Top 4?
Comments (11)
In view of the generally negative press we seem to get, it was good to read Patrick Barclay in the Sunday Telegraph who was commenting on Martin O'Neill and Villa's defeat of Chelsea. He reckons that the only club with a chance of breaking into the top 4 are Everton... "partly because they have an outstanding manager in David Moyes". So we are appreciated after all...

Hmmm... if memory serves, I do believe he's actually done it already. Lazy journalism!

I think we will finish 3rd this season, and people should take note that we are a team not to be taken lightly. COYB

Bentley, I like your optimism and I hope you're right but I seriously can't see us getting 3rd.

Did anyone notice the review of the top of the table last weekend by Sky Sports?
"Liverpool are top of the table on goal difference from Arsenal with Chelsea fourth."
If we had taken a point against Reading to top the table would they have started their review with "Liverpool are second ahead of Arsenal"
Ignore the mighty Blues at your peril. We are coming and nothing can stand in our way.

Connor, apart from united and Chelsea I dont think we are far behind any one else if we are lucky with injuries and suspensions

Roy, if we aren’t far behind them, then we still are behind them.

For us to break into the top four one or more of those already there must have a bad season. I had hoped our red neighbours would, this year, but it doesn’t look like that now, anyway. OTOH, a Man Utd without proper strikers and a squabbling Chelsea might struggle more than anyone would have thought.
BTW, has anyone considered that we are 5 pts ahead of Spurs, although they have had the easier setup until now (S’land, Fulham and Derby yielding 4 points). It’ll be close, but we haven’t been this strong for ages. Just gotta keep them lads fit!

True Gary but we are capable of beating them ,as to just turning up to make the numbers,I accept that the squad is not as strong as some but feel we can challenge Arsenal and Liverpool if we avoid injuries

Optomism aside i dont think fourth is possible this season, i think we will just scrape into the top eight, a repeat of last season is a possibility from what i have seen less the tottenham match, we have been ordinary and will struggle away from home against the likes of av blackburn fulham man city sunderland, so to presume fourth is hoping for the best, any higher would be a miracle, guys you need to be realistic then you will be ecstatic if we better sixth.

You might be right Chris but I don’t think so. Don’t forget that last season we had a good goal difference for the first time (this was no ’scrambled’ sixth but a point off fifth) - this is a big sign of progress. Since fifteen months ago we’ve lost the likes of Beattie, Naysmith, Kilbane and Davies and gained the likes of Johnson, Yakubu, Jagielka, Baines, Howard, Pienaar. We’ve even got Tommy back which will add something for a year or so. And the players are only just being drafted in together. In contrast to a few years ago, many of them are young and some have pace, which we haven’t had for years. Our weaker players are now actually quite good! No, I don’t see why we shouldn’t be fifth clear
I just can’t see who’s going to let us into the top four this year after Liverpool’s good start. But that could change. Melt-down at Chelsea and Drogba gets injured? Might just be enough, not impossible!
