Will we win a trophy in my lifetime?

Comments (23)

As a 23-year-old devoted Evertonian, I am aware of the club's achievements and proud of our history but, with the increasing competitive inbalance in the Premier League, and the fact that we were the last team outside the big four to win the FA Cup back in 1995, I am beginning to doubt if we will ever win a trophy in my lifetime? I know this is a pessimistic outlook, but as much as I support Moyes, I cannot recall one decent cup run in the last 5 years, and I would trade a trophy of any sort for a top 6 finish.

I’m 23 too mate. I’m just as worried as you about the way Sky tv inparticular has had this effect on the football leagues. Maybe you should be happy for that trophy in 1995 (that was in your lifetime after all!!).

I do think the start of this season has looked promising for ’bridging the gap’. Although I must say I think a lot of ’the big 4’ speak is media (and again sky inparticular) hype.

couldn’t agree more with the Big Four Comment.Let’s face it Chelsea are NOT a big club, they are just wealthy. They have no history no pedigree. As my long lamented mum used to say "fur coat and no Knickers!"

I ask the same question all the time, not for me but for my son, he is 16 and with us living in Jersey for the past 20 years, where most fans are manufactured Manure, RS and at the moment Chelsea. He was born a blue, like me and does actually go the games when possible. I was supporting the blues since I was was young enough to remember and it wasn’t until 84 when we won the cup, this was the time of total domination by the RS not just in England but Europe as well, but the trophy’s did come. Today I am afraid is different, we have the history, the fan base but one thing missing is the £££££ and without that it is going to be hard to even win a domestic cup. But you never know in 1983 who would have thought we would be champions within two seasons and ECWC to. So keep the faith it could be worse look at Newcastle and Spurs.

I always remember stating in the bad days in school when them fuckers won everything that things go round in circles and was proved right I left school in 1985 with the last laugh.
Alex Ferguson not too long ago said football goes round in circles the big clubs always comeback and I think he meant us in that statement, think we will at least win the FA cup in the not too distant future, just a shame we wont be outside St Georges hall on statues celebrating another little bit of the souless future that awaits us

Moyes doesn’t do cups, does he?

I hope this is just because Mpyes thought our squad has not been sufficient to compete in more than one competition and now he is willing to have a go in the cups.

If you talking about league, FA Cup or UEFA I think the answer is no, we are no longer a decent cup team and unless we have a massive injection of cash nothing will change. It really depresses me though a club with so much history, probably the 4th most successful club in English football, 4th biggest fan base, most seasons in top flight football and founder member of the league and we start every season knowing if we finish a poxy sixth we are supposed to be grateful what the fuck is going on, welcome to football in the 21st century were money rules and without a 50 million quid transfer kitty your looking at fighting for that top 6 its bollocks

My first post here, but just wanted to add... Look at what Seville are doing now, Won the Uefa cup twice and are now a force in La Liga, and europe. They dont have bags of cash, like Madrid or Barca but have slowly built a quality side. Im sure you would agree that La Liga is as strong a league as the prem when you look at Madrid, Barca, Valencia...

Keep the faith... It will happen soon.

Being an old git of 54, I remember 4 league championships, 3 FA Cups and a Cup Winners Cup. I too wonder if my 18 year old fanatical son will see the Blues win a trophy (he just remembers the ’95 Cup win) but my bet is he will for two reasons:

a) certain clubs will implode - e.g. Chelsea when the money dries up b) the league will be forced to bring in wage caps / restrictions on imports etc to keep the interest going and level the playing field.

May not happen for a while, though. Meanwhile, savour each win as it comes. I’d prefer to win the League but I was pretty damned happy last Saturday at Bolton along with 4,000 others.

I am only at the age where the last thing we won was FA cup, and I was too young too know what happened.

But you need to lighten up, of course we will win something, I for one think in the next 3 years we will win the league, and I think this season we will win something. Come on, we for once hav talent all round the park! well close enough!

