The Mail Bag

A Few Thoughts.

You could argue that coming back from Internationals had an impact on the players or that the early kick-off had an effect, you could even claim Man Utd were as piss-poor as us but there's no getting away from the fact that was a bad result and an awful performance.

Arteta and the boys made some noise before the game about being ready and up for it but it looks as though they were treating it as a friendly, in fact it was worse then that, a Sunday game in the park performance.

Moyes got things wrong from the start. No Carsley? A player so often credited as Everton's most reliable was dropped to the bench? Was he injured? Was he rested for the upcoming Euro game?

Jimmy McFadden was having a wonderful week, did Moyes even consider him for a starting place? Surely a player in that sort of form would be considered? Especially since Andy "I've forgotten how to score" Johnson clearly needs to be dropped.

Yakubu, Everton's record buy, I had my doubts and voiced them when the links first surfaced. He's a lazy player and looked every bit uninterested today. Are the Yak and AJ going to form this wonderful partnership? One's lazy and the other couldn't score in a drugs den. Very worrying.

With both teams playing badly the game was there for the winning, Moyes makes an attacking substitution, great I thought here comes McFadden, the form he's in it wouldn't surprise me if he hits a winner. But no Moyes decides to throw on Anichebe.

Anichebe is a player in the past I've described as a poor man's Heskey. After the recent England games, I take that back, he's not good enough to be a poor man's Heskey, he's a poor man's Marcus Bent. I was so annoyed McFadden was not introduced earlier. Moyes did finially bring him on but by then the game was lost.

This was a really bad performance; Man Utd were there for the taking but our players were too limp to do it. I really hope Moyes tore them apart in the dressing room after the game.

Next up is the long-awaited Euro game against Metallist. If Everton turn in a similar performance our Euro adventure will be shorter then a couple of years ago.

Sort it out Mr Moyes and quick.

No its me Michael. I?m just very pissed off because they played so badly.

One week we brilliantly beat Spurs, the next we lose to Reading, then we beat Bolton away and everything seems rosy and now this piss poor performance.

WOULD THE REAL EVERTON PLEASE STAND UP.

Spot on Dutchy baby...Moyes effin bottled it big time. The overpriced prima donnas from up the m62 were ripe for the spanking but moyes was way too defensive and we let the arrogant manky manc cunts twat us with a soft sucker punch. Moyes: I love you for dragging us fom our arses but FFS believe in NSNO and we can make the next step right effin now!

Yak’s never been my favourite striker but how can you begin to criticise him when he hasn’t hardly had the ball.

Feed the Yak and he’ll score it goes doesn’t it- not make the Yak run around chasing the defenders as they pass it between themselves.

The problem is as it’s been for years- the midfield! In Baines and jags (when used as full backs)weve got defenders who have the athleticism to come forward and get back too. Yobo & Lescott solid and decent for a set piece too. We have an abundance of decent strikers- especially with Vaughny on the mend...

ITS JUST THAT WE AINT GOT NO MIDFIELD!

Arteta’s a decent winger in a good midfield- the rest are squad players at best! Carsley could be used to sweep up but that only works if there’s creativity in front of him that makes up for it.

Hope Tim soon comes back but i fear we’re still 1 (2 for cover) players short to start thinking of definite top 6 finishes.

Just waiting for the window to open...haha!

To be honest it wasnt a great game today from either side , but I dont think we were over defensive..
Yakubu is short of fitness and anybody can look lazy next to the industry of AJ.. I thought the Yak played ok today ..not great, but not shite either..
Nevilles passing was abysmal..but even with him constantly giving the ball away, we still had no saves to make until the 83rd minute.
Yes United were not at their best, neither were we.

I know to some the cup is always half empty..but if you miss the excitement of a relegation battle..and dont really fancy trips abroad to watch your team..well Wigan are short of a few fans..(no obstructed views) and its only 1/2 hour down the road..

Moyes and Neville. That’s what I worry about. You get the feeling sometimes that a player becomes undroppable for a manager, and even gets to decide where he plays. This is not good.

Why did Neville play instead of Carsley today? Everyone knows Carsley is the better holding midfielder. Why was Neville not pushed at least back to fullback? Everyone knows that’s his best position.

It will be interesting to see what happens when Cahill and Gravesen are both back. SURELY Neville won’t get a place in that midfield? I’m beginning to wonder.

(P.S. Cahill for captain, Yobo for vice-captain.)

Carsley never played today and as we got beat as usual people are on moaning about a decision that went wrong or there is a conspiracy to keep Neville in the team, of course it couldnt be so simple that after 2 games for the national team he took a knock as reported so he was left on the bench.

It was a poor performance, I?ll agree, but statements like ?since Andy "I?ve forgotten how to score" Johnson clearly needs to be dropped,? just beggar belief.

Johnson was given one chance to score in the entire 90 minutes, a glancing header off a corner that was hacked off the line by Paul "should?a been sent off" Scholes. It was the closest we cam to scoring all game.

