I oddly care surprisingly little about tonight's performance. Towards the end of the first half it just turned into one of those games where we were so bad it took on an almost surreal quality. Barring a twenty minute show of interest from Anichebe, and a goalkeeper who did nothing wrong, there was basically nothing redeemable in that performance.
I'm not even sure, given the absence of Arteta, Gravesen and Pienaar through injury, what alternative team I'd have selected. With the exception of Jagielka, who must be sitting on the bench wondering what exactly he's let himself in for when he can't displace Neville from midfield or Hibbert from right back.
We're not a bad team. We don't play nearly as bad football all the time as people suggest (though we revert to it too easily when things aren't going well), and in general I feel reasonably positive about us doing OK this season. But good god we were awful tonight.

Sadly Johnson is piss-poor and couldn’t score a goal if keepers were banned.
I know people will say he’s out of form and his confidence is low but look at James Beattie, even at his lowest you could always count on him to swagger up to the spot and put the penalty away.
3 Posted 21/09/2007 at 08:20:32
So Johnson is piss-poor is he?? Is this based upon the fact that he missed two penalties or his general game?
What i am seeing is a bloke giving every effort in the Everton cause week in week out without any decent service to feed upon. Any forward in world football would struggle playing behind that midfield.
Kick a man whilst he is down why don’t you!
You will be chanting his name again in a few weeks you hypocrite.

I think were starting to see now what happened under Walter Smith. The morale of players and confidence is just suffering because of barmy tactics and ineffective football. Expect things to get worse before they get better

I actually didn’t think we were that bad last night apart from too many long punts from the half-way line. Defensively we were sound (bar the one obvious exception), we just need to be more patient in possesion. I think the expectation was that we were going to stroll through to 6-0 win and that rubbed off on the players causing a degree of panic - even as early as the first 20 mins. It’s not over yet.

Hibbert was utter crap last night. Yes he got forward and put a few decent crosses in but he was ALWAYS out of position and that caused problems for the rest of the defense AND any sensible passes were long up the pitch straight to a Metalist player. Neville appeared able only to pass sideways or backwards - I agree he should be a rightback.
We are short in the midfield for quality which showed last night. No one ran the midfield and most of the balls we long balls down the channels (unless from Hibbert who put them down the middle)
The players who stood out for me were Leighton Baines and Wessel. AJ looked like he didn’t know what to do with the ball once he had it. Yakubu didn’t want to play, Carlsey didn’t appear to do anything and Osman isn’t strong enough. The Yobo and Lescott were solid and dependable enough as you’d hope.
I still come back to the point where AJ appears to be trying to make up for the lack of wingers by doing the job himself....

This is utterly reminiscent of Walter Smith and people keep saying on here in Moyes’s defence "what would you rather, we wnet back to the bad old days under Smith?" Last night and this season we have. Incidentally I see Walter Smith’s side beat the German chamions this week.

Moyes didn’t even have the bollocks to say we were shit. I’d have had a lot more respect if he’d held his hands up and said ’fair enough, we made a balls up of it’. But no, he blames a ref who gave us 2 pens and sent 2 of their players off.
I would say that the only player who can claim to have acquitted themselves last night was Wessels.
A lot of people have give Yobo and Lescott praise, but they can’t have watched the same match. There was more than one occasion, their goal aside, where I was shitting it, as they broke through our back line. They unlocked our defense more than once, I don’t think I can say the same for our lot!!!
Have some balls Moyes, admit you fucked it up and change something. Don’t rely on Arteta or Gravesen to bail you out.... do something about it.

When Johnson missed his 2nd - I laughed. I laughed loudly and proudly. I did this because one doesnt want to break down in tears on a Thursday evening in their front living room.
Our football is horrible to watch.
Our PR is horrendous.
The treatment of fans is awful.
Johnson is shot to fuck. Dare I say it, Ive always always been pro Moyes, but now i think maybe, finally, im starting to change my mind.

I’m really beginning to have my doubts about Yakubu, if you cant out pace/out strength/out jump opponents of that class you must be either extremeley lazy or extremeley shite!

The team are probably feeling as miserable as we are about the whole shebangs and they need lifting, not slagging off. I was as upset and as disappointed as anyone else - when I went to bed all I could think about was the football and I admit to saying, when Andy Johnson, missed his last penalty, "Well great, you have fucked up any chances we have now". We all know, in our hearts, what the probable outcome of last night’s fiasco is going to be but we can hope until it happens and get behind the lads and try and lift their confidence for Sunday’s game against the Villa. Actually my son "hit it on the nail" really when he said - I couldn’t care less if they are out of any cups, at least they will concentrate on the Premiership". In fairness that was not my view - I would like them to win something. Come on you moaners and pessimists, let’s try and lift our lads.

We’ll have Tommy and Arteta back for the 2nd leg and I for one am damn sure we’re a better side than Metalist and I’m also confident we’ll score at least once over there.
Up the blues!

