Andrew Johnson, you've just been found out

Comments (60)

Seen the text scrolling down my BBC page for half-an-hour now, and I'm seeing goals galore... at White Hart Lane, and tearing my hair out at Goodison... and right now: AJ BLASTS OVER, SECOND PENALTY MISS.

We've got another Biffa in our hands.

Missing two penalties like that is unforgivable and I don’t know if I ever want to see Johnson in an Everton shirt again.

Terrible misses, yes, shouldn’t have been allowed to take the third one.

But we need to get behind aj now.. he looked like he was crying at full time; I felt for him.
Paul Barrett
8   Posted 20/09/2007 at 22:34:23

Bit harsh that Dutch, he probably shouldn’t have taken the 2nd (third?) one because 99% of strikers would probably have missed as well after their confidence gets a knock like that. He was our most dangerous threat on the night, and for a bit more service would have done okay.

I think you should direct your anger at Hibbert and Neville who yet again showed they shouldn’t be in the side. Yakubu didn’t do much to convince me that he should be in the side either. My nan could have hit his shots better and she’s 80.

Where to start on such a complete and utter disaster? Let’s get it out of the way first: the referee’s decision to retake the first penalty was one of the worst decisions I have ever seen, and he should not be allowed to referee another game in international football. This is not some difficult split second call gone wrong. The referee is a moron and a disgrace. Everton should make an official complaint and have him banned.

Okay. But we were crap. No creativity in the midfield as expected. McFadden was everything we now know: a useless liability except for one shot near the end. Yakubu was almost as bad, and Anichebe looked twice the player (who does Davey play next?). Johnson - ran and ran... not only did he miss, what the fuck was he doing taking the second never mind the third penalty? Shouldn’t Moyes have stopped that? On TV it was obvious his head wasn’t there.

Man of the match for Everton? Wessels. Absolute fucking disaster.

Excuses? Areteta, Cahill, Gravesen, Pienaar maybe. But really not. We play three in attack - and they are all utter shite. You can’t complain then if you don’t win.

What a joke. AJ, Pip and Hibbert should be shot. A striker who cant score, a midfielder who can t pass or tackle and a defender who can t defend or distribute. I truely am lost for words f king hoofball all nite....same shite. Make no mistake they were a poor side and we should be ashamed. THE CLUB DOESN T DESERVE US

Anyone got odds on us to get relegated, and go out first round of all the cups?

Everton were awful, the endless long-ball tactic from Moyes, and Johnson’s inability to play well!

Why was Baines not allowed to the Pens? I can remember him banging in a few of them for Wigan.

Beattie, Johnson and Yakubu, are not bad players at all, but it is our uncreative midfield that was the problem. If we had had Arteta and (Fernandes) we would have won that game by a couple of goals.

Overall, the lack of finishing ability, and the lack of good crosses into the box, meant that this was the worst performance I have seen since... Burcharest away!

Let’s hope we can avod relegation this season, and before any jumps on my back, just watch the performance but in by the Bue boys today.

The fans were up for it, and didn’t stop in the first half, I thought Moyes was rewarding us, the fans, for the victory!

RANT OVER!

I’m sorry but I disagree about Johnson being are main threat, other than the 3 penalties he barely touched the ball....oh wait the penalties were OUR THREAT. I couldn’t understand taking Yakubu off for the 2nd week running, at least he’s shooting, they might not be great shots but you don’t score if you don’t shoot a la AJ

16   Posted 20/09/2007 at 22:31:17

Where does one start, the initial line up had me baffled. A totally new formation that no one seemed to understand. Neville once again in the middle of the park couldn’t string two passes together. Hibbert gave the ball away all night. Osman the anchor man in midfield FFS! Andy Johnson is totally out of sorts and he’s given penalty after penalty to take, surely that responsibility should have been passed to Mc Fadden after the first miss. Yakubu has clearly been told by Moyes that he needs to work harder and spent the evening trying to shut the opposition down instead of doing what he’s good at and incidentally one of the best penalty takers in the premiership but given an early bath. I beg to differ it was not Johnson who was found out tonight but Moyes. A team reduced to 9 men and all we could manage was hoof ball.

Carsley, Neville and Hibbert are all utter shite, every pass goes awry. All of them flogged to whoever wants them, sheff utd maybe.

