To the Editors:

There's always one player the crows hates and now it's Hibbert. It's like a snowball gathering moss and is making his future as an Everton player pretty much untenable. It's not his fault the manager keeps picking him and what great crime has he committed to deserve to be pilloried in your pages.

Why do you allow e.mails with pages of comments which are no more than long diatribes about How shit such and such is? It currently seems to be Hibbert has formerly been Simon Davies, Beattie, etc.

Reasoned debate as to why P Neville or Jagielka should be full back, ok, but long-winded witch hunts and vendettas are hardly fitting with the term "Everton Supporter".

Its embarrassing and destructive that everytime Hibbert or to a lesser extent Osman gets the ball the murmurs begin. It's even happened to our record sigining in his first home game! Are we supporters or just moaners - Get behind the players and the team (despite how shit they are sometimes) and who knows they might even improve.

Yes indeed, Phillip, there's always one.

There's always one Everton Supporter who feels his opinion overrides all others.

There's always one Everton Supporter who feels the need to define what is and is not "fitting" for all the other Everton Supporters to be thinking, saying or doing.

There's always one Everton Supporter who wants us not to publish e.mails he doesn't agree with.

To my knowledge, a healthy critique of players who are not performing has always been part and parcel of the Everton Way. Isn't that a direct corollary of the club motto? Or are we not supposed to make reference to that any more?

No-one is asking you to moan or whine or complain about the players if you don't want to. That's entirely your affair. But what are trying to do? Elimeinate moaning and groaning?!?

Please, have the good grace to accept that fans have the right to express their dissatisfaction as they see fit, if they so choose. This is still a (relatively) free country... or are you looking to impose mind and behavioural control... starting with the Evertonians? Good luck!?!

Philip, a few years ago we had a team full of shit players and now we have a team with one or two shit players. Once Osman and Hibbert have been replaced then there will be no-one else to moan at. Oh sorry add Neville to that as well, although he can play well sometimes.

I do agree with Philip though because its really counter-productive to continually bully Hibbert.

Hibbert’s a fairly decent defender who does his primary job (defending) pretty well.

Sure it would be nice if Hibbert could also provide an attacking option like Baines does but his primary job to defend, just like a strikers primary job is to score goals (take note AJ).

Hibbert’s a local lad, a true blue, one of us. In my book that cuts him a little more slack.

Michael:

The meaning of our motto is continuously misinterpreted by yourself and other posters on this board. It doesn?t mean we as supporters have a god given right to the most attractive style of play by the worlds best players and it doesn?t mean our new stadium should be the best stadium that has ever been built in the whole world. It actually refers to what is expected in terms of commitment by the players - i.e. they?re extected to go out and give it their best regardless of their actual ability. In my opinion Hibbo goes out and gives 100% even if he?s not the best player in the world (NB he?s not half as bad as some people make out)

Michael what does corollary mean
I looked up Wilkpedia
In mathematics, a corollary is a statement which follows readily from a previously proven statement, typically a mathematical theorem. The use of the term corollary, rather than proposition or theorem, is essentially subjective. Proposition A is a corollary of proposition B if A can readily be deduced from B, but the meaning of readily varies depending upon the author and context. Sometimes a corollary has a proof that explains the derivation; sometimes the derivation is considered to be self-evident.

I don’t understand big words very well, and really should not be using them. I thought I was using it in the sense of "something that naturally follows"... which is what it says in my dictionary. In this instance "Nothing but the best is good enough" and you are not providing the best and thererefore it naturally follows that we should provide some critical feedback." Ergo, a corollary?

i have just seen the best news on the everton website "HIBBERT INJURED" and it goes on to say that he is a doubt due to a groin strain. Please leave him out. Lets all beg to Moyes to do so.
BTW are we wearing the pink shirts this weekend for ladies day. I think they look rather good. It will give us a good word for certain

"To my knowledge, a healthy critique of players who are not performing has always been part and parcel of the Everton Way. Isn’t that a direct corollary of the club motto? Or are we not supposed to make reference to that any more?"

So, Michael, is comment after comment verbosely stating "Hibbert is shit" meeting your definition of a healthy critique? Or is it muppets jumping on a bandwagon they don’t understand? How does blithely stating "Hibbert is shit" benefit Hibbert, Everton, us the supporters or even the commentator?

Let’s be honest here: Hibbert isn’t shit. He’s a more talented footballer than 99.9% of the people on this website, or those who bay from the stands. He’s also a very limited footballer, no arguments there. Is he the best right-back at the club? No, I don’t think so. Is he of Premiership quality? Well, if we sold him in the morning, would another Premiership club buy him? At a guess, I’d say yeah they probably would. He’s no worse, or more limited, than 50% of the full backs currently in the Premiership. If he got his confidence back, he might even be a viable option for lots of teams.

