New Name for Ground?
Comments (72)
Just sitting here thinking what the new ground should be called. I read somewhere The Golden Vision stadium, not sure but it does sound good. Any ideas, it would be nice if any new roads could be named after some of our legends, like Kendall way or Dean Avenue... just a thought.

Won?t it be called something like ?The Tesco Express?? We could even have above the main entrance the slogan ?Every little helps?

The name will be sold to the highest bidder, as will the stand names. There is no way the club would turn down several million pounds of income.

KW has stated that naming rights will be sold to help fund the stadium (as with: Emirates Stadium, Friends Provident St Mary’s, Reebok etc.) He also confirmed Tesco will NOT be involved in this side of things and therefore there will be no ’Every little helps stadium’ or suchlike...Phew!

I’ve never heard of actual stands being sold for naming rights, so I imagine they will be named appropriately to our liking.

I’m glad that now the vote is over and done with the debate has moved on (for most of us) to things like this.
It is fairly certain that the club are going to sell naming rights but there’s no reason whatsoever why we can’t have an ’underlying’ permanent name because the naming rights will be up for renewel every 5-10 years or so and will probably change over time. I propose ’New Goodison’ as the name of our new ground and hope we get an appropiate sponsor - not McDonalds or Tesco or any other crap like that.

I dont think we have to worry too much about having our stadium raped by tesco in terms of name. Mr. Wynness has insisted on numerous occasions that we, Everton, maintain the naming rights. I suspect it’ll be called the New Goodison (which is nice) but I dont think it’d be a bad idea to go right back to our roots and call it something along the lines of The St. Domingos Stadium. Just a thought

Just read David Torley’s suggestion for the stadium name Dixie Dean Stadium - really great idea!
Robin Byrne

Neil, I thought KW had been pretty clear on the fact that we’ll be selling the naming rights in order to fund our side of the agreement, so we wont be choosing a name ourselves. Get the romantic notions of New Goodison etc out of your head.

Maybe the ground will use a sponsor name but I would be Surprised if the stands and roads around the ground don?t have names after our legends. Or even the whole complex is not named after something connected to Everton Football club ?St Domingos?

Posted 03/09/2007 at 16:54:27
it?s always difficult to name after past heroes as this is one club that has so many.
I do think that Dixie should figure big time and to name the stadium after him would be superb. I also think that to name a stand after Rhys Jones would be a fitting memorial to an young but ardent Evertonian - we don?t need to sell them to business after all we are the people?s club

It has been made very clear by Keith ’No Plan B’ Wyness that the Knowsley People’s Club’s stadium will be named for the corporate sponsor who comes closest to paying 25 million pounds. This is partly how we are paying our end of the costs. If this means we end up playing in a stadium called the Pukka Pies Arena, Wyness won’t think about that for more than a nanosecond. So put all the sweet dreams about ’Golden Vision Stadium’ etc etc., out of your minds. I also understand that Knowsley Council is going to insist that on the website, the programs, postal address and all official references will say ’Stadium Name,’ Knowsley. Not Liverpool. Believe me, this is all just the beginning of the humiliation.

Yeah - not sure how the naming rights thing works exactly (and would be happy for someone to explain it to me)but I should imagine that it does what it says on the tin - allows the company who comes up with 25million quid the opportunity to name the stadium. So I am expecting to pay visits to the Tesco Stadium, Chang Park or the Umbro Ground. I dream for a beneficiary to come in and call it New Goodison Park or the Dean Ground or something that honours our illustrious history - but it ain’t gonna happen!

I reckon that after not being able to find a sponsor interested it will be called the ?Free Season Ticket With Each Tin of Tesco Value Beans Stadium?.

Leeds sold the naming rights for that huge stand where they put all the Tottenham fans in the 1995 semi...the gloriously named Lurpak Stand. Let?s hope we don?t follow that example: I also hate where stands have first and second names, so much better to have the Dean Stand, the Southall Stand, the Lawton End, the Latchford End....Have we ever had someone called Bell play for us?.Might need to be a bit careful there.

The Theatre of Nightmares.
If we really do move to Knowsley it will kill this club.
Tesco have another site in Liverpool BUT, they do not need to have Everton as a partner to build it.
they really have fooled everyone,
35000 eligable voters, 10000 abstained 60% of 25k means about 15,000 fans voted Yes.
The peoples club what a joke.