By all means say that AJ might have done better with the ball on a couple of occasions when he burst free down the flank but you can?t accuse a player of forgetting how to score if he only gets one or two scoring opportunities per game.

And had Moyes dropped him for McFadden, I imagine he'd be getting more stick for breaking up a £20m striker partnership just one match into its lifespan.

I posted on here 2 weeks ago after The Observer printed stats showing captain fantastic Neville was the 2nd worst passer in the Premier League. I got absolutely slaughtered for agreeing with it. Can everyone see that he is absolute garbage now?

Moyes got it totally wrong today. I hate playing at home just to nulify the other team. Why were we so scared to commit men forward today? We played so incredibly narrow today that Arteta was totally ineffective.

Baines was our most attacking player and he’s the bloody left back. Why didn’t Moyes at least try switching Arteta to the left to link up with Baines? Why not start with Pienaar? He can’t be any worse than Osman.

The worse thing about today’s defeat is that it was totally predictable. As the ball went out for that corner I turned to my brother and said, "It’s just about the right time for us to just gift them a goal now" and sure enough we concede another easy goal to them. Perhaps it was another gentlemen’s agreement.

Lots of slagging moyes team selection from "the usual suspects" today..I personally agree that Hibbert has had one chance too many and I would not have picked him..but he played fine today..apart from one or two "HOOFS" when a simple ball was on. Nevilles distribution was pants..but as a holding midfielder, nothing got past him and the defense had its easiest game this season.
Overall we did not perform..but shite like "the knives are out for Moyes".???? get a grip..we lost one point on the teams above us and made the champions look toothless..the referee was a fucking discrace..every fifty /fifty went utds way and we still matched them..If you do watch the game again we played some nice stuff..Yakubu, Baines , Jags...a loss but some positives there as well

Yeah Terry look on the bright side eh? At least we didn’t concede more than 1! How did we make them look toothless? They beat us, so what do we look like?

Moyes gets praised when he gets it right and it’s only right he gets criticised when he fucks up. Today he fucked it up.

Terry, it?s just this sort of fucking daft tacit acceptance of mediocrity that will have us stay exactly where we are. Played some nice stuff??? The only nice stuff I remember was Baines trickery down the flank, so our nice stuff left to a sodding defender. These are the problems as I see them:
a) Moyes is a poor tactician and after 5 years it looks like he always will be
b) Neville is a very limited player who cannot pass the ball. Ditto for Hibbert & Osman
c) Our football means our forwards are left isolated and therefore rendered useless
d) Our lineups mean we are reliant on one player too create something and when he doesn?t turn up were fucked
d) All of the above has gone on for too fucking long

WAKE UP EVERBODY!!!!!!

It?s my opinion that he mucks up every week how in the name of christ he picks anybody over james mcfadden is totally beyond me here we have a man who if given time (more than 5 minutes a game) can come up with sublime brilliance time and time again his goal at Hampden was a cracker (i know being right behind the goal at the time!) and then he try?s, well actually he did, out-do Archie?s classic against Holland in ?74 and now he get?s 5 minutes today it is just beyond a joke, and don?t tell me i?m wearing blinkers etc etc yes i?m biased there is no mistaking that but can anyone honestly tell me that Andy Johnson or any of the rest of the (ahem) strikers could seriously match anything this boy can do he can produce something out of nothing every time and today he gets 5 MINUTES UNBELI EVABLE

Yes we got beat today but I thought we made a good account of ourselves against the best team in the league. I also do not believe Man Utd where lacklustre. That is just an excuse pundits make when a smaller team gives a bigger team a game. We made them look lacklustre in my opinion. We played with lots of agression, passion and energy and the only thing missing was a goal. I am not too downhearted as both Vidic and Ferdinand battled hard and played well.

I take lots of positives from the game. Baines was the best player on the park and looks a classy left back. Jagielka has the energy, tackling ability and pace we need from a midfielder and had a decent game. Yakubu and Johnson where handfulls all day. Hibbert didn't really have a bad game ? he is a squad player and a decent one at that. The negatives from the game: Neville is not a midfielder and the sooner he is either moved to a different position or dropped the better.

We played well against a very good team and if we continue to perform like this I will be happy.

Yakuba and Johson handfulls ?
Come on Connor, they where dealt with easily on the day and offered virtually no threat at all.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson:
"We are delighted with the win because people will see a very improved Everton this season. Teams will find it very hard coming here. But we stood up to Yakubu and Andrew Johnson, who will be handful for anyone, and our defenders showed great determination."

Guess what guys, even Alex feels that we were great. Our defence was so great that it took a defender from a corner to beat us.

We were downright unlucky today. With the same performance by Man Utd, other teams would be down by more than 3.

And Moyes, in my humble opinion, made only one mistake, by not playing McFadden early when Jimmy Fad is still hot. Should?ve rested AJ considering the dude just came back from International duty.

I agree with most of your comments, but not sure if AJ will get ’that one off his backside’ to get him going from the bench.

foolishly missed your rant above and have just read it. You make the points exactly...I myself have been saying this for some time.
