Gary Speed

Comments (27)

Gary Speed has been relieved of his duties at Bolton due to an ongoing disagreement with Sammy Lee.

Knowing that David Moyes tried to sign Gary Speed (unfortunately it was too late and the player had agreed terms with Bolton by the time) do you think it's likely he will offer him a coaching position?

i don’t think a lot of fans have forgiven him to be honest
although i could be wrong
i think he’s a model pro and a good influence to have around
i’d be quite happy if he came on board

So what actually happened between EFC and Speed? He has been tight lipped on the subject ever since he left us.

He had a fall out with a certain pisshead at Everton and has basically ended up with the shitty end of the stick.

We could certainly do with him as a midfield influence if Graveson is only going to play occasionally. If his contract has been cancelled,he’s a free agent and can be signed ’outside the window’.

I heard Kendall threw up on the coach to West ham pissed & speed had it out with the staff, never played for us again. Could be rumour but we all know he hated Kendall & vice versa . That was probably the straw that broke the camels back

THe reason he left Everton was because Adrian Heath tried to slot him in the shower while Howard Kendall held him down DISGUSTING

Speed is scum, "its a dream move for me, I’m a boyhood evertonian, I want to end my career here"

3 years later "Newcastle are a bigger club, I want to go and win things"

In the same category as Rooney, Greedy lying twat

All the rumours seem to point to booze anyway. As far as i’m aware (and it is on very good authority), Kendall was blitzed out of his head at a training session, Speed wasn’t too impressed and Kendall apparently said, "you’re the captain, you take training then". I don’t dislike Speed and you can’t blame him really if these rumours are true, which they appear to be. He’s a professional hence why he’s still in damn good shape!

Chris,to call speed scum is a little over the top.At the end of the day we don’t know the real truth about the goings on when he was here..And give him his due,he never once slagged us when he left.

Speed is nice bloke. When Everton was in Thailand (together with Bolton and Man City) he readily posed for pics and signed autographs with Everton fans and always seemed sincere doing it. Even when given a ribbing or two he just smiled it off
He did well when he was at Everton and it was pretty disapointing to see him leave but like most people said he never slagged us of at any time, He’s a true pro and i wouldn’t mind seeing him back and be a backup for the midfield. He could still do a job there i think

reason i hate speed and always will is simply he was our best player that season and club captain yet refused to play against west ham to get his move, thats just not on and he abandoned us in our hour of need. Yes, there were some circumstances at the club that were unacceptable but as an evertonian and club captain, to refuse to play for your club is unacceptable and unforgiveable

Read a tale of a lad walking through some north wales coastal town and bumped into Speed with his 2 kids, bioth wearing Everton kits, this within the last couple of years. Not sure about the rumours above, I heard it was him forced out because the club needed the cash.
HMMMM, now where have I heard that story before?

Yeah, let’s not forget the reality about Speed. The "shithouse" chants might have stopped (on our terms, not his) but that doesn’t mean that we haven’t forgotten that, however justified his gripes (probably) were, he was our captain and he refused to get on the bus to West Ham whilst we were in the middle of a desperate run of form. I made it down to West Ham that day, Gary Speed, our "boyhood Blue" captain didn’t.
Never forget about Speed. He ranks right down there with Rooney and Barmby.

Listen boys.
I have posted on here before why Speed left us and here it is again.
Kendall was pissed all the time and Speed and Waggy where taking the training sessions, also he was to pissed to give the team talks and sort out the tactics.
When Speedy complained he was moved on to the geordies.
He kept his mouth shut because he is a blue and so are his kids and most of his family.
He will put it straight in his auto biography.
Believe me. He is no scumbag and should never be put in the same bracket as Rooney and Barmby.

With regards to Speed’s departure, the rumour doing the rounds years ago was that his wife had an affair with Adrian Heath, hence why he left.

Farfetched but could be true.

Who knows. Id welcome him back

I heard that HK was on the bottle to much,Waggy +Speed tried to have chat with him which became slightly heated and Speed sadly left.I would welcome him back.

Despite the rush to judgement of our fans Speed is still a Evertonian, never bad mouths the club so how can he be put in the same bracket as Rooney IF any one falls out with their boss for any of the scandalous rumours that are rife then good luck to the guy.

i’d have him back. He’s a model pro and after he left there was none of that badge kissing Rooney crap was there. If the rumours then were true then you could hardly blame him, if he complained and the Club reacted by shipping him out. I remember we sold Andy Hinchcliffe that week as well so clearly we were either cashing in our assets or Kendall was having trouble convincing senior players he was up to the job.