"Nil Satis Nisi Optimum" should, I feel, also fairly apply to Evertons’ supporters. I would posit that if "Hibbert is shit" is the absolute best a poster can come up with, then they really shouldn’t be satisfied with their level of education. Don’t be hypocritical. If the club has to stand by this Latin motto, then the rent-a-gob supporters should also. Take a look at your lives and see how many boxes you can tick where you’ve adhered to the motto. I’d imagine the answers will fit on the back of a postage stamp.

So please, by all means criticise Hibbert. Dissect his performances and provide reasoned and intelligent commentary on his weaknesses and failures. But don’t revert to "Hibbert is shit" because it’s embarrassing for us all.

I have to agree with Philip on the Tony Hibbert issue. It is not a healthy critique which appears on a number of posts but rather a sequence of nasty, personal attacks from people who hide behind the safety of their web browser. I am certain that many of the authors who post such diatribe would not have the courage to stand in front of the lad and make those statements to his face. Healthy criticism yes, personal abuse and victimisation no. It does your site no favours Michael to allow such ill considered and quite vicious bile to be aired so easily and without comment. Most of the nastier events in world history started off by looking for scapegoats. You would do well to learn from the past.

I agree with the EFC motto but in today’s times i also believe it may have a slightly different meaning than when it was originally conceived. I don’t agree with berating Hibbert, Osman or anyone else. They are two of us lucky enough to pull on the royal blue shirt most weeks. Support those who wear the shirt. OK, so i think that as a sign of how far we have progressed Hibbo is now the weakest link in defense but it’s not that long ago that he was pretty much the only defender we could have relied upon to get a tackle in. I may be biased as someone who has supported EFC for about 25 years but listening to fans of other clubs EFC has special support. We live and breathe the club. We don’t just turn up on a Saturday. We live it. We love it. We may sound like we are the biggest complainers but we analyse it more, we read into it more, and dare i say it we care more.

We have a chairman like that, we have a manager like that, we have some (many) players like that. We may not always win, we may not always play the best football but nil satis nisi optimum. And as a collective we are the best. I get such a special feeling from within at simply being an Evertonian no matter what the result and i know i’m not alone. Get behind the manager, the players, the club.

We are Everton. No matter what the result. We are on a different level.

I think the boo boys have destroyed hibbos confidence. Evertonians are great fans when they like someone, but by good can they destroy someone if they don’t like him. The only person I have even seen win the crowd over was Mark Pembridge. He was so determined. A real pro. All he ever did was give it his all and people booed him. That is just out of order. I was so glad when when he won the corwd around. Its the only time I’ve ever seen it.

Hibbert is not a Cafu, but he’s a sloid defender and has not done much wrong this season. Remember that Jagielka can play right back and Moyes is under pressur eto play him. Full back is such a hrad position to play. You’ve got to help the back four as well as getting forward and whipping in crosses from the bye line and then have to sprint all the way back when a move breaks down. Hibbo is so short on confidence you can see him question himself on getting forward. There is such a difference between him and Baines in terms of confidence. Of course Baines looks class and is a lot better attacking than Hibbo. Lets just lay off Hibbo and let him rebuild his confidence. Defensively he has not done much wrong this season. His biggest crimes indefence have usually been trying to cover up for his collegues mistakes and just missing out on last ditch tackles or blocks.

Tony Hibbert is first and foremost a defender ...and a good one at that , however his distribution and passing ability is awful , we lose a lot of possession from his ill-placed passes which in turn puts pressure on the defence and midfield to regain the ball , I like Hibbo , he’s a blue , a scouser and always gives 100% and in some games where the emphasis is just to stop a winger then there’s nobody better at the club but in these games someone tends to come closer to him to collect the ball . As far as picking on him as scapegoat of the month then in one way , perversely , i’m glad he’s regarded as our worst player , because if the rest of the team are better than him then we must have a very good team !

Perhaps it is the managers intransigence or just plain stubbornness that leads to these comments. It has, after all, been obvious to more or less everybody that Hibbert is struggling at the moment but Moyes continues to select him come hell or high water.
There comes a time when it is best for everybody, especially the player, to give a player a rest. However our glorious manager seems to believe that the more folks moan about a player the more likely he is to keep him in the team !
There is a perverse logic about this but it is doing neither Hibbert nor Everton any good whatsoever.

I am finally warming to this site when I see there are actually evertonians who use it for constructive criticism and not just to fire completely pointless and harsh criticism.
Most people agree that hibbo is/was a good defender and prob just needs a rest. I am just waiting for the next post in a couple of months that says ’Neville/Jags is shit’.
I remember when grav was being slated the season before everyone decided he was god! Stop being a bunch of fucking hypocrites!

For the record ,nowhere in my letter was I saying my opinion somehow overides all others or that you should’nt publish mails I don’t agree with. I for one don’t subscribe to the "I’m a better blue than you " nonsense which seems to accompany all of the stadium debates.

br />Your agressive reply makes the very point I was referring to.

ie in your words "A healthy critique of players has always been the Everton way"

What is appearing on these pages in relation to Tony Hibbert is not in any way shape or form "healthy critique"

Good luck !

