Everton today.

Bit disappointed with your response today Michael. I see you picked ot a few for your sour tongue to attack. Namely:-

Neville was back to his horrible worst for the most part in midfield, numerous horrendous passes Whilst I agree some of Neville's passing was bad, I thought he linked up down the right quite well with Hibbert and Arteta. I thought he worked hard in midfield breaking up their attacks by closing the Boro midfield down. I thought he had an overall reasonable game.

Yakubu is just so godamn SLOW! Missed what looks like an easy header and had a coulpe of lame shots. And why was he always running back into our half? (Oh I know: TRACKING BACK!!!) Again there is a litle to agree with here but I think he will come on, as the team will when our midfild starts to fire on all cylinders (When is the problem though I hope and not if) Everyone everywhere agrees we lack creativity in midfield and the strikers can only perfom if they are recieving the right service.

Jagielka... was he actually involved at all? When he first came I thought we had a good one in him I thought Moyes had picked up another gem from the Championship. Sadly however the lad seems to be off the pace and a bit low in confidence. But I do see soemthing in him that I hope will develop. He chases down very well and I know he can put decent passes in becaus ehe was doing that at the start of the season. Maybe he will come on.

Baines... seemed to be too easily bypassed; poor overall I thought Baines was ok. Not as good as he has been because I thought he was out of position too much. Maybe he is getting forward too much. But I have to say that the left side looked a lot better with him linking up with Pienaar.

I thought the defence while a bit shaky in the first half got control of the game and Boro never looked as though they would score if they were still playing.

Oh, have to say Hibbert has recieved some criticism from me over the weeks, but I thought he did a good job today. I do however worry about Howard sometimes and his adhesion to the 6-yard box...

Overall a satisfying encounter and after the last few weeks we needed that. Now let's hope we go on some kind of run. Yes, Mikel does make a lot of difference to the team and so do Stubbs and Howard. They all play for Everton believe it or not. So Michael let's have a little positive from you.

Sorry, mate, I'm into 'realist' ? always have been. Forget this "positive"/"negative" shite, I just call it how I see it, and today it was poor. You consider that to be a satisying encounter? The only thing satisfying was the result, which should not even have been in question.

What ever so-called "positives" you want to take from it, I spent two hours of my precious life watching what was at the end of the day a poor advert for football, a very poor example of "the Premier League at it's best", and a quite depressing demonstration of exactly where David Moyes has taken Everton in his five years.

Yes, they do all play for Everton (you are a smart lad). If they didn't, I wouldn't be watching them. Now there's a thought...

I don’t think your a realist at all mate. In fact, yours and the expectations of the majority of people who freqeuent this site are hugely unrealistic.

Thank god though, the unrealistic opinions largely expressed (in particular about Moyes) on these pages do not represent the majority of Blues

Michael, what’s with the sarcasm? You are allowed to be as frustrated as the rest of us. And yes, you are of course allowed to vent that frustration. But honestly the sarcasm is beneath you, this site and the fans who use it as a whole. Your usual standard of response to pieces show you’re better than that.

In a way Mike is right though. For me it was good in patches but we defo need to improve.

Jagielka was terrible. The only way I can see him playing central midfield is with Gravesen alongside him. Neville is not someone who demands the ball whereas Tommy is.

Baines was average but he has been our best player for the past few games so Im not going to have a go at him.

Pienaar is a quality footballer. An Ajax player if im honest. Skillful, quickfooted, neat and tidy and clever on the ball. He also offers us a bit of pace on the break which is needed considering we tend to sit back after we score.

We at times where playing with 9 men as Jags and Nev where that awful but for me Arteta made up for them. The boy is quality and he was only half fit. If he could just produce against the top sides he would be even better.

Good three point without actually playing well. Michael is right there is room for improvement at both ends: players and manager. Hopefully we can get Gravesen back for thursday because judging by today we need him either fully fit or half fit.

I guess I know no other effective way of dealing with such a mind-boggling statement as "They all play for Everton believe it or not." ? isn?t that some form of sarcasm in itself? And what?s wrong with a bit of sarcasm now and again if it helps to make a point? Isn?t there some famous quote I should be citing just about now...???

