Next penalty taker?

Comments (7)

I heard Alan Irvine spouting on before on Radio City that if Johnson wants to take the next penalty, then he will be allowed to do so. I can see how this might "buy" confidence but I wouldn't let him near a penalty until he is scoring freely again in open play ? which might be some time, given the neanderthal tactics employed!

I don't see that Beattie scoring two pens last year did much for his confidence. Nor would I put Johnson ahead of Arteta as a penalty taker. The statement by Irvine just seems to highlight the lack of willingness by the EFC management to a) accept that anything is wrong and b) try somthing different.

It would be better then if he said. " No fucking way is he taking another Pen".

I am sure that would give the lad the boost he needs. If AJ decides to take the next penalty (Iwill be suprised if he does) well good luck to him.

....or perhaps none of his team mates has stepped up to the plate in Arteta’s absence. I didn’t see too many wanting to take the third one on Thursday night. If a player is forced to take a pen then the chances are he will miss. One willing volunteer is better than 10 pressed men and all that.
Penalties are all about confidence and it appears that there isn’t too much of that around the team at the moment, despite what Phil Neville might say !!
At this moment in time Johnson need our SUPPORT not our barracking, get behind him and if, and this is a big if, WE PLAY TO HIS STRENGTHS he will come good. I,for one, wish him every success.

In what way would it be better than Johnson being told "No way!". Are they not big enough for the truth? I remember years ago Peter Withe scoring a hat trick for Forest and asking Cloughie if he could take the ball home only to be told "not until you’ve learnt how to play with it." Perhaps it could be based on what they do on the practice ground.

Yakubu should take pens, as he has a very good record !

I suspect this is just public support for AJ, and it makes sense. If Arteta or Yakubu are on the pitch, expect one of them to grab the ball for the pens.
