Err, how about a short one:

An under strength and under confidence side go to Villa Park looking to erase the embarassment of last Thursday night. Expect Moyes to plump with Neville in midfield and Hibbert at right back and come back with fucking nowt. Expect a style of play that renders our forward line completely redundant further damaging player morale and making us look like effin footballing numtpties. Expect more of the same folks until god knows when

Aston Villa could prove a tough proposition for Everton on their own turf tomorrow.
Defence
As a unit, Villa are a big side, particularly at the back.

Curtis Davies, on-loan from West Bromwich Albion is a highly-rated player but he was left on the bench at Eastlands last week so it will be interesting to see whether Martin O?Neill starts with him this time out.

Last week, Villa went with a back four of Olof Mellberg and Wilifred Bouma in the full-back positions and Martin Laursen and Zat Knight in the centre-back berths.

I noticed that all of them seem to be reasonably quick in their stride but being big men it does tend to take them a step or two to get into things.

Given this, there?s a certain amount of scope for the pace of Andrew Johnson or Yakubu to get some joy running at them.

At right-back, Swede Mellberg is stuck out of his natural position in the heart of the defence and subsequently he tends to drift back inside to the centre where he feels more at home.

As a result there could be plenty of spaces down the left flank for Everton to exploit. David Moyes could well employ a different formation to the bold 4-3-3 he went with at home to Metalist on Thursday night so it remains to be seen who will play down the left.

Even if it?s not Leon Osman, James McFadden or Mikel Arteta who is struggling with injury, there could be an opening there for Everton?s left-back Leighton Baines who likes to get forward.

He?s a good young player who I saw a lot of at Wigan and he?s impressed me the way he?s settled in since his move to Goodison and he often overlaps.

Midfield

THE two Villa wide men, Gabriel Agbonlahor and Ashley Young, have real pace and both are natural strikers who will look to stretch Everton?s midfielders.

Villa will be looking for their wingers to create holes through the middle and it?s important that Everton?s midfield unit remains compact in order to help their own full-backs.

Agbonlahor and Young will be looking to create one-on-one situations with Tony Hibbert and Baines and try and get past the full-backs.

In the middle of the park Villa have got new boy Nigel Reo-Coker who was their big money signing from West Ham over the summer but it?s skipper Gareth Barry who pulls all the strings.

He?s coming into this game on the back of a great couple of weeks for him following two great games for England.

While he lacks pace, Barry is good on the ball and the pass he threaded through to Michael Owen while on international duty showed what he?s capable of.

Everton?s holding midfielders such as Lee Carsley, Phil Neville or even Phil Jagielka, if he plays, must get into Barry and ensure that he is not allowed to dictate things.

Attack

IT?S the classic big man-little man combination up front for Villa at the moment.

Luke Young likes to feed off the flick-ons that John Carew provides him with.

Norwegian international Carew is a good target man but Moore can sometimes be a bit erratic although he?s scored a few goals when out on loan.

Dangerman

GARETH BARRY loves to disguise a pass. He?ll look one way and the slide the ball in the opposite direction between the centre-back and full-back.

Overall verdict

I BELIEVE this could be an open game but I think it will end in a draw.

Everton?s trip to Villa Park heralds the 185th top-flight meeting between these two Football League originals. Both Everton and Villa lost their last Premier League outings against Manchester clubs ? Villa beaten 1-0 away by Manchester city at Eastlands? and we don?t need reminding about what happened at Goodison last week when things could (and should) have been so much better.

Everton come into this game with fitness doubts to Arteta, Gravesen and Howard, joining long term absentees Cahill and Vaughan. The potential loss of the midfield craft shop raises several what ifs regarding formation, tactics and personnel. Would Arteta?s recovery stymie the tried and tested tactic of aimless alehouse punts into the oppositions half to isolated forwards? Will we see the return of 10-men-behind the-ball deep defending as the inevitable lost possession from percentage football gives the opposition the initiative? Will the Moyes match plan(?) again centre around trying to bypass our patched-up, no-evidence-of-passing-ability midfield; which at the moment seems as weak as a cup of Aggie?s Bullens Rd tea and as fragile as AJ?s confidence?

