed this? Was he the first team goalie at Cologne when he came to the end of his contract?

Hardly seems fair to judge him on this evidence, but did anyone else notice that the OS described Yakubu and Gravesen as Everton’s 4th and 5th major signings of the summer, which seems very dismissive toward Wessels, unless I’m missing something.

Not judging - he might be a fantastic goalie. Just commenting on something that hit me right between the eyes. Probably watch these things, ’cos I used to be a keeper.

Well, bit of topic but i seem to remember a certain Per Krøldrup that gave himself away during warm-ups. It suddenly became evident that the boy couldn’t head a ball.
Could it be that Wessel is the same kinda brand?

Obviously, we can’t judge him with too much confidence before we see him play, but I’m wondering about the motivation of his arrival. What kind of message is this for Iain Turner? And Ruddy, who surely must have thought he was one notch up the rank as Wrighty left.
I guess Moyes just couldn’t let go of this chance, a well-credentialed German goalie, for FREE!
My guess is he won’t play a big part in our season. I hope for Turner.

I agree Kjetil, we are supposed to have a couple of quality young keepers. Confidence breads cofidence in this game, look at AJ... the lad needs a goal and he will be magic again. Not sure that signing this new chap as No.1 competition is developing these guys, but what do I know. Give Turner a proper run in the cup games, hopefully more games than we are used to!!
However, I must say that Tim Howard has been one of Moyies best buys, having been brought up on the legend Mr Southall I am comfortable with him between the sticks, far better than that over rated waste of space we have just released.

In all fairness, Turner has looked a little shakey in the matches i’ve seen him play in, and ruddy isnt quite ready for the premiership yet. Its going to be a long season - if howard gets injured, we do at least need someone who can do a decent job and has some experience playing against quality.

Give the guy a chance, I remember watching Arteta on his debut at Southampton and he was rubbish.

Surely the idea behind Wessels is that Turner & Ruddy can now go out on loan and get some match practice.
Given the small number of reserve games we have, it seems a bit daft to leave your promising young keeper on the bench never getting to play. Send them out to lower division sides and have an experienced back up on the bench in case of injury.

Turner is injured, isn’t that why we needed to bring in extra cover? In any case, i do think he and Ruddy need more first team experience before they can be relied upon in any capacity.

I reckon ruddy should be given a chance as the understudy, he was very good as a very young keeper at cambridge (I think), did he not get player of the season not bad for an 18 yr old net minder, give the lad a chance, Turner had his and deserves the back seat for a couple of almighty fuck ups.
