Howard Wins!

Comments (6)

Recently the US Soccer Association named Landon Donovan US Player of the Year. He beat out Tim Howard, our great Toffee keeper. Across America most people who know the game were bemused as Donovan most likely won based solely on past fame. So last night Fox Soccer Channel's two Brit hosts ran a poll to select Player of the Year.

Much to my delight, Tim Howard won in a landslide, with kind words going towards what he has done for Everton and his national side. Considering that Tim suffers from Tourette's Syndrome, it is amazing that he is a top class world keeper, so kudos to the Everton keeper! And boos to the US Soccer Association for trying to hang on to the past achievements of a once potential great US striker.

We few americans who actually care about soccer/football are actually quite proud of Tim. Landon is a good player, but won that honor based on his celebrity status, not performance on the field. Aside from Beckham, Donovan is probably the only soccer player an average american would recognize...
I love Tim and I love Everton. If any other American deserved it more than Tim it would be Clint Dempsey (currently with Fulham). Starting with the World cup, he has come from nowhere to be one of US soccer’s best players... No matter what, things are starting to look up for US soccer.

So you guys watch/listen to World Soccer Daily and Fox Football Fone In. Quality radio show, listen every day at work. The TV show is okay. I especially love their disdain for Landon Donovan, or Landycakes as they call him. A player with no heart who keeps getting recognition from the American press, showing they know absolutely nothing about football. Howard or Dempsey should have won the award, but it’s a stupid award that means absolutely nothing. Howard is playing for one of the top sides in England, playing in Europe, while Donovan was pathetic when he attempted to play in Europe, ran back the States, and plays for one of the worst teams in the terrible MLS. Guys, if you think we play poor football, try to watch just 10 minutes of an MLS game. I have tried, just to get my fix during these International breaks, but I just can’t stand to watch it. By the way, the International break is even worse for us over in America since the England games are never shown live on TV, but instead you have to order it on pay per view for about 50 dollars. Even the friendlies are only shown on pay per view!!!!

>I especially love their disdain for Landon
>Donovan
Yes, worth a chuckle. I think for me, and many lovers of the game, we don’t hate Donovan, we hate the idea that our country could have had a world reknown striker (so we aren’t JUST known for our GKs) and feel disappointed in Donovan’s lack of ambition to return to Europe. We all want to see an American score goals overseas, thus the excitement of Dempsey.

> try to watch just 10 minutes of an MLS >game.
There is no doubt that some play is really bad. But guys, watch 10 minutes of an Everton game (a top England side). Not pretty! Watch some highlights of MLS and you’ll see some crackers (for goals.). About on par with Championship League of England, minus the American football field marking (yikes!). The crowds seem to be much more vocal these days too.

>since the England games are never
>shown live on TV,
You’ve got it bad! Why would you want to see England play!?!? ha ha
Maybe more fun to watch the Scots and McSuperFadden play!

Does any Yank know the Everton affiliated youth team in CT? I heard there was.

Cheers

Some more clean sheets please, before we start bowing at his feet. Although I’m sure the consistently shit Tony Hibbert has something to do with that

I don’t give a damn about the American team or anything American. I just wish football was bigger here and that they would stop taking advantage of all the English people who live in the States who want to watch our National Team but have to live and work so far away. It’s hard enough getting up at 4 AM to watch Everton play United or Liverpool, I’ll be damned if I’m going to pay 50 dollars to watch England play though. The pubs usually order it though, just have to pay a cover charge to get in.
