Poser for Moyes

McFadden scores yet another good goal at international level. Should Moyes now consider the possibility of pairing Yakubu and McFadden up front and playing Johnson on the left flank? I'm not suggesting this should be a permanent line-up but I do think it's worth experimenting with.
Next to Yakubu, I think Mc Fadden is probably our most clinical finisher. Technically he is very good; what he lacks is consistency but that comes with playing games regularly. Surely it's time he was given the opportunity to prove himself with a run of games.
Personally I'd like to see us play Jonson and Arteta out wide against United. The pace of Johnson would certainly give their full-backs something to think about and would nullify the threat posed by Ronaldo.

While I haven't seen McFadden's Scotland goal, from reports I read it must have been a beauty: 25-yard shots usually look like so.
I'm just perplexed to the core by his Everton career so far: apart from Arteta, he is definitely the next most skillful player we have, he scores spectacular goals (Charlton last season, Fulham last season), and he has the ability to surprise, a very unteachable skill. In FM terms, it's called FLAIR and if I have to grade him by those terms, he will get a 18-20 for me.
So why is he where he is? Even Scotland uses him as a sub because he doesn't get enough games for Everton. So why not enough games for Everton? Is it because he doesn't fit the system? Too much individualism? I like to ask fellow ToffeeWeb readers if there is still hope in McFadden, and whether he could really be a valuable asset to us? If yes, then how? It will be a true blow should he move on and then deliver on his promise with another team, making us look like chumps in the end.

As the squad improves could we be gradually moving to the effectively 4-3-3 formation that many sides near to the top end of the league seem to gravitate towards?
Howard
Neville Yobo Lescott Baines
Arteta Jagielka Cahill
Johnson Yakubu McFadden
With able deputies in Pienaar, Vaughan, Anichebe, Carsley, Stubbs and Valente this isn?t bad.

Simply put, I do not feel he is good enough.
He is a good sub and yes he can score some cracking goals, however nearly every game I have watched him when he has started he has been absolutely gash.
He consistently runs into defenders and loses possession often.
Yes he is skilful but is also one of the most frustrating players we have. I have been saying for years that I hope he comes good but it doesn’t look anything more than a bit part player to me.
I have to disagree with your comment about being the next most skilful to Arteta, I believe that honour goes to Ossie but his small stature lets him down.

I rate McFadden, I think he needs a run of 4 or 5 matches where he is the first choice in ’whatever’ position ... winger or striker...to really see if he can cut it consistently. It seriously can’t be doing anything for him to start a game, score a cracking goal and then get dropped to the bench for the next match (i.e. Bolton).
Problem is that we have a very good squad now... who do you drop to give him the chance? Moyes choice in starting with Yakubu was vindicated... its a conundrum and only the ginger one has the answer.

My problem with mcFadden is that he does the difficult things well, clinical memorable goals when he does score but the simple things so badly you can’t forget them; a simple pass rather than trying to walk the ball over the line giving another player a crack at a goalscoring opportunity and trying to go past every midfielder and defender in his way. If he mastered both of these but more importantly the latter he would be a significantly better player

mcfadden isnt a winger, he’s a striker, the sooner people realise that the better

He has no pace yet tries to take on defenders using his tricks and skill alone. When starting a match this gets him nowhere. However when used as a sub late in the game his lack of pace is not so huge a problem as the defence is already tired. In a nutshell, this is why he’s cack when starting but seems to do well as a super sub. He is our Solskjaer and will never be a starter imo.

McFadden is definately NOT a striker, nor is he a winger; he’s a forward but certainly not a striker. The essence of a striker is being an out-an-out goalscorer, a poacher, someone like Ruud Van Nistelrooy, now he’s a striker and McFadden is nothing like him.
He has no pace, runs like he’s stuck in mud half the time, nice touch at times but he’ll never be a starter - in that sense he’s alot like Solskjaer; great impact player but only really any good for half an hour at best.
I reckon he’s better used a sub and not a starter. Whenever he starts he fades badly, when he’s sub he plays well. This goes for Everton and Scotland. Alex McLeish will tell you the same thing, as will Moyes I’m sure.