Tony Hibbert:good tackler; can’t pass, can’t shoot, can’t cross, can’t beat a man, can’t get off the ground to head the ball and is always targeted by the oppo with crosses to far post where he is always beaten in the air; he is a scouser, he supports everton and I’m pretty certain he gives 100%..however if I played for Everton I’d pass those last three criteria...so nil points there..on the basis of his single strength and multiple weaknesses, he’s crap. I don’t boo him, but after the ball leaves his feet, I invariably find myself saying, "For Fuck’s Sake"...
John Lloyd
19   Posted 28/09/2007 at 10:44:09

Why oh Why do people keep insisting that Hibbert is a good defender??? He is involved in a lot of the goals we concede, his tackling is erratic at best. As I stated yesterday because a tackle is hard and the crowd like it does not make it good!!! A good tackle is completed when you come away with the ball or a shot cross is blocked. He does fucking neither. So stop all this ’he’s a good defender’ cos he’s fucking not.
He is a hard working, yet limited footballer who in my opinion should not be in Evertons first team. I believe playing Neville there with one eye on bringing someone in for next season has to be Moyes aim.
And to answer one more point, playing Jagielka is also a bad decision, he is a central player midfielder for now more likely defence as he matures. He could do a job right back as Yobo could & as Lescott could at left back. But we shouldn’t be aiming for people who will make do or do a job. We want quality all over the pitch, that HAS to be our aim.

Getting on players’ backs might work when they’re not trying, but my judgement is that Hibbert is giving it everything he’s got. Sure, he’s out of form and struggling but he needs encouragement, not abuse, to get his confidence back. Same goes for AJ. Let’s roar the lads on from the start on Sunday and watch them stuff Boro 5-0!

Excellent post, Declan. well-argued, and to the point. It will be interesting to see Michael’s response. By the way, I generally agree with Michael’s editorial stance ie ’all views welcome’ (and his use of ’corollary’ in the context he used it was perfectly acceptable!) He can tend to get a bit self-righteous, though!

Really pleased to see this thread. I think Neville’s Carling Cup performance strengthens the case that he and not Hibbo ought to be our first choice right back. But all this cheap scapegoating of a man who plays his heart out for Everton every week doesn’t help the team and doesn’t do us any credit.

The fickle fans of Everton barracking home grown players is really out of order, despite how shite Hibbert is playing. The lad has had several decent seasons he has limitations to his play, he probably is no better than a mid to lower end of the Premier player. I can remember Ratcliffe getting it in the late 80’s after all he did for the club.
How can players be expected to play well if they are turned on every week.
I was watching a Sunday league match once and someone barracked a player who came off the field and slugged him, pretty good job Eric Cantona never played for us.

For what it’s worth here are my thoughts:

Hibbert is a 100% player and a decent pro - never see him near the fron pages of a tabloid.

He is technically limited: good at tackling, distribution and positional play weak.

He is playing below his best form right now - but rember he had a very disjointed season due to injury last year.

Debate on this forum is fine - as long as it does not making people "trigger happy" when it comes to voicing their discontent at him during a match.

If only Michael had the similarly good grace not to label people as Moyes apologists because they don’t want him sacked after he’s turned the club around.

It’s just rank hypocrisy in my eyes.

Well said Philip.
I sometimes wonder if the players read this website and if they did, what they would think of our
’performance’ as able commentators on the game.
Give Hibbert a break for crying out loud.
Michael, I’m surprised at you. This is difinitely not healthy debate. The same sort of moronic attitiude also concludes that abuse and racism are acceptable vehicles for expressing our opinions.
It is completely counter productive to the performance of individuals and thus our team.
I remember going to a Wolves/Forest game years ago, where a kid 2 rows in front spent the entire match yelling out that Clough and his assistant Taylor were sexually involved. This brain out ranting is of the same level of intelligence.
We expect players to be loyal to our club and yet it doesn’t seem to apply to us as supporters. Strange, that.
Are good manners and reason a complete thing of the past?

32   Posted 28/09/2007 at 13:54:49

I remember not so long ago when Hibbert was playing out of his skin and Moyes was telling anyone who would listen that he had the potential to become an international player. He cant have suddenly turned into a bad player overnight. I dont think he is anywhere near the england set up even if he recaptures his previous form. He can tackle and would run through a brick wall if he was asked to for EFC, however he is a tad limited in many other areas of his game and is currently not playing at his best. In Neville we do have a player who is very comfortable at RB and does have more to his game than Hibbert, especially motivationally hence the reason he was made captain. If we were to put out our strongest side, even at the moment with injuries, Neville should eb RB. It really wont do Hibbert any harm to be taken out of the firing line during this dip in form.
