I can't believe the hiding AJ seems to be getting at the moment. Only 12 months ago he was our saviour, nowadays he seems to be the cause of all our ills.
Looking at the big picture however, I am happy that he is copping a hiding. We used to whinge about players of the calibre of Pembridge or Radzinski and more recently Naysmith or Wright. Now we are complaining that we are stuck with a current England international.
These are indeed heady days when we turn down a record bid ($20M) for a player who has no value to our team whatsoever. I would say if having Andy Johnson in our starting 11 is our biggest problem, then we are going to have a bloody great season.

I'm equally bemused, Alisdair. The number of goals AJ indirectly created through his tireless running and the winning of free kicks around the opposition box last season was vital to our sixth-place finish. And it's not like he's missing sitters week in, week out ? he had one of the highest goals-to-chances ratios last season, didn't he?

i don’t understand all this johnson bashing, its like people need a scapegoat whoever plays, hibbert was targeted and was rightfully dropped because he has been poor this season, and now its johnsons turn for some people, if johnson is contributing assists and were winning then thats fine by me and he always works his socks off.
i hope he scores against man utd because until he does score people will carry on slating him.

Lyndon,
Further to a comment I posted last night about strikers rates of conversion, do you happen to know what AJ’s ratio of goals to chances was?Was it anywhere near 12%?

Not only AJ, take a look at Howard. I mean, he conceded in every game we’ve played this season. I suggest we bring back Westerveld on a season-long loan.

I think the reason for people knocking him is the way he always takes an extra touch and the chance goes, plus his finishing isn’t exactly van Nistelrooy-esque, but then again if it was we’d be looking at a £40m striker...

I know andy from school one thing you wont see the lad do is drop his head hes a hard worker lest we forget this is the same lad you lot were lauding after his double against the kopshites last year, he will come good maybe not twenty goals but 10-12 or so, and will get many more for yak who will benefit from ajs unselfishness.

Right. Howard dropped??? Are you crazy! He’s been our best player this season, he saved us against Blackburn and some crucial savess in the other mathces!
Personally Johnson is a good player but nothing more, yes he wont get goals this season really because he will be doin the hard work, but when he gets a chance he never puts them away!!
Vaughan is a much better player and when he is fit, he should be played instead of Johnson.
1. Yakubu
2. Vaughan
3. Johnson
4.Anichebe
5. McFadden
Anichebe is a player you can bring on to make the defenders liven up, or you can play him for 60mins and rough them up and then bring AJ on.
Beat United 2-0 Yakubu and Baines

Which Premier League playr has had more shots n goal this season than any other?
I give you, Mr Andrew Johnson. Still hasn’t bagged one but his contribution to the team makes him worth hiw weight in gold.
Any AJ bashing is totally unjust and people should look at the bigger picture, then reign their necks in.

I do have to say its too early to even class Vaughan as even a good player yet..Vaughan is at the moment a bonus..He has come through the ranks and scored a few goals but we cannot get carried away by thinking he will be a regular this season or even next for that matter..He is only 19 and by the time he is 22 we will have a better idea if he is the real deal or not..Yes he looks good but then didnt Cadamarteri and Branch?. I remember after Cadamarteri’s derby match goal thinking that we had the next England striker for years to come but his career and personal life went tits up..JV will not and cannot be judged at 19..For the here and now AJ and Yakubu are the men..Face it
