Naming of new stadium

Comments (23)

Given that the prospect of a stadium move is a fact of life in today's English Premiership, albeit a painful one, can we at least all agree on a suitable name for the new venue? Maybe something that draws reference to the club's illustrious past and reflects on the notion of a revered institution of excellence. The School of Science, for example.

Why draw reference to our illustrious past Micheal. We are leaving it all behind when we go mate. Our history counts for nothing say the majority of our support so why harp back to it once we leave the city.We cant have it both ways.We either go and make a fresh start in Kirkby<>with what will amount to a new Everton or stay in the city and >carry on our historical traditions. What ever has gone before at Goodison Park or in other parts of Liverpool will be of no relevance.Turn our backs on the city and we turn our backs on>the past.No one can argue any different

Right, that’ll be why I stopped being an Everton supporter when the family moved to Newcastle. It’s why I still tell everyone I’m a Scouser despite my Geordie accent.

Turned my back on the history you see. It’s an inevitable consequence of moving.

My arse.

Of course our new ground will have naming rights issued but there’s no reason why it can’t have an underlying permanent name. The new Arsenal ground is in fact ’Ashburton Grove’ but they’ve decided to issue naming rights to Emirates Airlines.

I think ’New Goodison Park’ would be fine for our new ground - or how about the ’Dixie Dean Stadium’.

’No one can argue any different’

Hhmmm, the majority might like to ’argue’ that point Tony.

I’m sure it’ll get a name that belies the traditions of Everton, and for Tony to say we’re leaving it all behind and it means nothing isn’t true at all. Like Gerald says, the naming rights mean it’ll be named by the sponsors but it’ll also have another name thats relevant to the club.

With respect Tony, its time to let go of the past and look to the future mate.

We could have our own name and a naming right put into the name of the ground...f or example Southampton?s ground is called the Friends Provident St Mary?s Stadium yet everyone knows it as St Mary?s. So we can still get the cash that Big Keith craves for the name and have our own name as well.

Tony, a couple of questions:

1. What basis is there for your argument? It seems like an arbitrary assertion of opinion to me.

2. Do you consider Everton to have existed since 1878 or 1892?

3. Where do you consider Kirkby to be, in terms of the identity of its people, as evidenced by, lets say, the football teams they support?

4. Is there anything about Everton Football Club that you actually like?

5. Why were you on here earlier complaining that it was someone else’s fault that you couldn’t hold your own in a pub argument against some reds?

6. In relation to 5, have you ever heard the terrace chant containing the words ’...we don’t care what the red shite say, what the fuck do we care’, and if so, why are you so upset about what some of them said to you in the pub?

I’m a compassionate man Tony, and I don’t want to insult you like so many of the others, I want to help you and make you feel better, because somehow, you support the greatest club in the world, yet seem to be nothing but thoroughly miserable about it all of the time.

I think it?s been made clear by Keith Wyness that the naming rights will be sold for around 25 million (he hopes) in order to pay for our end of the KPC?s stadium. So all these romantic notions about New Goodison and Alex Young and School of Science Stadium etc are daydreams. It will be the (YourAdHere) Stadium, Knowsley. The best we can hope for is that it won?t be some crappy name, like the AstraZenecka Stadium or the GlaxoSmithKline Arena. ?Passion at the Pukka Pies? doesn?t have the same ring as ?Goodison Glory? and ?Goals at Goodison,? does it?

Tony,

you cant just wipe history away simply because we’re moving up the road - that’s nonsense. When I moved from Liverpool to Wallasey I certainly did not forget who I was or where I came from. It’s the same principle. I dont think any of us who voted yes to Kirkby were voting to turn our backs on our history or to say that it was irrelevant. I would hazard a guess at saying the majority of us thought it was the best option on the table. If you dont like it then, tough.

Tony (Marsh) is of course right. We are all twisting his words. None of us truely understand things but him and to think anything otherwise would be to argue differently which he has already stated is impossible.

He is right because he says he’s right.

When was the last time Everton FC played in Everton? Why are we called Everton when we play in Walton? Because it is part of our history. We have not had to change our name because we have been playing at Goodison Park in Walton for so long. Why do we have to change our name now, and abandon all our history now? Oh, I forgot, Tony Marsh cannot be questioned, he’s always correct.

Tony I know where your coming from mate, may the lord have mercy on there soles in 10 years time when theres 15000 of them, watching us in a relegation dogfight.

Okay Rich, because playing outside of the city boundaries has really doomed Man. United hasn’t it. And what if the boundary moves again and includes our stadium, as it did to include our current home? That move to Goodison really doomed Everton didn’t it. Everton are finally on the right track and could realistically win something this year and the years to follow, but you want to talk about us being in a relegation fight in 10 years time. Is it really that impossible for you people to not look for negatives? It must be killing you now that Everton have a solid competitive team again.

What happened to the original question?

Ignore Mr Marsh. Remember "never argue with an idiot because they drag you down to their level and beat you with experience."

ON TO THE QUESTION - How about something like "Dixieland", or simply "St Domingoes". Then we could say "I’m going to worship at St Domingoes on Saturday."

One good thing, it means there will be no more pessimism when we move because we would have left it all behind. No more moaning about Moyes tactics because they are all in the past. No more whinging about BK and KW because we will have left it all behind.
It will be a fresh start and we have no baggage to carry with us. A clean slate for everyone. I like it

Turn our backs on the city and we turn our backs on>the past.No one can argue any different

Barry, "Dixieland" are you havin a laugh?
Typical suggestion from one of those who voted yes, why dont you go the whole hog mate and see if you can book your family fortnight there in advance.
Unlike Old Trafford, the new ground will be situated in the middle of nowhere, on a fuckin retail park, Bolton mark two.
The future may be bright for you but it aint got fuck all to do with the history of our club. Dixieland indeed !

Old Trafford is in the middle of nowhere, plus it’ll be nothing like reebok - more like jjb in robin park. They might even open an evolution night club! Smash

Mark, have you not frequented any of the clubs outside of OT or salford quays mate,I think there is thriving community around the place and all within walking disatnce.

20   Posted 06/09/2007 at 12:27:38

Steve, there’s a community in Kirkby too!

The new stadium wont be in the middle of nowhere will it, really? It will be in the middle of a re-generated town centre. It has nothing to do with a ’retail park’.

Get a grip folks.

Hi Lee, no disrespect mate but theres Town and theres towns.
I might be wrong here (apolagies if so) but my take from Tesco is that they definately are going to develop a fully fledged retail park on the proposed land.
That being the case, I fail to see how it can offer anyone a sense of community. Anyway I degress, the dye is cast for now.

Call it what you like, but if they put the name inside the stadium across the seats you will get a great view of it on matchdays.