In view of how that season ended and some of the rubbish players ( Tony Thomas, Mitch Ward, Carl Tiler, John Spencer, John O’Kane to name 5, plus he lined up Alec Clelland too! ) Howie brought in you would have to say the likes of Speed may have had a point!!! I love HK for all the wonderful times he gave us in the eighties, but 10 years later he had not moved with the times I’m sad to say.

gary speed left because of wot, a disagreement with some one, who i dont know and dont really care, but you have to accept in this world of gossip and self importance, what did gary speed do wrong. he had an issue, he made his point and felt he had lost
but he kept it to him self and still has kept it quiet.
so give this MAN a little respect even if he does just play for notlob
an honest man

Dave Lynch, and a few others, you are right. Almost all of the heresay that’s worth listening to points to the same story. Having heard the guy on tv the other week too, he still loves the club. I have no ill feeling towards him and don’t entertain the thought of booing him.

I too have always liked Gary Speed and have admired him for never slagging off the Club or giving any dubious reason, for his sudden departure from the Club. I agree that it was his duty, as Captain, to board the ’bus for West Ham but I think there is a lot more to it that we may never know.

He obviously loves our Club still - as Mark Pendleton said - I too felt that having seen him on TV the other week, his love for Everton still shone.

I think a lot of it was down to his relationship or his dislike of Kendall’s boozing but what’s the story between him and Sammy Lee? Does anyone know? It isn’t that he doesn’t get along with all of his Managers, he seemed to have a very good relationship going with Whinger Alladyce and maybe that’s where he will end up, although I agree I would like to see him back at Everton in some sort of job.

Listen he didn’t get on with Kendall, and I understand that Kendall didn’t do much to smooth tensions and may have even gone out of his way to bait him, but some theories on here are disgusting and the perpertrators should be ashamed. Both HK and AH were part and cause of our greatest team and deserve our respect.

The idea that HK was too pissed to take training and team talks is a joke. However, desperate HK’s last season with us was, it was clear he was trying to change the style of play. This culminated and was never matched against Chelsea at home.

He seemed pretty lucid when he berated the team at the end of the Coventry game and he was equally measured, and almost dismissive of the result a few days later after the derby - alluding to the fact that’s it not good enough to only play like that against LFC - when I’d guess every other blue was in fact pissed.

As for Gary Speed the money Newcastle were offering plus the chance to get away from HK must have looked ideal. To his credit he never banged on about being a blue and then stiched us up a la Stubbs and Rooney.

And that hold’s regarding his silence about it as Everton inserted a confidentiality clause into his payoff (I’m not sure if they had them as standard) something that GS mentioned at his departure.

Ravo how blind are you mate ?
The kendall rumours are all true I have seen enough first hand to know what he has become, basically the man who gave us our greatest days is now an absolute
embarrassment , try going to some of these
dinners mate , I stopped a good while back , it makes you cringe when he gets up repeating himself, its just sad that even our greatest managers days are tarnished
by what he has become , Read stuart mcCalls book too , he came in at half time grabbed a cup swallowed it only to realise
it was booze and for a club of our size and heritage that is a fucking disgrace, Suppose it just sums us up really we cannot even have a legend manager to grow old gracefully like legend
managers do.

Paul I understand where you’re coming from but going on how he was up to the end of his third spell I also know he was capable of getting himself in shape.

He and EFC used to spend a lot of time at the gym at the Logwood Mill (I think it was the clubs official gym) and after disappearing for a while, following his 2nd spell, he was seen emerging from a car looking smart, tanned and the picture of health.

Unfortunately it seems that around that time Howard was capable of being at extremes and that these periods could be quite short, especially in relation to a full season.

Some might not accept this or claim that he was merely competent at making an attempt to mask alcoholic tendencies (a ’competence’ that may have now deserted him), however the point I was trying to make, and looking back I should have been a bit more specific, was that comments making reference to HK and AH molesting Gary Speed in the showers, even as a joke, are completely out of order and show a lack of class and respect for two, in their time, Everton legends.

I haven’t seen HK at any dinners but to be honest, and I know that he hasn’t admitted he has a problem, I would hope that if he ever does that the club would lend any support it could and not leave him to rot like Liverpool FC did with Paisley when he was diagnosed and treated for alziemers.