Yakubu looked way too unfit for my liking.

18   Posted 20/09/2007 at 22:41:43

I think Our midfield was the big problem, no ideas at all with arteta, pienaar and gravesen out.

Yakubu looks so sluggish up front, where is his pace? AJ looks so short on confidence, the ref was a total joke making him retake the pen.

I Dispair everytime i see Hibbert on the team sheet, more hoofball and errors from him.

I Think it was highlighted tonight how short we are on quality midfield players, Osman, Carsley and Neville!! it hardly fills u full of confidence!

I think we will roll over them in the return leg with arteta, pienaar and gravesen back, but does not help the dispair i feel after watching 2nites game.

Dutch Schaffaer
19   Posted 20/09/2007 at 22:41:34

I’m not blaming Hibbert and Neville, thats too easy, fucking Andy Johnson is supposed to be a quality striker, an England International. How anyone can say he was our most dangerous threat is beyond me. Did the guy even make the goalie work? I can’t remember a single shot from AJ.

Those penalties were awful. No excuses. He puts those away and Everton walk out 3-1 and things look pretty good.

Sorry but AJ is to blame and his inability to score a goal has gone on long enough.

The sooner January comes around the sooner Moyes can shift AJ and his fat partner Yakubu down a division.

Thats if we allow Moyes to stay until January. At the moment I’m finding it hard to let him stay till the weekend.

we were an embarrassment tonight. despite spending millions on the squad we still rely on set-pieces for goals. we need players who can pass the ball in midfield and baines apart we were less than average out there.
Rob Gee
22   Posted 20/09/2007 at 22:42:08

Why oh why?! I thought a solid defence (Wessels, Baines, Lescott, Yobo shone in my view) should have been the basis of convincing win, but it only takes one weak link..... Hibbert better than Jagielka? McFadden better than Pienaar? Mr Moyes please explain yourself. Maybe we’ll scrape a win at Hillsborough.

Headless chickens on steroids. All pace and bluster, hoof and hope, with no patience in build up, no power in the shooting (is Yakubu a girl?), and recklessness in leaving holes in defence too often (i.e. crap tactics). AJ is not a Premiership striker, much less an England standard player. In all, so embarassing.
Mark Pendleton
26   Posted 20/09/2007 at 22:51:57

I’m gutted about tonight but let’s face it, a referee with half a mind would have allowed AJ’s excellently struck first penalty to stand. Job done, he’s off the mark, happy days. But, he didn’t and he fluffed the next two. Not time to have a go at AJ.

Yak was poor.

27   Posted 20/09/2007 at 22:44:50

In the end of the day, we are totally screwed for the return trip. A nice long haul journey to Ukraine, with lovely hostile supporters, looking to get a goal with our dynamic strike force. We need an absolute miracle, as this team is just going to sit back and play 10 men in defense just to protect there away goal advantage. Once again our European dream ends on the first day. Lets see how long our big name players want to stay at the club in Jan. What was Yakubu’s reason why he signed for us? Yep European Football.

That was a piss-poor performance, against awful opposition. Yakubu doesnt look interested, phil neville cant tackle without fouling someone, and Tony Hibbert is championship quality at best. Neville should have wrestled the ball off AJ for the last penalty, anyone else would have been a better choice.

Horrible fu..in horrible! What a disaster. Why the f... was Johnson taking the third pk? His head is all screwed up. I don’t think I have ever seen a worse pk taken. I am so pissed off at this performance. Why were we hoofing the ball after Metalist went down to 10 men? Oh, because we had a shitty midfield in place. They are all scared to dribble the ball up the field. Now we go to Kharkiv and Metalist will just sit back and look for a 0-0 draw. Unbelievable everything that could possibly go wrong in the game happened: the refereeing, a lucky bounce for Metalist, a short handed goal, two pk misses, a piss poor performance by the midfield, etc etc...
Paul Barrett
31   Posted 20/09/2007 at 22:52:07

"Iâ??m not blaming Hibbert and Neville, thats too easy"

It’s so easy because it’s where the blame lies. Bad distribution from the back = No service = No shots. Also you can’t cross the ball from the channels to yourself.

