New Stadium

Comments (25)

If I have already sent this piece of news I apologise but just to keep us all "in the loop" so to speak, I recently passed by Porto's stadium built for the 2004 European Championships. The resemblance to "our loop" is striking. It is surrounded by motorways and ordinary roads, is highly developed with xhousing and general commercial premises and I believe the capacity is arounf 55000. If they can do it in Portugal - and remember they constructed about 6 new stadia for this event - why can't we ?

I must say I was impressed by the developement of Celtic Park. "new stands and infastructure for offices plus an hotel as well as seating for 25600 fans in two new state of the art stands." This was all done for a cost of £26m. I must be stupid but why can't Kenwright & Co do something similar at Goodison?

It looks a helluva lot bigger than the Loop site to me. If this means nothing else, it removes the need to support parts of the stadium on stilts over the surrounding roads. This would be VERY expensive as would be the need for access bridges (at least one for each side of the stadium)in order to get any Loop design past the health and safety inspection. With sufficient resources almost ANYTHING can be built almost ANYWHERE (Jeez, for the price of the Iraq war we could have a stadium built on stilts in the middle of the river at the Pier Head) but we do not have the resources. The Loop site is just too small and too expensive.

They can do it Portugal cos it’s still a free country which isn’t controlled by supermarkets, health and safety extremists, yes-men and small minded local media.

From Andy Birch’s comment (which appears to be in wrong thread below) I’ve checked out this great link http://www.barr.co.uk/brochures/stadia.pdf
There are some great works in there (considering the costs quoted) Celtic’s two new stands with over 25,000 seats for 12million pounds seems VERY impressive. Many of the contracts are for relatively small amounts. Judging by this recent barr document, plus taking some inflation into account, it seems for 50million we’d get an up to date great big belter of a stadium with no obstructed views! Get in there...looks like we will have a stadium fit for us Royal Blue Blooded ’Kirkby Kings’ of Merseyside!!

Mike, aren’t those costs just the contract value to Barr?

Ie. not including raw material costs etc? Otherwise those stands are a bargain price, and the like of Ashburton Grove were a rip off. No?

Wyness and Kenwright wont get a bung off Tescos if the club goes to the Loop

The reason why we cant have it is £££, no investment, no public money and no idea about planning regulations. forget it it is not going to happen

Tony, where is your evidence that Wyness and Kenwright will get a bung from Tescos?

Dan,
I’d be surprised if those figures excluded materials. Most D&B contracts cover all aspects of the design and build (including materials). What may be over and above is the ’fit out’ of the Stadium - carpets and curtains, if you like :o).
One thing is for sure, with the price of steel going through the roof (pardon the pun) building anything is only going to get more and more expensive, so the sooner, the better.

Personally, I preferred the idea of the Loop, but and it’s a huge but.. with the extra time it would take, the complexity of the design and engineering challenge it’s painfully clear that it’s beyond our means. Gutted, but there you go.

I reckon Tony is getting a bung off Bestway as he’s banging on about it that much.

Anyway Porto’s satdium wouldn’t fit on the lop it’s too big.

Shaun are you an idiot? Don’t you get it?

We are in bed with tesco as you put because we HAVE NOT GOT THE MONEY TO GO ALONE... its very simple, we have not got a choice.

When are the NO Jokers going to give up? What part of NO MONEY, NO SUPPORTIVE LOCAL COUNCIL, NO INVESTMENT FROM MULTI MILLIONARES/BILLIONAIRES do you NO Jokers not understand?!
You bleat on and on about conspiracy theories concerning BK & Kw & Tesco & KCC , (if I was any one of them had have you all for deformation of character)you go on abiut rebuilding Goodison, getting the loop (funny how thats all gone quiet from Bestway all of a sudden)? Business is run how business is run and EFC is a business and have landed themselves a deal where they don’t have to foot the cost of building a stadium.. NOW WHAT IS WRONG WITH THAT! Now, if any of you have any ideas of attracting inward investment forward them to the board!!

Joe Monks, I’ll tell you whats wrong with it.
1. It’s in the wrong location
2. It’s a shite tin shack of a stadium.
3. It’s in the wrong location
4. It will be commercial suicide
5. It’s in the wrong location
6. Most of the fans don’t want to move to Kirkby
7.IT’S IN THE WRONG LOCATION.

Joe Monkey, also its not going to be free! The Club will still have too lay out a reasonable amount of money. Also we haven’t heard from Bestway because the club will not meet with them! So i just wish that some of you YES jokers will get that. FFS! Defamation suits you must be a complete donkey!

DAN: I’m no expert but would assume it must include materials etc (otherwise would seem rather excessive).

Didn’t we just take out a £20m loan last month to fund the moves for Yakubu and Fernandes? And aren’t we going to be taking out a loan in region of £30m (probably higher) for Kirby? Seems like that would’ve been enough to build a couple of new stands, including corporate boxes at Goodison.

Don’t say it can’t be done. Tom Hughes (apologies if I’ve got the wrong person!) went to great lengths to show it could.

Ian Martin, a high proportion of yes voters on this site say they would prefer to stay in the city if there was another option. The fact is there ARE other options if Kenwright and Wyness had the wisdom, will and vision of some of our supporters to explore.
How anybody can get excited by everton moving out of town is beyond me.
I am not impressed with the way things are going on the pitch at present but the Kirkby thing is a massive distraction to me.
Steve Pugh
25   Posted 28/09/2007 at 22:56:08

Like Kevin said. A good number of YES voters only voted YES becaused of a lack of options. If an option within the city could be found they would go for it. Isn’t it up to us as evertonians to keep looking and encourage the board to keep looking for that alternative right up until the point that the crappy (I mean kirkby) deal is signed sealed and delivered.
