Uefa Cup

Arteta is obviously a welcome return in view of the game against those Metalists from Ukraine this Thursday but the lack of goals and form from our strikers is a worry. EFC NEED to progress to the group stages as I am sure they have spent money on the likes of Yakubu on the assumption we will make money from the group stages. I wonder what sort of position we will be in if we fail to win away on Thursday?

Couple of points there, Matt. Firstly, Keith Wyness has said that the club have not counted the Uefa Cup in the budget projections which, if true, means that anything we get out of it will be gravy. Secondly, accepted wisdom appears to be that you have to progress beyond the group stages to really start making money out of this competition. The TV royalties just aren't anywhere close to the Champions League and it could even be a financial drain were we to qualify for the group stages but then not progress beyond there.

So, qualify on Thursday with a good win in Kharkov and then settle in for the long haul with our eye on the semis! :)

I seem to remember a table a few months ago with the earnings of English teams in Europe. The redshite made over 10mill in the CL and Spurs, who had a very good run in the UEFA made 1 mill !! I know it’s about the exposure, ie look at us Manny, or who ever, sign for us , we’re in Europe!! But in pure cash terms is it really worth it?? Especially if it affects your PL form, costs you, say, 3 places, you will sustain (you can’t ’make’ a loss as pedantic accountants keep telling me ) a loss of half a mill.

I think in terms of what it would mean for the club in terms of progression, experience for the players and attracting a higher class of player it would be well worth a good uefa cup run.

If we can get better service to the forwards then we can see if they are off form. Johnson did miss two pens as we know but what other chances did he get that night. If we can get the ball for the players to run on to and not have them with their backs to the goal things could be for the better. Having Arteta back will be a big improvement, also Gravesen will make a difference if fit. Overall, the quality of service to the forwards must improve.

A money spinner the UEFA Cup may not be, but you cant beat the free advertising, it puts Everton back on the map and everyone connected with football in Europe will know us, lets hope for the right reasons. There is the added benefits to the players and the experiences gained, and I am sure with a positive approach we will be far to good for Metalist.Beating Bayern but this time in the final would be nice

There were 38000 in Goodison for the Metalist Game. Thats straight cah the club would not have had were we not in Europe, There’s also extra sponsorship and prize money - its not all about TV money.

The club definitely makes money from being in Europe - No doubt.
