Missed chance

Comments (30)

2-0 10mins to go surely it would have been an excellant chance to bring Van der Meyde on for a run out? But no, so we get Yobo and Carsley.

Sometimes Moyes's subs are really difficult to understand and its easy to understand how certain players could become very down-hearted.

Backs to the wall for the last 15 minutes. Yobo on and a statement of intent to shut up shop. Very negative indeed but we know that Moyes doesn’t like to twist the knife, negative bastard that he is. Neville in midfield and Hibbert at right back. This joker doesn’t have the trophies behind him to afford him this level of stubborness. Hardly convincing in my eyes but three points but sterner tests to follow in the next three games. Cue the apologists club (Barks, & Co) given our ’mini-revival’, once more

I think today proves how much work AJ puts in for us. Yak and Faddy were not good enough again! Hibbert was better today: great at one-on-one but can't attack and cross. Neville not a CM and was desperate to see Shandy Andy given 20 mins when 2-0 up. Arteta is god we look so much better with him. We just need Tiny Tim and Mad Dog back and we are off!!

Hibbert was pretty solid today and he put in a couple of excellent crosses. Negative Moyes? He didn’t go 5 at the back. He put Yobo on and moved Baines to left wing. I’ve read many a person on these pages say that they’d like Baines there from the start (not me i might add, he’s a left back, and our best one for years). VdM has hardly trained properly for a while. What’s the point in bringing him on? Jag did have a poor game today though. But it’s a win and a clean sheet and i think we were having a bit of fortune with some of Boro’s misses but we’ve been lacking a bit of luck of late. Thought they got a lot of soft free kicks though, but Riley isn’t the best.

"Very negative indeed but we know that Moyes doesn?t like to twist the knife, negative bastard that he is"

What are you talking about?

What is the point in going all out for a 3rd when they could go up the other end and score a goal. At 2.1 its anyones game as we have seen in the past.

Moyes shut up shop and got a good 2.0 win, a clean sheet which is very important and two goals, great result.

I felt genuinely sorry for the lad. Couldn’t even get a tiny run out on his birthday. I thought for sure Moyes would give him just a few minutes when Arteta came off but no, Cars comes on instead. I mean, would it have hurt that much to put him on with the lead we had and the time that was left? Andy must be gutted.

Including the goalkeeper, there were EIGHT defensive minded Everton players on the pitch at the end of the game ? and we were the home team. Jesus, they thought Walter Smith was bad!! Yet another helping of unimaginative, turgid dross served up by this tactically clueless, ultra defensive manager of ours. But we won 2-0 and we are fifth.... so fucking what.... it doesn't mean anything anymore!!!

I find the decision not to put VDM on for Arteta strange at that stage of the game.
I can understand Faddy being pulled off to keep him for Thursday.

Not convinced but a win is a win. Its clear we are hapless without the little Spaniard and he was class today again.
I agree a swap for Pienaar or Arteta last 10mins for Van Der Meyde would have been good, running at a tired boro defence, however, we sat too far back IMO and would have struggled against a classier strike force. judgement reserved for now but wel done all, and Moyesey for 3 points when it mattered.

Typical!

We win 2-0 after a pretty dodgy week with a none too shabby performance and the first posts on the site are effectively ’Moyes is tactically naive’ and ’Jagielka’s shit’, for god’s sake what is wrong with you people?

The most important thing today was to get 3 points and after that a clean sheet to give us confidence ahead of a massive match on Wednesday. Both of which were achieved.

Also, the subs made absolute sense. to me.

The Yak and MacFadden are both likely to play, so it makes sense to bring them off and Anichebe for the Yak is a straight swap giving the youngster more experience and a chance to play his way back in.

Yobo’s coming back into the side and is a contendor to start in the week) so it makes sense we bring him on to get him up to match speed and sharing in a clean sheet. What’s more Boro were still a threat from crosses, so again a speedy defender with good heading ability makes sense.

I agree we could have brought on Shandy for 10 minutes (maybe an earlier sub for Arteta) but then again Carsley is also likely to play on Wednesday and let’s face it there’s absolutely no way Shandy will be starting that match. He won’t even be on the bench if AJ is half-way fit.

