Reality Check

Comments (8)

Let me start by saying I don?t want to be all doom and gloom but people on here need to take a reality check.

We have one of the best Everton squads in recent memory and we have broken our transfer record in the process of trying to inject quality into the squad. But the best Everton squad in recent memory doesn't necessarily mean we are destined for the Champions League again. We have had one good performance this season against a lethargic Spurs and we followed that up with two stinkers against Reading and Blackburn. As well as our investment, other teams have improved as well so in effect are we that much better suddenly?

This season is going to be a Battle Royale with the likes of Blackburn, Newcastle, Man City and Spurs just to get a European spot. With Euro matches midweek and Prem matches at the weekend, who knows how we are going to cope? Will we be able to maintain our competitive pressing football for a full 90 minutes at 100% following a midweek Euro match? Despite our investment, our squad is still small so if injuries strike we could really struggle.

We have great reason to be optimistic this season but let's take it one match at a time and if we are still in the top 4 after Xmas then let's start dreaming again. But until then, let's not set ourselves up for a fall.

Dan, fair comments mate and I agree with you. Whilst we have improved others around us have too, so it should be an interesting season. Hopefully whilst we have a similar quality of player on the pitch to the teams you mentioned, I think the team spirit at Everton could give us a proverbial 12th man which other teams may not have. Hopefully that can help us push for a European spot.

By the way if your in Newcastle Upon Tyne as opposed to Under Lyme, you may be interested to know that the Academy are playing in Longbenton at 1pm tomorrow, should be a good chance to see some of the stars of tomorrow! I’ll be there if you or any other Everton fans living in the North East fancy it.

You’re dead right Dan, expectations are unrealistically high at the moment. It’s understandable in many ways though, because we have spent so many years going nowhere that when we appear to be going somewhere we think we are already there! Does that make sense?

Totally agree Mark.

People’s joy/anger on this site seems specific to the previous game’s result.

Where as we do have competition for Europe, I don’t expect Newcastle to hang around and Man City also.

4th however is up for grabs and is a possibility but ONLY dependant on the big 4’s form.
Unfortunately the Arse don’t seem to be suffering post Henry, and Liverpool are looking consistant... darnit.

We could finish 4th, we could finsh 8th.
But we shall see.

Who said we where going to get into the Champions league? From what I have seen there are more doom and gloomers than optimistc fans.

A legarthic Spurs? Spurs played well against us and all they were missing was that final ball whereas we took our chances and played some decent stuff. What you have got to realise is that we have not had our best team on the pitch yet. We havent had the likes of Cahill, Vaughan and the new boys Jagielka, Pienaar, Yakubu, Gravesen and Baines on the pich together yet so we dont actually know good or bad we are going to be.

Are squad isnt that small. We have atleast 25 players who are more than capable of doing a job and then the likes of Vidarsson, Boyle, Ruddy and Jutkiewicz on the fringe so I dont think our squads in a bad situation. The quality has definatly improved thats for sure and as Moyes commented we actually have a bench that can change a game this season.

I think we need to keep our feet on the ground but I dont think anyone is getting over optimistic. The Premiership is going to be very copetitive this year so the players have to be up for it.

Why not reach for the skies ? We shouldn t accept that we can t compete as we ve definately spent well. Remember our results against the top 4 last season where we rarely lost. We have a strong, young hungry squad full of internationals and a pot to spend in January and plenty of time to decide on the right target/s so I feel we are right to be optimistic. COYB !

I agree with you in a way.. maybe not 4th.. but 5th is well within our reach. We’ve beaten Spurs already.. the only two teams I can see challenging us are Blackburn and Villa.

Manchester City have a great squad but it will take them a year to gel together and get good.

Newcastle were never that good.. really.. their midfield’s lacking in my opinion... I don’t think they’ll do that well to be honest.

I reckon we’ve got a better squad than Blackburn and Villa... so let’s carry on beating teams.. and who knows.. we may get 4th!
