Look at the Luck

Comments (11)

After Thursday?s game it was firstly suggested on TV that we were somewhat lucky to get away with a win, this was then picked up by the telext reports, and then copied by the tabloids the following morning. More astonishingly every other letter on this site seems to agree with this hasty assessment that Everton were lucky to go through.

Whilst I agree totally that the quality of football that we played on the night was second rate at best, I can?t for the life of me subscribe to the view that we were lucky. We had a perfectly good penalty disallowed at Goodison, if that had been allowed then I am sure Johnson would have confidently slotted home the second one, then the whole complexion of the second leg would have been changed.

Did anybody else notice that when Kharkov unluckily hit the post, the ball bounced at an unbelievable angle straight to the only other Kharkov player in the box bypassing the 4 Everton players who were also in the box. Would any of you class this as luck? I suppose we were lucky that Vaughan, Cahill and Johnson were all injured, and we were lucky that Neville was fully fit! (sorry Phil but you are supposed to pass to players in the same colour shirts)

We played poorly, Kharkov passed the ball better than us and looked to be a fairly decent side, but where we lucky to beat them? No, of course not.

Here’s a point that nobody has picked up on. I have read many critics saying Moyes’ teams can not come from behind to get a win, that once we give up a goal that’s it. Well we gave up the first goal on Thursday away from home in a European tie. We came back to pull even twice and then take the lead. This showed great character by the team, they didn’t quit, they stayed focused, didn’t play the best football but still got three good goals and Mcfadden could have had two with that point blank shot saved. We’re in the next round, have won 3 in a row scoring 8 goals in those games.

Thanks Malcom for your advice on watching the Cables, something that I already do at least a couple of times a season when work permits. But if you think my logic is flawed mr Spock perhaps you will take notice of Thomas Jefferson when he said "I’m a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work the more I have of it."

After golf legend Arnold Palmer one his first Major, he was accused of being lucky (think he chipped in a couple of times), he replied with "strange, the more I practice, the luckier I get"
Il take lucky wins all the way to the final. I for one am just glad to be in a european comp, you lot have such selective memories, we have been a poor premiership team since its begining, we are now talking of trying to crack in to the big 4, and through to the group stages of a european cup.
Also, if it does go wrong, dont jump on the managers back, remember how poor Man U were in the early nineties whilst they got used to euro footie, Moyes is learning, I for one am fully behind the team and Gaffer!

Guys .. stop moaning on attractive football.

Just sometime ago, there were moans of sacking Moyes, for shit football we’re playing and losing games

Now that we’ve won 3 on the trot, could you guys give it some rest.

I don’t care if we play worse football then Barnet, so long as we’re winning.

So let’s enjoy the victories...

COYB !!!!!!!!!! 2-0 to us @ St James tomorrow.

Luck or otherwise has nothing to do with it. The reality is that we played extremely poorly on Thursday, and if Metalist had a decent finisher we would have lost. If we play anything like that against better European opposition than Metalist, we will lose. I hope like all of us that Moyes now learns. But he certainly learnt nothing between the two ties with Metalist.

Lucky my arse. We scored more goals than them. Hence we deserved to win.

They were fucking well lucky at Goodison - remember AJ’s pen etc. When its over 2 legs everyone is quick to forget the 1st. Also, Liverpool and Utd are lucky are lucky for everything they’ve won in the last 10 years so there you go

Lucky like Man U scoring twice in extra time to win the Champions league? Lucky like Liverpool beating AC after being 3-0 down at half time? Over the two legs we scored more goals than Metalist, had more shots on goal, had more genuine chances, had a penatly disallowed, had more players out... As for this continuous shite about playing attractive football (or not as the case may be) ask yourselves how many teams in the league actually do, apart from Arsenal and Man U (most of the time)? Chelsea? Liverpoo? Villa? Blackburn? I think fucking not. Get a grip.

We weren’t lucky - we were very lucky! Regardless of what happened at Goodison in the first leg, when we were very unlucky (retaken penalty and all) , the fact remains that Metalist should have been at least 3 up at half-time and been well out of sight - and if it hadn’t been for Howard they would have been (talk about a defence going awol!). Too many players played poorly on the night, in fact the team as a whole looked clueless and out of their depth (until about the last 20 minutes or so).

OK, some people will say it’s the result that counts, we scored more goals than them so deserved to win, but if we continue to play like that in the group stage against better opposition, then the next four games are all we’ll play in this year’s competition.

However, if we continue to play like that and keep winning, then luck really will be on our side and Phil Neville will no doubt be lifting the trophy come May (time to take my medication!!).