An entirely convincing performance? Maybe not. A good result and a platform to build for a very tricky week? Job done.

Good shout Tony

was saying the same thing to me dad, didnt go to the game as live on the south coast (season ticket holder by the way )and would have had to leave at 7am this morn.
Shocked that Hibbert was there again, did OK against a shocking Boro, lets hope hes rested on Thursday

Nice to see that we have a true quality keeper (see his reaction after the first goal) legend...
Welcome back Mikel and didnt his mate do well along side him, not sure about the locks (must be an age thing)

Chris, your spot on mate!

Why is it that even after a half decent performance that the Boo boys on here first to whinge. It wasn’t the best game of football I’ve seen but there were a number of pluses which shouldn’t be overlooked. A number of phases of play where Everton managed to lpay the ball on the ground, to feet (does show what a difference Arteta makes to the sqad). I though Pienaar played well and its the first time I’ve seen glimpses of what I think he can do (slighty reminisent of Atreta in his first few games when he likely very dodgy).

As for Moyes, if I was him I would have brought the same people and made sure of the 3points -not a negative move, a shrewd move.

Well in that case David, play eleven defenders on and instruct them to stand on the goal line taking it turns to jump and down. With any luck we’d keep a clean sheet and you’d be 4kin made up

Wondered how long it’d take for someone to bring that up, Brian. And Nat, Allardyce agreed. And many other managers would agree. All the best sides pride themselves on clean sheets as a starting point. Christ you guys use whatever you can to make the point you want to make.

Nat - In big Sam’s defence he said ’it is for managers like David and myself who were defenders throughout our careers’.

He’s right as well.

As much as I was hoping to see Andy VDM in, I actually understand Moyes’ reasoning on this one. VDM just came back from suspension. He has to prove to the club his committment and work ethic. Moyes put him on the bench to give him a little taste of what he has been missing. Now that he has that taste again, he has to continue to work hard in practice and show his desire for first team appearances week in and week out. It’s baby steps... I will bet that sooner rather than later he will get a run out if he continues to stay out of trouble.

Wanted to see VDM..(on his 28th ..no sentiment in football). But knowing his luck, would have come on with 10 to go, Boro get a goal and then desperate stuff. If we had got three then defo yes. Neville gave the ball away too much, Get to RB. Glad Pienaar bagged a goal after working hard to get the ball back.

Good result - let’s not forget that. 2-0 home win over reasonable opposition (albeit missing a couple of big players).

However...Neville and Jags gave the ball away alot and Hibbo just doesn’t look up to it these days.

Stick Neville at right back and keep Jags as a great benchwarming utility man.

Would love to see the Yak work a bit harder too.....

Highlights today were Piennar and Arteta and work rate of Faddy.

Job done this week. 2 victories and 2 clean sheets with Arteta given a full run out ahead of next week.

Next week will be much harder though - 2 tricky away games. Need to sharpen up in defence, Neville is a defender and not a midfielder, Jags the same. However, I think we’ll be smiling this time next week. Bring it on!

Is it me or did Hibbo pay well ?how did we pay 11mill for Yak? Did we play well or were boro that shit? Arteta is a god slap 25 mill price tag on him quick
Jim Starling
26   Posted 30/09/2007 at 20:58:04

I think Hibbo played better than recent weeks but not well as such...

Neville would have been far better at right back - poor in midfield as was Jags.

God there are some fucking moaners on this website!!! WE WON!!! Come on - I’d have take any win today in any fashion!! And we did!! Well in Moysie! Tightened up the back line, got a performance from pienaar and players coming back from injury slowly but surely! 5th in the league, still well in the UEFA cup tie, a decent draw in the carling cup and a potential quarter final!! It shouldn’t all be doom and gloom!! COYB!!!

A win is a win. We have played poorly for most of our games this season but we are still in 5th position in the league. I thought the ref was shite yesterday, did’nt give us anything. Great build up for the second so happy to take 3 points despite the performance being ok at best. Confidence is vital for this week with the tricky looking trip to Ukraine. But with Arteta back and them missing 2 defenders, my money is on a successful trip. Also, I too hoped AVM would get a few minutesunder his belt, but although he did’nt get on the pitch, he did look very happy just to be involved even though he was on the bench.