Bad as it was tonight, I think blaming Johnson is wrong, if you disagree well that’s up to you, but that’s what I think.
Paul Tran
32   Posted 20/09/2007 at 22:56:26

I couldn’t believe they allowed Johnson to take that last penalty. It just shows the lack of real leadership on the pitch. That team desparately needs two things. A real, genuine leader on the pitch and Moyes to sit down, shut his mouth and let his expensively assembled team do what they’re paid to do.

33   Posted 20/09/2007 at 22:54:05

It’s only half time FFS! Don’t bottle it and have some faith. It is massively dissapointing that we missed TWO pens and that Arteta was missing. This though, is possibly the best thing. Rather than going to Ukraine trying to hold onto a lead, we HAVE to WIN it now! It’s a real test of our METTLE, both fans and players. Fear not and be be not lilly livered, we’ll stuff them in the Ukraine...bring it on!

34   Posted 20/09/2007 at 22:31:43

This was propably the worst I’ve ever seen from an Everton team since I started watching Everton in 1966. It’s 2005 Europe tour all over again, Moyes clearly hasn’t learned anything from it. This "team" of Everton couldn’t have beaten 11 grannies let alone a 9-men team from Ukraine.
Occasionally they played good passing football making Everton look like amateurs.
Moyes is absolute beginner when it comes to tactics and playing in cup matches or in Europe. And only an idiot puts the same man to shoot a penalty after he has already missed one.
Facts:
Yakubu is crap.
Johnson’s confidence is gone.
We got no midfield players who play can modern attacking football.
It’s going to be a very long autumn without goals and wins.

The only good news is that come January Yakubu will want to move on to get Euro football at another club.

Maybe we can persuade Spurs to give us a couple of million for Yakubu in January.

If going out of Europe early leads to Yakubu demanding a move then things aren’t so bad after all.

37   Posted 20/09/2007 at 22:53:10

Long ball against 9 men..astonishing.I agree with everyone about hibbert and nevilles long balls, but that playing culture is down to Moyes

I admire AJ in a away for wanting to make ammends for his first miss..but Moyes should have got word onto the pitch to have Baines or MacFadden take the last penalty.

That last few minutes when Neville was humpong long straight balls what was that about..I didnt realise we had Koller playing up front, just laughable, but again its Moyes not the players who creates the culture where punting it is an option, and in times of desperation the only option.

38   Posted 20/09/2007 at 22:51:09

The ticket fiasco before the game, The failure of the club to inform fans of no alcohol inside the ground via the website, Moyes’ decision to play 4-3-3 with two defenders in midfield and his decision to a) buy Yakubu, b) allow Andy Johnson to take two penalties with his confidence already shot to pieces and c) continuously allow Tony Hibbert to
play for us are all things that have been brought to light on an evening that has myself and many Evertonians embarassed and extremely worried about what the season holds in store for us.

Moyes deserves his share of the critism but he did send out a very attacking team and it made sense to have Neville and Carsley watching the back door while McFadden, Osman, Yakubu and AJ destroyed the poor opposition.

Unfortunately for Moyes his plan was flawed because Osman disappears quicker then the tardis, McFadden is still making bad decisions, Yakubu makes Beattie look like he’s got a six-pack and AJ is just piss poor at scoring goals, even when he gets multiple penalties.

Wessels : (7) okay ! couldn’t do much about the goal, cracking save early on.

Hibbert : (3) Piss Poor ! Bad positioning off the ball ... hoofball when on it (even when no opposition within 20 yards of him) Not good enough !

Yobo : (6) okay ! Looked comfortable most of the game. Maybe at fault for the goal after leaving his man to cover Hibbert.

Lescott : (7) good ! Good goal, good in defense as always.

Baines : (7) good !Strong running, handled entire left side on his own.

Carsley : (5)poor ! Was he actually playing ... offered little in attacking presence and was rarely involved.

Osman : (7) good ! Looked very good in spells and worked hard as always but often didn’t have the out-ball .

Neville (4) poor ! Not good enough a footballer to be playing midfield in even a conference side. A liability ... should (MUST) be used as a right back only !

Johnson (5) poor ! Ran his little socks off - dismal with the penalties after the first was disallowed by the twat ref ! Will he ever score again ?

McFadden (6) okay ! Maybe confused by the system like everyone else ... cracking corner delivered for the goal though.

