Transfer cap

Comments (6)

Football has now become a multi-billion-pound global industry, a massive business where greed and power rule and these so-called top four will become bigger and stronger. This in turn will increase their power and thus enable them to dictate policy, the G14 already do.

Now fast forward 5-10 years...

  • Where will this leave clubs like Everton FC?
  • Will we see the creation of a European breakaway league?
  • Will clubs like Everton be pushing themselves to the financial limits to try and get in that European League?
Things might look rosy now with all the money in the game but this type of money and power will bring casualties (eg, Leeds). I would like to see a transfer cap introduced, spread out over 5 years, 20 million in the first year, 25 million in the second year and so on. I can't see another way of dealing with these monopolies, and that?s what they are, they monopolize the power, thus creating a unfair competitive market.

I know Sky brought a lot of money to the table this year but if you consider we turned over £50 million, while the clubs who finished in the top four grossed £150 million plus, if this carries on, and it's not rocket science, winning the title will become near impossible for teams like Everton.

what planet you on tommy, would you train all week only to be told your not playing and not getting any wages this would kill football, the only way it can be stoped is with wage caps and transfer caps then the leauge would even out and wouldnt be so predictable.

As well as transfer caps I think something else that would help equalise the situation would be a squad cap. There is one for the world cup, uefa cup, and the champions league why not for the premiership.

I don’t agree with this idea or the reasons behind it. If Everton were one of the current top 4, would you be making the same argument? The top 4 is not set in stone, never has been, never will be. Do you not remember we broke into it just a couple of years ago? Newcastle were a regular top 4 side just a few years ago too. The money that all clubs are getting from Sky (and takeovers) will help balance out the extra that the clubs are getting from the champions league.
Also, don’t forget that in general, footballers are greedy. If they are prevented from getting huge wages in England, they will just go elsewhere (Spain, Italy etc), not to the lesser lights of the EPL

Don’t know if you seen the interview with Garry O’Connor who signed for Birmingham from Moscow.
Basically he said that the basic salary in Russia was really poor (£16k springs to mind), but the win bonuses were amazing. It was along the lines of £100k for a win, £250k to win a derby (Think there was six in Moscow per season) and £500k to win a trophy.
I think performance/results related pay for the whole club could be a good introduction to the worldwide game, not just the Premier League.
I would say that the basic salary could be a bit higher than Russia(£250k pa?), but the win bonuses a bit less than Russia.