First off, I?d question how you actually know what the expectations of the majority of people who freqeuent this site even are ? I run the frigging site and I have no idea ? never mind how you can so haughtily claim they are "unrealistic". We?re not even talking about "expectations" anyway ? we?re talking about post-match analysis of a game most have just watched, be it on TV or at the ground. That analysis includes an assessment of how the players played based on our individual assessment of what we know them to be capable of, and most people contributing intelligently to this site happen to be generally making the same comments about Neville, Jagielka, Arteta, Hibbert, Baines. What does that tell you? That their expectations are unrealistic?

And please, there's more than one "Mark" writing in ? use your surname. Thanks

Michael I?m not surprised at the response to your views, it seems these days a sizeable chunk of Evertonians are very easily pleased.

Today was turgid, how anybody can take heart from that performance baffles me. We?re now well into the sixth year of Moyes?s reign and I?ve completely given up hope of things getting better. This is it with Moyes, he?s a very lucky man indeed. Very lucky to have so many fans with low expectations and a Chairman who seems more preoccupied with lining his pocket than the club.

Somebody said a majority are happy, I don?t know where he sits but in my little patch of the main stand all are wholly disillusioned with Moyes and his tactics (or lack of). Same goes for my match going mates.

The most knowledgeable fans in the country? What a joke.

Keep on boys with your support ? we are heading for a miserable future of mediocrity. Mark my words we?re going nowhere with Moyes, he?s at his personal zenith.

I cannot believe that we finished the game with Pienaar up front, Jags, Carsley, Neville and Baines in midfield and three centre halves across the back four.

Having just watched the re-run on sky sports (nothing else on telly!) I was at least pleased to hear that Moyes was talking about sniffing a change and making it clear that he has noted how poor we have been recently. We have really missed some quality in the middle and hopefully Tommy will return and provide that on Thursday. How apt would it be that the man who did so much to get us fourth be the one to inspire us to get through.

Michael I think a lot of our fans can only recall the relegation scraps and happily accept anything that keeps us out of that. How ever I am not so easily pleased as I have said before I accept that under Bill there will never be enough cash to buy top quality so I am not expecting championships but would it make that much difference if Moyes had that sort of cash as its his record buys that are unimpressive Beattie and now Yakubu seem to be fish out of water, today although both Neville and Hibbo had better games neither are good enough and Nevilles shooting was awful the only way he would have scored was if the third bounce beat the goalie and for this the guy next to me applauds him why ? we have just created a shooting chance and he passes to the goalie,if Arteta had not played I dont think we would have won,and to be honest if we give the same space to better teams we will pay for it.

Got to agree with you Roy,with better finishing today from Boro,we could have easily lost the game. Also,We allowed them that much space, they actually looked a good side.At the end of the day,we got the 3pts,but boy, doesn’t it get harder to watch, week after week. And to make matters worse, coming back home to Wokingham,I get caught on the M40 in traffic for over an hour after an accident.

I’m with you Michael. They were bloody awful to watch today - much as I’ve been saying for some time. Unfortunately the blame for this sits squarely on the manager’s shoulders and despite what we think, Kenwright thinks the sun shines out of his arse so it looks like we’ll be putting up with this turgid shit for some time yet.

Lucky to win, even though the score flatters everton, and i think it should have ended ARTETA 2 BORO 0, and some credit to the vetran back he was great Mr Stubbs. Major worries when they play quality sides with a bit of zip in there step, they look so sluggish.Thank god Arteta is back he created both goals.

As a game it was mostly dull, sure, but there are a few silver linings (forgetting that we actually got 3 points, which was a must in itself):

- Arteta getting back on song....let’s not forget he was well below par for a couple of matches before the injury.

- Pienaar providing some more skill on the opposite flank....could he develop into another Mikky for us?

- Faddy looking confident and linking up well. Hopefully he’ll be pushing up the standards of the other below par strikers.

- A few examples of players getting the ball down and knocking some sharp passes to one another, including Neville and Baines.

Yeah, you can take the overall show as a problem, and individual performances of Jags and Yak as worrying, but there may also be some hope in there when you consider we have a stronger midfield to come back from injury. I’ll have a good piss & moan with the best of them when all I get from my season ticket is hoofball and 0 points, but overlooking the better bits would be too depressing.

