The Mail Bag

Our best summer aquisition?

Having just trawled through a bunch of comments about last night, and specifically the comments about how terrible our new signings are:

Everyone came down like a ton of bricks on anyone slating Baines. Quite right, the lads class.
Jag this... Yak that... (mainly bad), no one mentions Pienaar!

I know he is a loan player and not a complete signing, but correct me if Im wrong but don't we have this lad till next season? For me he looks like our best summer 'signing' of the lot, and not just coz the rest are playing badly. He first played for Ajax, then bought as Rosicy's replacement (bad spelling, sorry), and to me he looks like a great workaholic that will fit into a Moyes team perfectly. Good at tracking back, commited talker for a winger and very proffesional.

Secondly, two games in a row now, he has read Mikel's intentions, popped into space in the box and created two class goals for us. His understanding with Arteta looks like it's forming well and he is a good creative forward thinking mid who can do his work both out wide and down the middle. Real class in my eyes, and a great find by Moyes.

I agree with you VIv, he seems to be one of few that understand where Mikel is coming from. The Middlesboro goal was pure instinct, this can neither be learnt or taught.

He is looking better game by game. I am still on the fence though. I certainly wouldn’t describe him as a ’workaholic’. It is rare that you see him competing for the ball in the air. He almost always backs off for the 2nd ball, even when favourite to make the ball first. I may be being picky as his diminutive stature doesn’t promote such work, but I feel he is chickening out slightly.
