Liver-bird

Okay, after all the midweek claptrap, I needed a change. Friday night lights at town with a couple of friends should do the trick. But then I bumped into an ex-classmate from secondary school, and she was with her girlfriends. One of them is a real beauty, and we really hit it off. I asked her out the next day and she accepted.

Like I said, we really hit it off, and during the date, things just fell right in place and I really got a feeling she might be IT. And then, she told me would we like to hit the pub to watch a game. Had no idea she was a fan until she told me she's a Red.

And not just any Red, not like those girls who convert because their boyfriends are, or because their favorite color is red, or because it's the glamorous thing to do, but a real, bonafide, whole family is a Red deal. I couldn't say no, so I spend 2 hours sitting stumped while these crazy-ass Reds around me shouted hoarse for their team. And this beauty can dish those words out! I barely cracked a grin when Birmingham held them 0-0.

The thing about it is she had little problem when I told them I eat toffee for breakfast, lunch and dinner. She even thought it funny. But not me.

So I'm thinking in the city of Liverpool, this might be a common thing. I've heard families being Red and Blue, couples, best friends and such. Maybe the readers here have such experiences. Thing is, I hate Liverpool (of course), but I HATE Liverpool fans (in Singapore, especially) even more. It's been that way since my school days. If I am to be serious with this girl, I have to get along with her family, go over and watch a game, biting my lip throughout. Does this sound trivial? Is my blue blood clogging up my brain? Advice needed and sought!

Pal. if you like her who cares!!! All the better she likes footy.

Honestly though, why does this get submitted and my valid request for pubs, where the game (tomorrow) might be on, gets ignored!?

:(!!

Drop her now before you become too serious!! There are some lovely Evertonian girls out there to share your passion - go find one!!

Sorry mate, it just doesn’t have any mileage. I tried this myself many years back and you have to put aside your hatred for them and reach a cosy consensus. To maintain this requires a high degree of effort with some regular complimentary exchanges that would make you wince, bollocks like "really think that riise was a good acquisition for you" returned with "somebody like barry horne is just what we need in our midfield at the minute". Of course all this disingenuous piffle gets blown out of the water during the heat of a Derby game and I seem to remember Hutchison’s disallowed goal allowing all that red-hating venom come to the surface with some grandeur!

Hi Mik, I married into a Blue/Red situation and to be honest its had some fraught moments especially as I have chinned the brother in law on two ocassions.
Its not easy mate but if she knows her football and is not a Gobshite as a right of passage, it can work.
Its the rest of the family you have to be aware of, especially around Christmas, boxing Day has always been tough for me and for the brother in law !!!

Mik, if she doesn’t seem to care about it, then why should you? In Singapore, most of the RS hate Manc fans more than they hate us coz we haven’t been a blip in their radar for 2 decades. In fact, although I love taking the piss out of my Red mates, they still try to persuade me to "stick together" when they play Man U. (I then of course laugh, give them the finger and hope for a draw!)

Since she doesn’t seem to have the inbred hatred for our club, it could possibly work out. You can turn derby games with the family into a cheeky rivalry thing. At the end of the day, you’ll only potentially have to sleep on the couch 2 days a year. If she ticks all the right boxes in other areas, could be worth getting into bed with the dark side.

On the other hand, if she was dead, you wouldn’t be having this dilemma. Just sayin’ :D

Mik it will work if you are only rivals on derby day - Ive been married to a kopit for 10 years. Humour her and say you rate Finnan and Reina and you have them in your fantasy team - if you still cant get through it ditch her - but make sure you give her one first.