Boring Boring Everton! I knew from when i seen the teamsheet that today was going to a poor game. Neville and Jagielka in midfield is just too much. They are both defenders. Moyes has been going on all week about how great Neville was at right back. Why play him in midfield then? Hibbert isn't doing so great at rightback and we look a lot better with Neville in there. The only possitive on a very frustrating day was the score. It's so boring!!!

N1. You are in danger of getting very boring again Michael. We (who actually go to the games) used to joke about your infamous "finishing fourth is crap if you have a negative goal difference" rant.
You serve the website well but you are incredibly repetitive and hard to listenn to. You are incredibly repetitive and hard to listen to. Did i mention how repetitive you can be?

I must admit that our overall perfomance was poor today but I think most of us half-expect it these days. The reason why we won was due to the inept finishing by Boro. You will be hard-pressed to see a poorer side at Goodison this season. Ofcoarse, Arteta was MOM by a country mile but special praise should go to McFadden for winning his fair share of possesion when the ball was hoofed forward. In the end, Moyes switching to 4-5-1 against a poor Boro side at Goodison said it all for me...this man has no belief in his players and it shows in the way they play.

You can’t seriously think that a few of the players namely Jagielka and Neville and Yakubu had poor games today? The tactics of DM to again play two identical players in midifeld be it any two from Carsley, Neville and Jagielka will always have the same effect; two players going for the same ball and if they win that ball limited distribution out of midfield merely as they are defensive and not attacking players. I’d also say there are distinct differences between optomism, pessimism and realism; the latter being used by many posters pointing out the deficiencies of the team today. Yes we won and yes many are happy with the three points and clean sheet but many are also not over enamoured by the knowledge that a better opponent would not have wasted the chances that Boro did and the final score would look very different.

Couldnt agree more michael.
Made up to get three points but the overall performance was again unfortunately what we have come to expect from moyes.
Baines and Jagielka were dissapointing and against a better team feel we would have been punished for our shortcomings

I am unable to understand why "The Art " is substituted to be relaced by "Cars" moving Nev to right midfield when VdM is warming the bench!!! Was this not the ideal opportunity to throw him on after his "rehab"? Leading 2-0 with the opposition waiting for the whistle.I´m confused. Tactics, balance? I dont get it!!!

We won and that’s the main aim I suppose, though to get to see good footy always seems like an added bonus when really it would be nice to win BECAUSE we play good football. Thank the good Lord for Arteta, he makes us tick there’s no doubt about it.
The crowd was very quiet and in the second half I could have had forty winks because hardly a sound came from anywhere. I sit in the Lower Gwladys and normally the place is buzzing but yesterday must have been the quietest ever. Perhaps we were being quiet so as not to disturb the player’s concentration? I jest, of course but does anyone have any idea why it was like a Wake yesterday? Has the main cheerleader gone on holiday or something?

I really cannot understand the critism that Phil Neville has been recieving after Sunday’s match. He had one of his better games. His passing was (for once) on the floor, accurate and linking well with Arteta, and as usual he showed total commitment in tracking back and some desire to get forward.

Jagielka had a shocker - constantly caught on the ball, and his passes were generally wayward. He ought to be played at right-back, where he is undoubtadly a better all-round player than (the admittedly impressive versus Middlesborough) Hibbert. Jagielka has quality, he will come good.

Arteta is a magician and we can all thank our lucky stars that the major Europeon clubs seem blind to his brilliance. He should give us the edge on thursday.

Likewise, Steven Pienaar. A really good little talent. Strong with both feet, skillful and quick. His link-up play with Arteta was encorouging. The move needs to be made permanant, before Dortmund realise what their missing.

Overall, We played well enough against Middlesborough. Defensively we still appear bafflingly shaky, though this first clean sheet and the return of Yobo should steady the ship somewhat. Up front, their is evidence that Moyes has realised that football is lot better if it is played on the floor - every now and again, we put together moved of real quality. This needs to be sustained for longer periods. We’re up to 5th - things aren’t looking too bad.

Now come on, you don’t often see me bashing our players or Moyes but Baines, Neville and Jags were poor yesterday. And I mean poor compared to their respective standards. (On the other hand, Hibbo was better than he usually is.)