I thought this thread was for suggesting Ground names, not digging up the same old shite from a few weeks ago.
I presume the ground will have an underlying name it will revert back to after the initial naming rights deal runs out, a la Ashburton Grove.
New Goodison sounds good to me.

Steve Sweeney for Fucks Sake let it go. We voted to move as we thought it was the best for the club. Democracy means that you have the right not to vote as well as to vote. Enough fans voted for the move and I was one of them.
Personaly as long as the new stadium looks good has an atmosphere like Goodison, and generates money for the club I dont care what they call it.
Now lets get on with the season and get behined the team for Fucks Sake

Whoever buys the naming rights WE will call the new Stadium what we like and it will stick! As for the name of any new road...Goodison Road...all sorted. And while we are at it,all along that road we can have statues on pedestals of all the legends, Dixie, Tommy Lawton, Roy Vernon, The Golden vision, Alan Ball, Bob Latchford, Duncan McKenzie, Brian Labone, Tommy Gravesen (???)et al.
Ok,so the Club got its way in the vote and if there is going to be a new stadium in Kirkby then let us put the pressure on the club to make it a memorable place. Tony Marsh thinks it is going to be a cowshed. Let us make Everton realize that we will not accept that. Oh, and by the way, dismantling the Winslow brick by brick and rebuilding it opposite the front door might be a good start!

I always think the best name for a stadium is a one-word name, especially if you can put ’The’ in front of it. i cant recall any in britain but there are loads in europe and around the world; for example
"The Riazor" - Deportivo
"The Mestalla" - Valencia
Ive also thought "Ibrox" to be quite an intimidating name also.

Matt Willey,
How do we do that? Easy. Any concerted effort to insist on a certain standard for a new stadium would get more support than KEIOC...probably even a majority! All you have to do is stop living in the past and look to the future.
The original post was an attempt to look toward the future but most of the responses have been opportunistic attempts to reignite an old (lost!) argument. As somebody else said, ’the opposition will not go far away’. I fear not. I fear not.How tiresome. How fucking tiresome!

Maybe they can follow TV. Name it the "Whatever name" Stadium sponsored by "Sponsor Name". That way we get a stadium name and the sponsor gets their credit
Louis Huglin
Posted 04/09/2007 at 00:24:21
This is descending into immature jibes and ill thought out rants - stop. Some of us support the Kirkby plan, and the rest of us (me included) don’t. The name of the stadium is irrelevant as long as it brings in enough money for the club anyway.
Personally, I feel that calling it New Goodison would be an insult to the grand old lady, who has grown, changed and evolved with the club through the years. How can the Goodison name be applied to a quick-fix kit-stadium? If the architectural design changes radically - from the bland and boring current computer mock-ups to something unique and representative of the heritage of the club - then maybe the Goodison name could be used. I mean, obviously, that we would call it New Goodison, its real name will end up being some corporate sponsor, and there is nothing wrong with that if it brings 25 million in!
PS - To those who think democracy was fair and representative in this process, please consider the many diehard fans who should have voted and were not allowed to by the constrictions. I am a student - can I afford to buy a season ticket and thus the right to have my say in the matter? Course not!
(I understand why some of you have voted yes - this club does indeed need to move on, improve its financial situation and its status before it is left behind by the "bigger" (ie richer) clubs. My only plea is that we do not grab at the first mediocre offer - we are a club of proud history, legends and records, and we deserve the best: Nil Satis Nisi Optimum).
Gerard Madden
Posted 04/09/2007 at 01:37:18
Louis - you have this nasty habit of saying ’some of you voted yes’, I think you’ll find that out of all those eligable to vote only a quarter of (or ’some’) evertonians bothered to vote ’no’.
Steve Sweeney
Posted 04/09/2007 at 01:27:46
Mark Perry- I believe that the move to Kirkby is wrong, I have chosen my corner, I recall a democratically elected government introducing poll tax- the people didn’t like it and that government was soon ousted.
Just because a majority of those who voted said yes does not mean it is the right move. As has been said this issue will divide our fan base for years to come.
When Kenwright takes his 30 pieces of silver and his Platinum Tesco club card and you are watching the blues in a stadium with thousands of empty seats and your grandson wants to support his local team don’t come crying.
And I promise I will try not to post again on this issue but I really do feel strongly that it is the wrong direction for the club to go, and yes I do know that we need a new stadium but not in Kirkby.
