3 Games On The Trot
Comments (26)
Some interesting views today from many fans on how, despite being beaten 3-2 at the barcodes yesterday, things were not too bad as we had won 3 on the trot. Well, lets put that in some perspective:
-
Sheffield Wednesday: very poor game. Although they never really looked like scoring and were unable to keep us under pressure, we also struggled badly. Long ball game was in full evidence. Also, they were beaten easily at the weekend by another poor Championship team.
-
Middlesborough: some awful football again and we should have been 3-1 down at half time to a similarly awful team.
-
Metalist Kharkiv: to say we rode our luck is severely understating how awful we were. At half time we had been humiliated. Great result at the end but, like the first leg at home, was our fitness that was the difference.
Judge any manager by his results. We are mid-table currently despite spending more this summer than ever before. The quality of the football (and no, not the results) is no better than in the dark days of Walter. Can it be that difficult for a professional footballer to hold and pass the ball rather than a long punt forwards? Is this due to the players, manager or coaches?

Neither. We’re only 3 points behind 5th or 6th spot and its far too early in thr season for league positions to mean anything.
We were beatne by the better team on Sunday, and looked tired at times due to Thursday night/all the travelling etc no doubt. If you look at our injury list, you’ll notice that due to those out injured, our current squad is probably smaller than it was before we bought in the summer.
No offence mate, but you have to try looking a bit deeper than simply our current position, then pointing the finger at people. We’re in the UEFA cup proper, through to the next round of the Carling Cup and in a decent position in the league on points, not position.

John, good points - our defence has basically been a sieve for the last three games. Never seen anything like it under Moyes. Boro and Metalist should both have scored three against us in the first halves of their games. I suppose at least we can be sure that Moyes is now hard at work in trying to re-impose our defensive solidity.

We are not the first team to be involved in a Euro campaign and struggling to maintain league form.
Weren’t we 5th last week? Give the guys a break. Its going to take time to adjust to the extra demands of Euro football.
We lost away to Newcastle. Big deal. They are a good side and we wont be the last team to lose there this season.
Personally I’ll take finishing mid-table if we get a decent (Semi at least) run in the UEFA Cup.

Agree with much of what Allan said but ’beaten by the better side?!?!’ nonsense! From what Paul Merson said (who was watching the match on Sky) and from what I have gathered from independent reviews of the match, Newcastle were very fortunate to have beaten our boys. Newcastle outplayed us in the first 45 ok, but you’d expect the majority of the first half to belong to the home side in 90% of premiership games. Second half was a different story, we controlled the game and Emre’s goal was a classic case of a blind squirrel finding a nut. Adding insult to injury Michael Owen, who makes Karen Carpenter look physically sturdy, managed to score purley because we had gone all out for the deserved equaliser. In short, the barcodes victory was little more than a fluke. One more thing, I was a little disapointed with the ’extra touch of class’ remark made in the match review article on this site. Suggesting Newcastle have more class than Everton would make for a good laugh if the result had gone the correct way yesterday.
John, your article is a little on the pessimistic side (to say the least), whether or not the dark days are returning to Goodison will be judged in the coming winter, however winning our next game against the reds will go along way to determining what direction our season is going to take.

John your right mate.5 years and a bit more since W Smith left and the football is as bad as ever. Its even worse if the truth be known.David Moyes has a very limited ability in the tactical department but some of our lot wont have it.Its awfull to watch and must be soul destroying to play yet we persist with it.Your also right about the 3 wins on the trot.We were embarrasing in every one of those games and I fear it will get even worse in the Eufa cup proper against better sides than Kharkiv.I dont see the point in us competing in Europe if we are going to play like the Red Lion on a Sunday morning.Cluess manager is to blame.

yes what is up with the fact we CANT hold onto the ball and are incapable of PASSING to a team mate instead of punting down the field like they do at the start of Rugby games!! thats right lads all stand in a line ill hoof it down field and yuo all charge after it, terrible way to play football just awful to watch and IMHO is relagation type football. who to blame, well, it has to be what is being asked of the players on the training ground or perhaps there is no real training at all, the players just show up on match day and make it up as they go, same for the manager? :(

Right, I think Moyes’ is the man for the job. I’m 100% behind him all the way. I simply cannot believe how fickle we are all becoming. Come on now, the bigger picture. If success is such an easy thing to achieve, why are there only 4 clubs who ever have any? Imagine if Man U would of sacked Ferguson when they were struggling early on. It is and will continue to take time. They’ll be more ups and plenty of downs along the way, but I’m convinced that we are heading in the right direction down a very long and bumpy road!