McFadden is our most spectacular finisher, but he is not a clinical finisher. Cahill is the most clinical - I haven?t seen enough of Yakubu yet.
McFadden is a good substitute but he has rarely impressed when he has played 90 minutes. Okay, he may go well with Yakubu, who knows, but let us see how Johnson plays with Yakubu first before relegating Johnson to the wing.

I appreciate what you are saying regarding the super-sub use of McFadden and agree that he often doesn’t look up to speed when he starts matches; i’m sure he doesn’t know how to deal with his limitations as a player but he has shown signs of improvement in this area... its a chicken-egg situation in that to get more out of him you have to use him more...
I think some blind faith might be required as we simply have not seen enough of McFadden in the last two years to know for sure if he can really do it consistently at this level...
It is surely worth a gamble to put faith in him for 4 or 5 games and see if his all-round game improves, see if he develops into a really dangerous player... this gamble may cost us a place or two in the league or it may gain us one or two...

How about loaning him out? Some Championship team might want him and will give him a good run of games. Could reveal a lot about him.

Hi JP, I am convinced that McFadden would look outstanding in the Championship... like Osman and Turner did when they played there on loan... even Beattie looks like a goalscorer for Sheff U now FFS :-) I think it would just present us with more questions.

He has no right foot but a spectacular left foot. In internationals he’s a little bit unknown so teams don’t know just to keep him on his right. Defenders in the premier league are a little wiser, don’t let him play on his left and he’ll be kept quiet. When he comes on later in games, tiring defenders struggle a bit more to do this hence why he is so much better coming off the bench.

I keep wishing that McFadden would become a great player at Everton, but i just don?t think he?s got it.He is like Huckerby he would be outstanding in the Championship !

Until McFadden can do the simple things like pass to a man in a good position he will be a player that has to be carried over 90 minutes. The odd screamer once or twice a season does not compensate for the frustration and If I was Moyes I would cash in on these few glimpses of genuine skill. Sell him for gods sakes, the answer has been obvious for ages!

Could not agree more Anthony. He is total rubbish. He played 29 games the season before last so must have strung four or five together I would imagine.
He would be a superstar in Scotland so let him go back there !
Every time I see his name in the starting line up my heart sinks. He really is nowhere good enough for the Premiership. He has no pace and every time the ball reaches him any move usually breaks down.
Taxi for McFadden !!

I think Moyes has worked out McFadden now (as have we all). He is a supersub, and a really great one to have at that.

It doesn?t matter if it is against Brazil or anyone else, if you score in the top corner from 25 yds, then the opposition are irrelevant. However, I do think he is a supersub (the next Solskjaer?), and nothing more.

Excellent time to negotiate a sale. Pity it wasn’t a week ago. We all know how much he contributes week in week out.
But ok, meanwhile he’s an option as a sub when we’re behind. Then it doesn’t matter how much he gives the ball away.
’Supersub’? Where have you been this last three years?

I think Faddy is a squad player and that is it. He’ll never become a regular, but he will produce magic which few other players can produce. That goal against Charlton was class personfied.

I think this problem will be solved over the next few weeks, given the amount of games we will be playing. AJ will have to get some rest, allowing Faddy to start there. Yakubu will be gone in a couple of months, allowing Faddy to start for him. If we can just stay in the Cup competitions for a change there will be enough games to accomodate everyone. Besides that, don’t we want a guy who can come off the bench and change the game??

He’s too slow to play from the start in Premiership games. It’s as simple as that.
If he could improve on his speed and power, he’d be a real threat.

I don?t normally go for the statto stuff but some of the shit thats been written about mcfadden...
1.he scored 3 goals in 8 starts last season...a good strike rate
2.scored with his right foot in the latter stages of a game he played 90 minutes of this season against blackburn...
3.he only played an average of 41 mins in all the games he played last season...
4.his pass cmpletion averaged 71% last season and tackle completion 86%
5. he?s scored 11 goals in 32 games for scotland most of which he hasn?t started...his goals per minutes must be up there with most present scottish forwards...
has he ever started more than a handful of games back to back..yet is attitude is to get on with it...he can use both feet..completes nearly 3/4 of his passes, and his goals against charlton and blackburn and undoubted talent deserve a decent run in the side