I don’t want to go into far-fetched speculations nor join the silly debate about who has to be offloaded as soon as it’s possible but the fact remains that the trio played poor yesterday and pointing it out isn’t negativity.

"How much longer will we have to endure this dross?" and variations thereof is negativity. You can see the difference.

About Baines yesterday.

I think the dudes is just plain tired.

He’s been playing all the while and it was a good idea for him to rest for the Sheffield Wednesday game.

But he played anyways.

So yesterday it showed.

Although, if Yakubu had converted the header, he wouldn’t have been seen to be that bad.

All those who complain of wasting a couple of ’precious’ hours of their lives by going to the match really should stop going.

Myself, I love going, whether we win/lose/draw.

I agree with Michael and have much empathy with Tom Collie’s comments. It seems to me that to expect too much is a sin these days. Perhaps it’s a generational thing; when I was berating the crap served up yesterday my son (18)accused me of moaning for the sake of it and asked me why I always expect Everton to perform like Arsenal.Maybe everyone born before 1960 ought to just give up on the present day Everton and get the scrapbooks out!

The mood would suggest we did!

I was discussing this at the match yesterday, the mood is dour and let’s be honest we have not played well in any game this season, so I will remain optimistic in that we have played crap and still have 13 points on the table and still in the cup competitions (fingers crossed for Thursday)

Yesterday’s performance was good enough to beat the woeful opposition provided by Middlesbore. There were decent moments provided by the 3 players who comfortable with a football at their feet; Arteta, McFadden and Pienar. Some class football provided the 2nd goal. Why we can’t have more of this only Moyes can explain to us.

I would not have believed after leaving the opening fixture against Wigan dissatisfied with the fare on offer that, after 5 home matches, this would remain the best game at Goodison this season.

The club need to consider that this dross is hardly going to attract, and keep, new supporters disenfranchised by the move to Kirkby.

Michael you said "I’m a realist". You din’t say "I’m realistic about what I’ve just watched". You made a general statement, and having read article after article after article which you have commented on I can catagorically say that you are not ’a realist’ in your general views about Everton Football Club and David Moyes. Additionally, neither are most of the comments made by people who write in - I say that having read them.

I honestly thought that we were dire against Boro - not only the team but the fans. I know we need something to inspire us (and that’s not going to come from the play on hte pitch) but even before we’d kicked off the atmosphere was flat and negative.

I know this is a response the mostly the garbage we see on the pitch, which is very hard to get excited about - but it only seems that we make any noise if the ref makes a bad decision or where berating one of our own players.

I am not exempt from this I am even timing myself how long it is going to take before I sit down put my head in my hands and say "This is fucking shit!!" So far this season it has taken no longer than 45 minutes.

Just poor all round.

Footballs all about opinions, and I disagree totally with yours. Granted in the first half Boro should’ve been out of sight, but the fact is they weren’t. We then played some lovely football for the second goal and some great passing moves followed. Yakubu doesn’t look fit to me, but he’ll come good. Pienaars getting better too, and Jagielka will be a valuable player over the course of a season. Too many people on here just never going to be happy. We won 2 nil and you’re still moaning!!

Crikey, we are a team low on comfidence at the moment, but we ground out a win, so well done to Mr Moyes and co!

Nev should play at right back, and people who slagg of Jaggs, yes he had a shocker yesterday, but when he played in the middle the last few games he has played well. I think he (like the rest of the team) was lacking confidence and it showed. But we got the win like we did on Weds against Shefield and it all boosts the confidence.

Hopefully when we play Metalist we will get a result there and the confidence will grow more.

I think Pinnar is getting better by the game and that Baines has been very good so far. The Yak will get better, he has scored goals where-ever he has played and I think with Arteta, Pinnar and Grav when he come back will do well.

We just need AJ to score a couple and get his confidence back.

Moaning seems to be one thing we are fantastic at, time to get behined the team and judge people at the end of the season and not at the end of September!!!!

Negativity will never go away, you have to learn to tolerate it. It really looks like a rift between generations so what can you do about it? Make people younger or older?

Take it as a downside of having a rich and proud history. (Or a benefit, depending from which way you look at it.)