One thing is certain, the lads will need to pick themselves up after their lively but limp performance against the Metalists on Thursday evening and the big question for the fans has got to be is there any steel in this Everton side?

Is there an individual who is capable of upping his game and those around him to inspire Everton to a much needed confidence boosting away win?

Who will stand up and be counted when we get the inevitable penalty?

The obvious point being; if we win we leapfrog above Liverpool and into second position behind an imperious Arsenal ? That?ll shut us moaners up? won?t it?

That’s not bad, Kevin. I think I prefer it to Colin Harvey’s (!) man-for-man analysis (although it’s clear now what Moyesey’s been missing in the back room: someone smart enough to go through the opposing team and point out how the Blues need to be set up to take them on.

You’re in the lead so far, Sparkey... hampered only by the grevious sin of mispelling "Graveson" and "Vaughn". (I fixed them above) Tsk, tsk.

Preview Michael ?

How about don?t waste your money going to see this tripe and the only reason for watching this match on TV might be to see the only team in the Premier that is consistently more boring than Everton - poor old Martin?s sleepy hollow Aston Villa.

If that doesn?t make us feel better as Evertonians - never mind -I?ve got my excuses all lined up for this next debacle.

Injuries to key players............the referee should have sent two of their players off...
we should have had a penalty............or even two pens.

Yeah - I know this stuff is not original - a fair few folks used it as recently as our last shambles.

New one ? The players can?t understand Moyes and Irvine?s accents.

Last straw ? Mr Moyes is doing fine and in another few years we will be regular challengers for a top five place and we might even win a cup tie or two.

This IS by miles the most expensive squad we have ever had at Everton.

Preview ....let?s hope for some lucky breaks at Villa...................and if it is any consolation I still hold my pre-season opinion that there will be no trophies for either the Red Cornflakes or us this season.

I can?t see Man City winning a trophy either but they are a lot of fun to watch..........now when did you last hear anybody....friend or foe......say that about Everton ?

Get a grip EFC........enough is enough !

Everton go into the game at Villa needing to put behind them the last two results and focus on this game to regenerate some momentum for the up-coming matches.
Villa Park is never an easy ground to visit but Like Everton Villa can be a Jekyll and Hyde team, on their day capeable of beating any premiership team, as proved last season when Beating Chel;sea.
David Moyes really needs to earn his money on Sunday and there are some decisions that if he is to take Everton forward he must make.
If Arteta is not playing then he must look to play a 4-4-1-1 with Neville reverting to right back and Jagyeklka comi9ng into midfield with Carsley with Osman and McFadden making up the quartet.
Yakubu and Johnson will start and I believe Johnson will prove a handful for the Villa defense and may just end his goal drought.
The Team really need to play as a tight unit and Moyes must use all his motavational skills to bring the best out of his players, because make no mistake if we lose concentration or do not compete for the full 90 minutes Villa will exploit any weakness.
The Blues have a great oportunity to move into 2nd placeand an away win is a likely result.

Match Preview.

We have had our customary two good performances (per year) for this season already so statistics indicate that the performance from Everton tomorrow is likely to be dire and we will be heading for a defeat. The slide from the heady heights of top of the league two weeks ago is set to continue due to the inability of Everton Football Club to invest quality, especially in the midfield, to anything beyond two players. In their absence the tactic of pumping balls at head height down the middle of the pitch is likely to continue and the suicide rate amongst Evertonians is set to continue to rise.

Injuries notwithstanding, professional footballers earning more in a week than I earn in a year should be able to find each other with 10 yard passes. Unfortunately, as far as Everton are concerned, this is not the case. So expect the embarrassment of Thursday to continue.

Or I could be wrong!

Following a disappointing and ultimately frustrating return of european football to Goodison Park on Thursday night, attentions turn back to the Premiership where Everton travel to an Aston Villa side who themselves will be looking to bounce back following a close defeat to Man City last weekend.