Well said John. My thoughts entirely. Unfortunately due to the way we play we are going to fall behind the other teams in ’our divison’ namely Man City, Villa, Newcastle and Blackburn. Why because they have better players? - no way! Better manager that can get his players creating chances and keeping possession? - definately.
I know a lot of people will disagree because results at the moment are not too bad but are football is so hit and miss, we rely too heavily on the opposition playing badly then we do on ripping teams apart with good football.
We are a modern day Wimbledon - but then Moyes is a modern day Harry Bassett so its not surprising.

Were Middlesborough players shaking hands after the recent win out of sympathy for taking Yakubu of their hands. Does anyone recall the friendly at Crystal palace recently and were their players taking on a benevolent mood for the same reason with Johnson. Its looking like the School of Science is in detention. And a perpetual one at that. With all seriousness, i cant see the point of getting rid of yakubu and johnson anytime soon. We have paid a lot of money and i for one intent to see that i (the club) gets its moneys worth. Yakubu just needs a few goals under his belt (or a rocket up his ass) and as for Johnson, well the same goes for him as well.

I reckon at my age I have 15 years left of watching Everton. Am I going to spend all these years watching this aimless, long ball shite? Can anyone give me any hope at all?

I love it when Tony Marsh spouts the same crap week afterweek...Tony, can I ask you a question? How many coaches badges do you have? Do you know anyting about football tactics at all? Can you suggest something before slagging the manager and the team...Let’s see last week, it was our right and left back weren’t going forward enough, but there was Banies on the endline to set up the tying goal. And our passing was very good for stretches, and we didnt really play a lot of hoof ball yesterday at all. Victor did well, and got the crap pounded out of him by Faye on every towering ball. Faye committed probably 7 fouls in the match, and never got carded, and Hibbs wins the ball, and gets carded.
I thought Baines going to ground caused the first goal for Newcastle, and we will get punished for being a bit inexperienced there, but I thought f Victor had gotten his shot clear through in the later stages of the game we probably would be looking at 2-1 to us instead of 3-2 to them. But, according to Tony Marsh, it’s Moyes fault that Emre ht a beauty from 25 yards, because Moyes had his players unprepared tactiically to stop a perfect shot into the lower corner of the goal....Cmon Tony stop moanin’ and explain what you would do instead of just slagging the man.

So according to Tony Marsh, we have a "clueless manager". I would hate to be a supporter of Spurs, Fulham, Bolton, Derby, Boro, Wigan, and Brum right now. Then we have Chelski, Barcodes, and the Shite who, after spending many more millions than us, are floundering also. The shite are 4th, 3 points ahead of us. Chelski 2 ponits in front of us.I for one would like to be only 2 points adrift of Chelski come the end of the season. The point is, there are 29 more games to be played in the prem, and, I hope a bunch more in ALL cup competitions. If we are out of the top six at the end of the holidays I will be surprised. It will take some time for everyone to gel, but gel I am sure they will.

Evelyn there’s no way you watch AJ play because if you did you wouldn’t be saying that. The impact he has on us whether scoring or not is huge. Such an important player for us.

Lescott
Lescott has proved himself to the world he is good enough to play in the Premiership.
I now believe it is time for him to leave Everton a small club to somone more presitgious for example Liverpool. However i believe he is bringing Evertons name down because of his stunning looks? All you true Evertonians will agree. Reply as soon as cus am off soon kidd xxxx P.S I also believe that Aj carsley and gravesen should be made to wear tupays as the sun beaming off there heads often obstricts my view to the pitch.