The words "Make-over" are absultely bang on and thats right from the top downwards. I don’t think we have a bad set of players now but there seems to be a general malaise at manager and board level which is just stopping us from moving forward.
We know the manager won’t be dismissed so that means we have to hope someone comes in and buys the club and reshapes it completely. That’s the only way this grand old club is going to move forward. Every aspect of the running and operation of Everton Football Club is an embarrassment at the minute and it’s high time it changed. Go, all of you shisters and let someone who knows what they are doing have a crack

But I have to admit now that you have been right all along that he could not take us to the next level. I hoped he could, because changing managers around all the time (a la Newcastle) is no way to run a football club. I also hoped that he would learn - not a ridiculous hope maybe. But I now doubt that he can in anything like the timeframe we need - i.e. this year.
Realistically, I suspect that Moyes has until the end of the season unless we start to plummet down the league (now possible in my view), or unless our stars start to want out. But also realistically I suspect that even Kenwright now knows that Moyes is going to have to be replaced next summer at the latest. At least gives him time to look.
24 Posted 21/09/2007 at 12:29:33
The Yak is lazy and weak, he has a long way to go before he’ll get any praise from me. But I will praise AJ, he works effortlessly and the goals will come - you don’t become a bad striker overnight. Neville is the captain and should have stopped him taking the 2nd peno.
In the meantime, does anyone actually know Davie M? If so, please, please, please tell him that Tony Hibbert would struggle to get into most sunday league sides. If you can’t pass then you can’t play in the Prem or Europe, simple as. Pick Jags...now!!
25 Posted 21/09/2007 at 12:19:35
Moyes has been complaining about the small squad but only he can do something about it not us ! I personally would have played :
Wessells
Hibbo Yobo Lescott Valente
Ossie Neville Jagielka Baines
Johnson Yakubu
I know Baines would be out of position but he honestly looks like our best attacking option at times and Nuno has ’European’ experience. 442 is how we play each week and we don’t really get as embarrassed as we did last night.
Finally, I dont agree with all this AJ’s crap and Yakubu is a waste of money as they are both strikers not wingers ! They thrive on chances being created and are there to score goals. Van Nistelrooy wouldn’t score in our team as it seems that you have to be able to get the ball and create your own chances as the midfield wont do it for you. The fact is our Manager has been here for 5 years and has still not managed to bring in a top class central midfielder ! Lee Carsley was here when Moyes took over and we were on the brink of relegation and he’s still in our team now !! How’s that progress ??
An absolutely gutted Blue !!!

When you consider that Vaughan is back soon I wonder why Moyes gambled so much money on Yakubu , I think he will end up like Beattie , ie , stuck on the bench.
Tony Hibbert is so bad it is embarrassing , what does Moyes see when he watches the game ????
I think we will win in the Ukraine , when Arteta is back .

It wasn’t as bad as you all think, you’re just a bit caught up in the emotion of it all.
We’re still in the UEFA cup and I’m confident we’ll score over there. I reckon we’ll get through no problem, we’re a way better side than them and with Tommy & Arteta back in 2 weeks we’ll whip em.

It was as bad as we think. It was hopeless.
It’d be one thing if DM had come out and kicked the players arses for a shitty performance like that, but for him to blame the ref is a poor show.
2-0 up against 10 men would have flattered us. They played better football than us and if the performance isn’t 400% better at their place, then we will get done and we’ll be back to where we started 13 months ago.
I was optimistic at the start of the season, I still am, but Moyes’ reaction is not easily foriven.
Tell the players who were shit that they were shit and change it, don’t blame someone else for your own shit. That’s the problem.
He needs to get us playing in the next 3 games and get us to the group stages. We then need to carry on playing until next May. I don’t want to see another performance like that this season.
33 Posted 21/09/2007 at 13:39:02
You can’t please some people, we keep on hearing that we need to be more adventurous and Moyes picks a 4-3-3 to attack what was a crap side. It went wrong because the players were fooking shite and couldn’t string two passes together.
My main grip against Moyes was that he should have changed it at half time, take off Hibbert, move the useless passer Pip to right back and bring on Jags.
When Hibbert gets the ball it invariably finds an opposing player, can’t fault his defending but we cannot play him anymore purely due to the fact he gives away possession 90% of the time.
The players underperformed and Moyes was too late in bringing in the changes.
They were shite and we will beat them at their gaffe comfortably with Arteta in and their two centre backs banned.
34 Posted 21/09/2007 at 14:20:08
I’m not one of the people claiming that we play poor football. I have been and still am pro-Moyes, but what I saw last night was extremely worrying to say the least. I don’t ask for us to be more attacking, especially in a home match where away goals are at a premium against a team we should beat without too much trouble.
I’m not asking him to rip into his players in the public spotlight. I’m asking him to be honest. To hold his hands up and say I fucked up, the players didn’t perform and it will be corrected.
It was his lame attempt to blame the ref and not look at him and his boys that pisses me off.
Also, I don’t really rate Hibbert, even defensively. I can think of at least 2 or 3 goals conceded this season alone that were down to him. But he was far from the worst player on the pitch last night and his passing was far from the worst.
35 Posted 21/09/2007 at 15:06:13
Well done lad you’ve strung a sentence together this week. Spellings still a bad though. This week I give you a C+ keep up the effort.
