Cahill's position

Comments (3)

Ok. Let's here it. Where does Cahill fit into the mix here?. An immense talent given the right situation, I am struggling with where and how he he fits. I don't follow the Aussies. What is his primary position with the Aussie squad?

Perhaps it is because the direction of the squad seems to be in such flux. When we ran 4-5-1, there was no doubt of his role. But now that we are a 4-4-2 squad the midfield is in such disarray that DM can't seem to decide on any direction. The headache bleeds into his decisions at right and left back.

The lack of continuity makes me nervous. With Cahill hopefully getting back this month, do you suppose that DM will be able to settle his mind on a midfield? Quit tinkering so much? Will DM kick the P. Nev. at midfield habit? Please tell me I can at least believe in that.

The last time I watched Cahill playing with the Australian team was in the Asian Cup. He came on as a late substitute with great effect in games against Oman and Thailand. He scored in injury time against Oman by been at the right place at the right time, smashing in a rebound after the keeper parried a shot. Against Thailand, he was even more effective, playing in a free role just behind the front two. He drifted into the channels with great affect, providing 3 assists in a 15 minute period. For his first assist, he powered forward onto a long through ball by the left side line and found Viduka with a pin-point cross which he controlled on his chest and finished with aplomb. For the second, Tim this time drifted to the right side by the corner flag and delivered the perfect cross on Viduka’s head. For his thirst assist, Australia broke quickly and from the half-way line, our Timmy found Kewell with a through ball using the outside of his foot. To answer your question Scott, I think it’s best we give Cahill the freedom to roam as he has great engines, reads the game well and has a killer instinct in and around the box. In my opinion, he may be best suited to play at the top of a diamond-shaped midfield, with Gravesen the holding midfielder, Arteta on the right and Piennar on the left.

i think that midfield, pienaar, timmy, gravesen and arteta is a winner! stick neville back at right back and we are looking good - anyone from the yak, AJ, vaughan and mcFad up front - go the toffees forever!!!!

My answer is that Tim can play where he likes. He has to be better than the sheer dross we have seen from the likes of Neville,Osman and Jagielka so fart his season. The latter MUST be the worst midfielder EVER to play in the Royal Blue although to be fair to the lad he is a CENTRE HALF.