Here we go again with the other team has a better manager merry-go-round....Blackburn...who are they going to get in the next round of the Uefa Cup, bet they can’t wait for the dr....or they’re out? Hughes must be a genius then, savng his team for the difficulties ahead in the Prem. Matin O’Neill...I like him a lot, but he has a ton of money from an American so he can afford to make mistakes...and is he going to be looking at the draw tomorrow...oh, no..he’s not in Europe either...and Newcastle...I think I posted this earlier...Big Sam was LAST year’s flavor of the month, and Newcastle hasn’t won anything in more than 50 years..or did someone mention MCFC...didn’t we run Sven out when he managed to completely get team selection wrong in the WC? And you folks want him here?
Let’s see we played...4 games in 11 days...won 3 of them...and were okay in the 4th and maybe should have gotten a point. But let’s fire the manager and sack the Chairman because we know better than anyone how to run a football club...It’s like all of those MU supporters who couldn’t stand the thought of the Amercans buying their club a couple of years ago...how did that work out? Didn’t MU hoist a trophy last year? Or was that a mirage?
I love those posters who want to relive the glory years of 22 years ago...that’s ridiculous. The game has moved on, the style, the pace, the players, the coaching, the fitness are all very different now. You can’t compare eras or coaching styles. Do you think Sir Alex still coaches the way he did when he first started?
Cmon, get real. This isn’t a reality show on television. This is real life, and the sooner you understand it the better off you can be.
If you want to argue tactics. Suggest something. If you want to argue Moyes’ tactics. Suggest something that WORKS with the PLAYERS we have, not some computer generated fantasy that you think might work.

I agree with Jeffery!
Lescott is not what you would call eye candy. and i think the tupay idea is smashing. as it would make them look dashing my view has also been obstructed by there shiny heads. get a tupay lads. anyone else think rooney is a true blue. i know he did some bad stuff to everton. sold his story to the sun. but he left everton a small club to go to a bigger more prestigious club manchester united. once a blue always a blue he will always be a blue in eyes. Can all you Moyes ador’ees just please consider the facts that you see with your own eyes & be honest. While its true the results will probably continue to keep us plodding along in a safe position. The performance & football are horribly pathetic, showing little or no signs of improving. Surely after "five years" and a lot of cash spent (or wasted) we are entitled to at least some sign of consistent improvement.

Keep Living the Dream AL. Lets get excited about beating a bottom three side in the Championship 3 nil.
The poster’s on here are not paid a million quid a year to sort out the tactics and the style of the play. The dour little Scotsman is paid to do that, but all he can do is shout non productive comments from the touchline and clap his hands. You see people like that at kids football every Sunday morning - you should not see them on a premiership touch line.
I’m different to you Al, I dont want to see Everton score the majority of their goals from set pieces - i want to see us score from open play more than once every 4 premiership games. Until that happens then the manager and the coaches are not doing their job there paid for.

Okay....let’s back it up...there Mike. Two goals in Newcastle...open play, two of the three in Boro, open play, two of the three in the Ukraine open play....If you are going to make blanket statements...at least be right with the facts, okay? I don’t mind you challenging me, but it would be nice if you were right.

can anyone tell me is it true about this takeover??
Mike Whittaker
Posted 09/10/2007 at 09:27:52
I thought we only scored two agianst Middlesborough Al? Can you describe the third goal for me. The third goal was classic hoofball in the Ukraine. A 90 yard hoof from Yobo that their defender flapped at. At Newcastle, I thought our second goal was thrown in by Given from Arteta’s free kick?
So I agree Al the the last three games the ratio has been about 50:50 which is a miracle under Moyes. But if we cast our mind back over longer than this amazing 3 wins on the trot sequence, to say his time in control, I think you find 70% of our goals have come from set pieces rather than opening up a defence with a bit of skill and imagination.

You may have a point there Mike, considering our leading goalscorer is a defender.