Yakubu (5) poor ! Just a non-event in terms of a performance ...

Subs:

Jagielka (5) didn’t have much time

Anichebe (8) got stuck in and put himself about a bit... looked more of a threat on his own than the rest of the strikeforce put together... I wasn’t convinced about Victor beforehand but I can see his value to the team now...

Which begs the question; he has 20+ Million pounds worth of talent (???) in front of him ... so who is going to become the next James Beattie because on tonights efforts , Anichebe is a must-start for the Villa game !

43   Posted 20/09/2007 at 23:00:07

Hard to blame AJ when two thirds of the midfield comprises Carsley & Neville. The performance was shocking and the puntball has to stop. Frightening to see a team with 9 men basically outplaying a team with eleven. No shape, no leaders, not enough first touch skill and too slow. I have to agree with those who think it is time for Moyes to go.

Dutch, for the umpteenth time over the last few years, who buys theses players, who coaches these players, who barks at them constantly for the whole game?

Everyone says Moyes inherited a bad squad. Funny how he made those players look good, but the the better players he buys, the less we seem to improve.

Work that one out - obvious to me!

A disappointing draw in Europe against lesser opposition...complaints about unattractive football...lets cross our fingers for mutual consent
Tim Banks
46   Posted 20/09/2007 at 23:05:54

I’m not going to pretend that tonight was a great performance, because it wasn’t. However, I often feel completely embarrassed to be part of the same set of fans as some of the people on here.

12 months ago, after he’d buried Liverpool, everyone was convinced AJ was the dog’s. Yes, he’s going through a barren spell, but he’s still a good player. 1 month ago, everyone was saying how great it was to be signing Yakubu. Now, after he’s played 3 games for us, he’s a waste of space.

People are complaining that we were punting it up against 9 men in the last 10 minutes. Every other team in the world chasing a winner would have done the same.
Nonetheless, people complain that this all stems from Moyes. What also stems from Moyes is the fact that we haven’t looked in danger of being relegated in 5 years, and that two of those seasons have resulted in qualification for Europe.

You might complain that we don’t play the most attractive football, but so what. We didn’t lose tonight, we drew 1-1. Everyone can see how nuts Abramovich is for getting rid of Mourinho. Unless we have someone lined up who could do better than Moyes, and I see no obvious candidates (before anyone says it, Mourinho is way out of our price range), then he should stay. You don’t get extra points for pretty football.

I remain utterly convinced that we will be in the next round, and completely convinced that we will be in the last 32. If we don’t make it to either of those, I will come back here and eat humble pie. Seriously though gents, put the razor blades away. You’re like a bunch of fucking teenagers.

Only to go a little bit against the anti-AJ tide here. He was crap, but still offered more threat than Yakubu and McFadden. I can’t count the times McFadden lost the ball. And Yakubu looked like all he was playing for was free kicks. At least AJ ran at them a few times.

AJ lacks confidence, but he can come good (we’ve seen it). McFadden is always shite, every week. And Yak looks like he’s come for the money.

Of course Anichebe was better than the three of them put together. Vaughan would have been too.

MacFaddens delivery resulted in our goal.

Id sooner have someone give the ball away trying to beat a man and make things happen. Than give it away by aimlessly hoofing it up the park

I thought of the front 3 Macfadden performed the best

Yakubu should be running laps of the training ground for a fortnight

57   Posted 21/09/2007 at 00:00:26

Iain, we are all gutted here, so God knows what we are thinking. But, yeah apart from the one corner and the late shot, I really did think McFadden was utterly, dangerously useless. Every time he tried to flick the ball around and turn the defender. Every time he failed, usually leaving us facing a counter-attack. AJ actually sometimes beats defenders, and he gives the ball way nowhere near as much as McFadden.

Of course, we may be arguing about who is the tallest dwarf here. They were all shite. But of AJ, McF and the Yak, if I had to keep one of them it would definitely be AJ. And I would use McFadden only ever as a late sub. And I am praying that Yakubu isn’t as bad as he looks. And thinking that, based on everything we know, Vaughany and Vic may really be the best stikers at the club.

im not saying MacFadden played well, just that he had an impact on the game in creating a goal.

As a Scot its hugely frustrating watching the Everton MacFadden when for Scotland he seems a different player