I?m 21 mate, the progress we?ve made over the last few years is great and older people might laugh at a comment like this, but this is the greatest everton squad i?ve known (in my match-going life), however I still doubt I?ll ever see everton win another major trophy

I have a great respect for our younger fans in bad times we older blues have past glories to re-live hopefully this money is god phase will come to an end with bankruptcy beckoning the rs chelsea and manure as I dont think any of the owners of these clubs are true fans in the sense of old school chairmen and will not take failure well then we will be there waiting to take our rightful place

When I started it was 53/54 season. In the years prior and after, except for promotion we had nowt to crow about. Then came the magnificent FA cup of 66.

Patience!

Moyes rates the league above anything else & we haven?t had the strength in depth to make a concerted push for the cups as well as establish ourselves at the top end of the league.

Only a week or so ago Moyes came out and said he has depth for the first time in his reign.

Hopefully this means we make a good run in to of the 3 cups we?re involved in.

Come on now Gareth. The year you were born we won the league & won it again when you were 3. And that’s not even mentioning our European success. Obviously you were out of your tree on Cow & Gate or Milupa at the time.

Seriously, however, Everton were pretty shite up until then & nobody saw the success of the mid-eighties coming.
Keep the faith.

Is it true that UEFA want the 4th champions league spot to go to the FA cup winner? This might take emphasis off the league and onto the cup for teams like ourselves, and also could shake up the ’Big Four’

Additionally, in my opinion the ’big four’ phenomena is a load of bollox, its not long since Leeds and Newcastle were consistently up there, above the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea. Add to that we finished 4th a couple of seasons ago and the gap between 4th and 5th is generally quite slim (2 points 05/06, 3 points 04/05, 4 points 03/04) etc.

Yes those 4 spend more money than the rest of us but they’re not widening the gap in terms of points accumulation and there is a distinct opportunity for teams like Evertons, Spurs and Newcastle that they’ve got a decent gaffer, to challenge the ’slightly more succesful in very recent years - 4’

The "big 4" are not untouchable. I would also be very surprised if Arsenal have spent more than Spurs or Newcastle in recent years. It is not always down to how much money a team has. Hell, we went from 17th to 4th while spending only 2.5M We then spent about 20M to go back down to 11th.
It’s not just how much you have, it’s how you spend it, and what you do with the players you have bought.
If league placings were decided on how much clubs spend, Arsenal probably wouldn’t even be in the UEFA cup.
I think it is just an easy cop out to say the top 4 are so far ahead we can’t catch them. We can, and we will.

I’m 21, and 1995 will live long in my memory. I went to school with Man Utd & Spurs fans, I’m from London, strangely. We didn’t see that coming.

But I agree that Moyes is getting it right slowly, and finishing fourth is some achievement. How else has? The thing that bothers me is the Spurs chatter about them walking into the top four - reality bites.

Did anyone really think Spurs could touch Arsenal, even Liverpool? Not in a million years, with that board bothering the playing and coaching staff.

I have faith. What’s the point in believing otherwise?

......my start was utter incomprehension how we lost the ’68 cup final to West Brom (about the only televised games in those days).....but it got better, real fast- so keep the faith....

Apart from death and taxes there are few certainties other than the certain knowledge that there is uncertainty and that change is inevitable :-) I firmly believe EFC is moving up in the fottballing world and that league and cup successes are very likely in the coming seasons (as long as we give wholehearted support to the team on and off the pitch). NSNO..eventually!

I’m reasonably hopeful that we might even see a trophy by the end of the decade. We’ve got something decent going on at the club at the moment, built (fingers crossed) on what appears to be a sounder long-term base than in the past.

On a wider basis, I do think that big 4 is exaggerated by the media. The gap has closed a bit, it seems, between the "best of the rest" and those clubs - and longer term I think there’s a very realistic possibility of all this random foreign ownership going tits up. One of the reasons I’m more than happy on that sense that we’ve failed to attract significant (ownership-level) foreign investment by someone with no links to Everton and no real interest or acknowledgment of our history.

We’ll definately win something in your lifetime, thats bearing in mind I dont know you and you might have some awful illness; you dont do you?

Also take into account accidental death - you might get run over or hit by falling scoffolding before the end of the week.

I’m 34 and I’m very confident we’ll win something in my lifetime; even if I’m dead before I’m 40 as predicted by some people who know me!
