Jags

I know its only half time but isn't Jagielka awful? Talk about off the pace! I had high hopes for him when he signed but he looks to have all the manouverability of Claus Thomsen. Worrying, very worrying...

I thought it was just me, you know... being ultra-critical of our wonderful players. I thought he was attrocious. Baines wasn't much better either. It was like neither of them had any idea what the were supposed to be doing on the field. But guess what: WE WON, and we kept a CLEAN SHEET. Nothing else matters, apparently. Least of all the style of play. A shut-out was the requirement today; save ourselves for Thursday's daunting task.

Jags passing was awful today, I agree he looked well off the pace, but like Neville I believe he is far better in defence.

Jagielka’s distribution was beyond poor...combine that with Pip’s inability to pick out a pass and I’m glad we had Pienaar and Arteta on either side of them! Thought both of those two lads had very good games today. Disagree with Michael about Baines though - I thought he did OK... defended well and got forward to link up play where possible. Was there something I missed?

Had middlesbrough taken one of there 3 guilt edged chances in the first half, there is no way we would’ve gone on to win that game. jags and neville in centre mid were abysmal, devoid of any invention whatsoever

Although we won, it was horrid to watch. I make it 8 defensive minded outfield players on the pitch at the end of the match

What was encouraging was Pioneer, I thought he played really well today and I think his confidence is getter better too.

As for jags, my girlfriend was watching with me and asked who that player was. When I said jags she said "he’s shit". However, I think he is really good player so i am not worried.

A clean sheet and a win are something to build on. We’re still trying to integrate a few new players into the squad. Jag has looked good in midfield before, just had an off day today. Pienaar’s confidence visibly improved after his goal and he linked up well with Mikel. We played a number of good moves on the floor today and the second goal was a peach. A couple of great crosses from Hibbo and some solid defending were a good response to some criticism and overall i saw a number of positives to build on today.

While I would agree with you Michael that we should not accept crap football, regardless of the result, I think today was one of those games when a trade off was acceptable.
After the last couple of results a win was needed to stop the rot. I’m not happy about the style of play, or the substitutions, but just to get a win and some confidence, I will accept the trade.
I do think though that Thursday ought be a different story. Not only would an emphatic win in europe would go a long way in terms of proper confidence, but considering how messy the first leg was, nothing else would surfice.

Michael what are you trying to suggest? That something else does matter? Does it fuck: 3 points, 5th in the prem and a clean sheet they’re the facts lad. If you’re not happy with the style of play get used to it because i’m sure moyes would rather play like that and win and play like boro did today and get beat.

Jags played very average game, poor really. He can play better. 5.

Finally some good passing at going forward, but our our passing was still not good enough. Some good attacking, but where’s possesion of ball, like Boro had in first half many times.

An their finishing was rubbish.

McFadden played one of his best games without a goal in my opinition.

So frustrated because playing so defensivility style in second half. If VDM has any future in our club, why Yobo comes in and later Cars. I’ve liked to see VDM to come in for SP after his goal just to see can he do something to justify his place in first team (were 2-0 and Boro was destroyed).

Why on earth we were fucking pleased to winning the game 2-0?? Especially when Boro had to change Mido off and minutes later chinese lad off. They hadn’t any strikeforce left and DM wanted more defending players. They should have tried to find another goal because their selfbelief.

Jags had a poor game the lad is a fullback. Sheff Utd played him at the back.
Hibbert did ok he kept Downing quiet.
Yakubu was lazy and missed a sitter.
Cant wait for Vaughan and Cahill to come back.

Jags was dire. Neville (as always in midfield) was dire. BUT; we won, so well done to the rest of the team! Round of applause in particular to Tony Hibbert; I thought he was much improved today. Fingers now crossed for Thursday!

Jags was poor today. Passing was all over the place and, particularly in the first half, his tackling was also rubbish. I wonder if he’s really good enough to play in midfield.

Hibbert was much better, but he will need to play like that consistently. Even then he would be second choice for me. His passing was ok today and Downing got no change out of him.

Pienaar was a real bonus I thought. Nice movement, good closing down and energy levels. Hopefully the confidence will see him improve even more.

This was no polished performance but a great result. I’m sorry, but I don’t agree with the argument of pushing for a third. 2-0 was exactly what the doctor ordered and nobody can tell me they wanted a last 10min nightmare. We can work on the performances, but coming off the back of the last few results, we were never likely to hammer them. I do agree that Shandy might have been a good shout for 5 or 10mins.

At least we showed signs that we are capable of pass and move, even if it was only in patches.

Jagielka and Neville where awful and to be honest you would expect that from two fullback playing centre midfield. When will Moyes learn that either one or the other should be playing right back.

Baines wasn’t awful but he was very average. I’ll excuse him because he has been brilliant over the past four games.

I have been saying for ages that Pienaar should be playing instead of Osman yet people’s responces where he’s to small or to lightweight. He gives us so much more than Osman. Pace, trickness, hardworker and hopefully an eye for goal judging by today. He is not a natural out and out winger but he is neat and tidy and helps us keep the ball better.

Hopefully Gravesen will be back next week and we can move either Neville or Jagielka to fullback. We are in desperate need for someone who can dictate the play and he’s the man for that job.

It was not only Jags who was bad today. The whole team seems to have lost the knack of retaining possession. Why does DM keep playing Neville in midfield? It’s as if he has to play him just because he’s the Captain. To be fair i thought Hibbert had one of his better games today. But generally i thought we were poor. But I’d take a poor display and a 2-0 win every time

When you put defenders in midfield they are not as comfortable in possesion as natural midfielders, hence our our lack of creativity and inability to retain possesion in midfield at the moment. I dont know about anyone else but I am keen to see how our style of midfield play changes once Arteta, Gravesen, Piennar plus a holding player are selected in midfield. Im still not convinced of Yakubu’s presence up front for £11.25m, but apart from that I think that once certain players are back from injury we will all see an improvement in results and style of play this season.

Think it’s a bit hard on Baines to knock him. He has been outstanding up to today. He wasn’t up to his usual standard but then again Lescott this time last year probably had the same.

Jags and Neville were very poor in centre mid yesterday. I’m delighted we got the result but also grateful we were playing Boro otherwise we could have had a very different scoreline.

Pienaar, Arteta, Lescott and McFadden played well which was good to see and yes a win is a win but I really can’t wait until Tim and Grav are back.
