Lescott, James... or Cole's bad luck?
Comments (49)
Whilst watching the second half of the England game yesterday, I was very proud to see Joleon Lescott make his debut for England. I hope he continues to do well for Everton and force his way into the national team.
What did worry me was the Ashley Cole injury and I still can not work out what happened. On the one hand, I can see that Joleon SHOULD have cleared the ball before it bounced; however, in the replays, Joleon can clearly be seen to signal to David James ? whether that was for him to stay or what, I don't know. In that same moment, David James SHOULD have come for the ball and I wonder if Lescott was used to Howard coming out to get those balls?
Then there is Ashley Cole himself. Earlier in the game Cole hurt his ankle yet continued. Then in this challenge he landed awkwardly after rushing in.
Here's the question: Was the injury caused by Lescott not going for the ball, James not coming out, or simply down to a weakness in Cole's ankle? May be it was all three?

I have no time for people who support another country against their own.
9 Posted 14/10/2007 at 20:12:07
Of course I support wales.

In wales and Scotland its totally different. Everyone is proud of their country and the dream is to play for your country one day. As you saw tonight with the argentina rugby players crying when their anthem is playing.
If I were anything different my family would be ashamed, and thats the way it should be.

Neville will start they reckon.
As you mentioned the rugby Gavin Harris, it put our national football team to shame last night the way our rugby team sang the national anthem and the sportsmanship they showed and the way they respected the referee.
As for Lescott starting against Russia, I hope he does, scores the winner from a corner and puts us in Euro 2008, so we can proudly wave our flags of St George and show we are patriotic.

You are an utter disgrace supporting Germany and the Brazil over your country of birth. While we all enjoyed the way Holland played total football in 1974 and Brazil played their brand of the beautiful game in 1970 to support a country, that YOUR country has fought two distructive wars (in recent living memory) against is nothing short of treason and remember Mr Ramejkis that Treason is still a capital offence in this country

Barmby and that fat kid at man u both had their heads turned while playing for England.
The last thing we want is Gary bloody Neville having a word in Joleon’s ear and encouraging him to join the dark side.
International football’s for trumpet players and ra ra southern toffs.
Just pray neither of them get injured before Saturday.

Supporting your country in Football does not mean you are a stereotype of a football hooligan. Supporting your country does not mean you are a rabid flag waving, royalty loving, gun toting patriot either. As it happens I am none of the above and along with many supporters of the England football team support them simply because we like football we are English and the team is the football representative of the English people.
Its beyond me that you an Englishman
(I presume) could support a football representative of the German people

We all find some sections of our national team and support worthy of revulsion, however I do not feel that loyalty to the national team be abandoned because some section of it does not suit you, that is essentially throwing the baby out with the bathwater. I have lived in Germany and seen many acts of loutish behaviour from German football fans and the German population. I currently live in New Zealand and the bitterness shown towards the loosing national rugby team by a normally tolerant and genial population leaves one with a sense of deja vu. It is your choice who you support, enough has been said on this matter but could you have chosen anyone else but the Germans?

Common Mauritius ...!!
COYB lets talk about the derby match..
Who will play, who wont play, who should play and who should not...

Personally, i would rather watch Mexico or Scotland play football before watching England.
Anyhoo - How many of the 85 championship winning side was Guarenteed a starting role for England?
For those who remember the QPR match (last game of the season) Bobby Robson was booed by a large selection of the crowd when he stepped on to the pitch to hand the trophy over.
What have the English national side ever done for us?
Sweet FA

I’d prefer to watch Scotland over England. I have I crossed the "fine line"?

As a ex-squaddie it used to make me physically sick to see the amount of idiots running round dressed in green on Paddys day...while the boms were going off in birmingham ,warrington, manchester and london.....I myself am noy a great Royalist, in fact I think the royal family are a bunch of parasites..but I do live in a country that gives me free hospital care,an education, and the right to my freedom of speech..this is what makes me support my countries sporting teams..because I was born an Englishman...I was also born an Evertonian...and no matter how much I may admire Arsenals passing..or Liverpools luck...I cannot and will not support anybody else.

I am pleased to hear England won the World Conker Championships yesterday this proves that all those hours in the playground bashing your mates conkers paid off.
I support all England or GB teams, tennis players, golfers (except for Faldo) darts, snooker whatever.
This whole discussion started out who injured Cole, he injured himself and I think it was the hesitancy of Robinson that caused it, I think Lescott thought Robinson would be off his line like Tim Howard.
Anyway Cole has the consolation of picking up 75k a week whether he plays or not so dont give him too much sympathy.

My patience with England ran out when they overlooked player after player, nothing new i understand as one only has to check the history books to see examples of blues who go down south when past it only to be rewarded with their first caps.
However, I think that era was ended by Keegan and reinforced by Eriksson. McLaren does seem to give us a fair crack at the team.
However, for me, England will always be a distant 2nd to Everton and if Ireland go back to the 80s and have more scousers in the team than England then I’ll support them. I’m an Evertonian first, a scouser second and an Englishman third.

What was up with Faldo? I learned how to play golf from watching him. I broke 90 last week! Thanks Nick.
45 Posted 15/10/2007 at 15:44:04
If you would of learned how to play golf from watching Seve like me you would know how to hit it out of the trees, the heavy rough, someones back garden and break 85 haha
46 Posted 15/10/2007 at 15:38:43
As somebody else has already said, it is up to you who you support. But some of us do find it a bit queer to say the least when an Englishman does not support England. I don’t particularly like the way England is cliquey and biased towards southern players but insofar as International football is concerned they are my team. There is a lot I don’t like about Everton, on and off the pitch, but I haven’t decided to support the redshite because of it!
And why Germany? What have Germany ever done to deserve your admiration? Played off the pitch by Holland in ’74 and won the thing on penalties. Their assault on the brilliant French side of ’78 was a disgrace when they found themselves in danger of a thrashing and reverted to causing bodily harm. They taught the football world how to ’dive’ in the eighties and won countless games on the back of Klinsman being the best exponent of the tactic. In all competitions since they have been ruthlessly efficient and utterly boring and won the Euro only after beating a superior and desparately unlucky England side when football came home!
Time to change your allegiance I think!
47 Posted 15/10/2007 at 16:00:21
I don’t think the editorial team would allow a golfing thread would they!?

John Collins
Don Hutchinson
Davie Weir
Was everyone supporting England that night?

1 Posted 14/10/2007 at 19:24:20
The injury was caused by Paul Robinson not coming out.
I thought Lescott was nervy and didnt settle down until he was moved to left back.