Everton go into the game with no fresh injury worries, but are still unlikely to see a return to the side for Arteta, Gravesen and Howard.

After a performance against Metalist on Thursday that again raised question marks over the ability of Tony Hibbert to actually play football, is there an excuse to shuffle the pack and move Neville into the right back position and bring Jagielka into central midfield with Carsley? Or will Moyes stick with the Neville-Carsley partnership that worked so well against Tottenham at White Hart Lane last month?

Both Johnson and Yakubu had disappointing games midweek, and with Johnson still without a goal this season, and the yak looking about as interested as Moyes would be reading a joke book, will Anichebe be given the nod, having looked more like the £11M signing when he came on as a sub on Thursday?

Mcfadden and Osman flatter to deceive, but with no other options in midfield and the possibility of reverting to a 4-5-1 formation, don’t be surprised to see them both involved from the start. In goal, Wessels has looked decent and should have no problems continuing to deputise for Howard.

Villa will look to return to the form which accounted for Chelsea in their last home game. Martin O’Neill could name an unchanged team for the third Premier League game in a row, with Marlon Harewood out injured.

Villa are a decent side with a strong British core, so a draw would be a decent return from this game. A win would see us push up to 2nd in the league and would represent a very pleasing start to our domestic campaign. Expect a tight game, with maybe just the odd goal seperating the two teams.

Everton go to Villa Park on Sunday (KO 2pm UK Time) needing to make amends for a sorry, tactically inept, insipid display against Metallist in the UEFA cup on Thursday.

On a positive note, due to his performance in the aforementioned match, Andy Johnson has received a call-up to the England squad and will start in their next match, at fly half, against Tonga.

Meanwhile more good news, Phil Neville and Tony Hibbert’s boot makers (Barnums Circus) have vigorously denied that their footwear has any adverse affects on the players ability to kick a ball... citing the fact that Coco the clown doesn’t have any trouble with the boots (despite him currently being out with a metatarsal).

Everton look destined to revert to a 4-4-2, or even 4-5-1 against such tricky opponents; who will start is anyones guess... bet rest assured... Alan Irvine has scribbled the team down on a piece of paper and passed it to David Moyes.

Victor Anichebe did more than enough in midweek to warrant a start, so will rightly be rewarded with a place on the bench... James McFadden will retain his place in the headless chicken role interchanging with Leon Osman (piggy in the middle role) when he gets tired. Yakubu will spearhead the attack and look tired and disinterested from the first whistle.

Moyes has heeded the warning from fans about the side needing more width and the ability to supply nice crosses and has drafted in Pavarotti’s corpse and Pope Benedict (on free transfers from Modena and the Vatican respectively) to deal with these two issues.

Hopefully we will see some exciting football, hopefully Arteta will be back and Gravesen fit to take over in central midfield in place of captain marvel... if not expect a barrage of Garryowens into the general direction of the Villa penalty area for Everton’s vertically challenged strikers to try and out-jump the likes of Olaf Mellberg and Zat Knight...or defense splitting passes towards the opposition corner flags for Andy Johnson to chase and pass back to Tony Hibbert... watching as the ball ends up in the Holt end for the umpteenth time.

Players to watch: Tim Cahill / James Vaughan

Prediction: Villa 3 Everton 8

Villa are cack, so are we, should be a cracker!! Speaking of cack, so is the yack, a desperate piece of business, we all had doubts. Simply not in the moyes or evertonian mould, lazy man not an everton man. thought he was having a heart attack on thursday..so unfit. Hate to single out but if Hibbert is dropped we stand a chance, the man is a walking disaster area. Despite training every day for 5 years the man has amazingly gone backward?s how can this be? you must improve, or am i missing something. Hate to say but we have fucked up in the summer, central midfield was a priority but we are left with Neville and Car?s heaven help us

of Blue Smirnoff, before I attempt
to go to Villa park, a mate suggested, I try this remedy as it will help me analyse, what I am about to watch.

Anthony Newell should do all the match previews from now on.
He wouldn’t need to alter his original, apart from mentioning who Everton will be toiling against and when.
